Nike and Jezebel-Feminists in Sports

“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown: but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it unto subjection: lest by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” – (I Cor.9:24-27).

Yesterday I bought a new pair of Nike basketball shoes for walking and then I brought my wife to the store to buy a pair of Nike’s. I have been doing a series of sermons on Jezebel – feminists in these end days and God touched my heart with the world ‘Nike’ and then the rest of this sermon.

Nike Corp. founded in 1972 in Beaverton, OR. is the number one shoemaker in the world selling $16 billion worth of athletic shoes in a year in 160 countries. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory and a feminine Greek name. The ‘swoosh’ trademark represents the wing of this goddess. Feminists today are trying to replace the male God of the Bible with a female mother God – a goddess – in order to replace male leadership taught to us in God’s Word of truth.

So far I have preached about the Jezebel-feminists in the workforce and politics and in the church and I intend to preach soon on them in the military. But God has now brought forcefully to me to preach on one area that has been overlooked – the Jezebel-feminists and women in sports. I’m using the word ‘Nike’ to represent the pagan, unscriptural participation of women in sports. And the feminists who have pushed it.

My scriptural text is (I Cor.9:24-27) which was written by Paul to the Christian church in Corinth, Greece and it fits perfectly my sermon here as Nike is a Greek goddess. We Christians are not to follow Greek gods but the Hebrew God of the Bible and His Son who was miraculously born as a Jew. Most Christian home school advocates today claim that the Hebrew model for education, since it’s based on the Bible, is the one we should follow as compared to the pagan, Greek model we use in our public schools. And yet our Christian schools and colleges are following the ungodly public schools as they also are having their females play in sports just like the ungodly world. We don’t need sports to train our Christian children, especially our girls.

In my text verses Paul shows the foolishness of athletes going through all their bodily exercise and training in order to win a measly corruptible crown in this world. He tells us that our fight is not like a boxer beating the air but that it’s a spiritual battle of the flesh, not a physical battle. We are to keep our bodies, which are the dwelling place of God, clean and not defiled by sin. We are to keep our bodies in subjection and not give place to the lusts of the flesh. Christians will all receive an incorruptible crown, a crown of glory that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for us. But each one of us will receive rewards according to our works, so we are to run this race of life that we may obtain the highest rewards. We don’t work for salvation, that is a gift given to us by God’s grace when we’re saved by His beloved Son.

But to have the unsaved people following after sports like a religion and sacrificing their daughters to the foolishness and even physical harm of sports is one thing, but to have our so called Christians in Christian Education emulating this ungodly behavior, is downright heresy. Athletics is just another worldly lust of the flesh that we are exhorted to resist while in this world – “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world., the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world and the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever” – (I Jn.2:15-17). That’s exactly what Paul was telling us in (I Cor.9). Set your eyes on eternal things O Christian, not on earthly things. “… and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” – (I Tim.4:7,8). Don’t follow the world, follow God’s Word.

Paul was in Greece where their Olympic games had been going on for 700 years. Even so today we have women athletes trying to win an Olympic gold medal and so become a sports idol. The Olympic motto is ‘swifter, higher, stronger’ and God’s motto is ‘godliness, righteousness and holiness.’ At recent Olympics in Greece, women’s wrestling was a new sport. There were female wrestlers on the U.S. team who had received their training wrestling with men in college, since there were no women’s teams. They looked just like men smashing each other to the mats. Other aggressive sports are women’s hockey, boxing, football, rugby where the women look and act like men.

For a long time, women resisted the feminist call to play sports, but this didn’t sit well with the feminists, they said this was the fault of male oppression. In the name of ‘equality,’ feminist leaders poked and pushed women to join the games, until women in droves finally succumbed to the pressure. Christian parents are encouraging their daughters to participate in sports. This is all a rage in our schools, especially in the passage of Title IX by the feminists. One of the Satanic trends in schools today is sports for women.

The Bible says we are to train our daughters according to the Bible. Sports greatly hinders the development of godly, biblical femininity and encourages her to be an ungodly feminist. The fruits we see are that today our young Christian women are most often ill-prepared to be obedient wives and mothers. So much time is spent preparing our daughters to play sports and to be more like men. Instead of using this time preparing them to be godly women, we are training them to be like men so they can better compete with men in traditionally masculine roles and to usurp the authority of men. Sports teaches our daughters to be masculine and not feminine – to be muscular, not soft and feminine.

It is written – “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love there husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed” – (Tit.2:4,5). This is God’s training program for our daughters, not training for sports. We are to “bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” – (Eph.6:4). We are to “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” – (Prov.22:6). Don’t physically train them in sports, but Bible training in the heart.

The highest character of our Christian ladies is to have a meek and quiet spirit – (I Pet.3:4). Sports fosters nothing like that. They instead develop a competitive and contentious spirit that causes them great difficulty in marriage. Time spent in sports hinders the training of wifely duties in the home so that they cannot cook and raise children properly and be a good housekeeper etc. - feminism in sports gives us weak men and bossy, disobedient wives like Ahab and Jezebel.

Girls are being trained with the boys in sports in schools. Girls regularly participate in boy’s physical education and teams and compete against the boys themselves. More and more they compete in wrestling and even football. In one school the boys refused to wrestle the girls and forfeited their matches. It violated their sense of masculinity and they didn’t want to hurt them. Sports degrades the feminine nature of women. The masculinization process begins when they are young girls. The longer they play, the more likely that their femininity will be degraded. One of the reason women enter the military is due to their participation in sports and also ROTC. Women in sports is a direct result of the Jezebel-feminist spirit that is making women to become masculine and usurp authority over the man. It’s a spiritual battle between Satan’s feminists and God’s femininity.

Women’s sports promote immodest attire. The pressure to be immodest is one more reason women should avoid sports and in many cases we shouldn’t watch women’s competitions for the same reason. I hope you agree with me that we should keep our daughters from competitive sports and spend our time training them how to be biblically feminine women, wives and mothers and housekeepers. There is no eternal victory over death by following after the Devil’s false goddess named Nike but by being saved and born again by the Lord Jesus Christ and following Him. I’m warning you about the Jezebel-feminist spirit that is abounding today.

When I mediated upon my text about “running the race” God’s way and not the world’s way, I thought of Elijah and his victory run after his great victory on Mt. Camel. “And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel – (I Kings 18:46). The pace of Elijah’s feet was supernatural. He ran about 20 miles, almost a marathon, faster than Ahab’s chariot traveled. With running so popular today, it’s easy for us to grasp the greatness of – his great feat of the feet. And he did it in sandals, not a pair of Nike’s. He accomplished it by the hand of the Lord’s power, the same hand that just brought the rain from “a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand” – (I Kings 18:44). It was the same hand of the Lord that created the ‘hand’ of Michigan with all the fresh water of the great lakes upon it. Elijah ran with the ‘winged’ feet of the true God, not the winged feet of the goddess Nike.

We are reminded of the feet of God’s preachers whose “feet are shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” – (Eph.6:15). As it is written – “…How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things” – (Rom.10:15). We are to preach with our ‘tongues’ and open up their blind ‘eyes’ and ‘heel’ their ‘soles’ – amen.

Are you saved and born again of the Holy Spirit? If not, repent of your sins and believe on the Lord Jesus in your heart by faith in truth and you will have forgiveness of sins and become a new born again creature in Christ. Born again describes what happens to you when you’re truly saved, you become a new born again child of God – “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17).

When that happens to you, you have the greatest victory of all from the God of victory – you conquer death and hell and have eternal life. The true winner in life is the one who conquers his death through Christ. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life: and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” – (I Jn.5:11,12). O do not spurn the love and grace and mercy in His dear Son on the cross or the wrath of God abideth upon you.

Be born again and run the race for God spiritually not physically – “ye did run well…” – (Gal.5:7). Again – “…lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain” – (Gal.2:2). Again – “that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain” – (Philip.2:16). Again “…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us” – (Heb.12:1).

Run the race as a Godly Christian woman.
