Bearing Witness unto the Truth

“Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth – (Jn.5:33)

“Pilate therefore said unto him, art thou a king then? Jesus answered, thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.” – (Jn.18:37).

A trial judge over four North Carolina counties gave official notice to his court clerks that he intended to remove all references to God from his courtrooms. He decided to do this by having witnesses no longer to swear on the bible and the witness oaths would no longer mention God. For more than 200 years, North Carolina statutes have specified the language of the oath administered to court witnesses requiring the witness to swear the evidence you shall give to the court and jury in this case now on trial… shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God. This witness was to give this oath with his left hand on the bible and his right hand raised.

Nothing could be more important for a Christian and especially for a preacher than to bear witness unto the truth. O that every preacher of God would place his hand on the King James Bible, which is the scripture of truth and bear witness unto the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. It’s the most important calling he has because the Lord Jesus said that this was why He was born in the womb of the virgin Mary and this was the cause for which He came into this world – to bear witness unto the truth.

We have far too many preachers who preach selective truth. They preach only positive truth and cowardly refuse to preach negative truth. They preach on the grace of God and Heaven but neglect to preach on the wrath of God and hell. They accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative. You need to judge a preacher not only by what he preaches but by what he doesn’t preach. If the truth doesn’t get preached in the pulpits, the world will never hear it because only Jesus Christ and the Word of God is the truth. As born again witnesses for the Lord Jesus we must bear witness unto the truth and follow our example, the Lord Jesus, who is called “The faithful and true witness” – (Rev.3:14). We must follow the example of John the Baptist also who “Bare witness unto the truth” – (Jn.5:33).

Oh, we must preach the whole truth, the whole counsel of God – all of it – the good and the bad – because this is what we’re called to do. We are to be faithful and true witnesses and bear witness unto the truth, even unto death. We must look upon our pulpits as a witness stand knowing that we shall give account of our ministry one day and so we must preach the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. This is a high calling and an awesome responsibility and it takes much courage. When we become fearful and cowardly and refuse to preach the truth, this leads to apostasy and false doctrine. First a preacher remains silent and preaches only religiously correct truth but then it’s a downward spiral in apostasy. If he will not preach the truth, the Holy Spirit won’t teach him the truth and he loses more and more spiritual discernment.

(I Tim.6:13) says at the end – “And before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession..” I believe this speaks of Christ speaking the words of my scripture text when he said he came into the world to bear witness unto the truth. He spoke these words in connection with being a king. He rules now in the minds and hearts of saved people by his word of truth. Christ’s kingdom is a kingdom of truth and will prove to be when He comes back to rule over planet earth as the King of Kings and world emperor. His kingdom is not of this world today in which truth faileth but of that new world which is coming in which truth reigns eternally. The essential of Christ’s kingdom is truth. His errand and His business for coming to this world was bearing witness unto the truth – not only speaking the truth but living the truth – not only the talk but the walk.

Jesus said in (Jn.14:6) “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” And again in (Jn.8:32) “And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” And the truth is we are all sinners and we need a savior and so God the Father provided His son as the Savior of the world. Jesus Christ was walking – talking divine truth. He is God who cannot lie – (Titus 1:2). “A faithful witness will not lie” – (Prov.14:5). And so he didn’t. O praise the Lord, we have one man who lived on earth and didn’t speak one single lie. By being faithful witnesses we help Him set up His kingdom, the foundation and power and the spirit of which is truth – divine truth. We conquer hearts and get people saved by the convincing evidence of truth.

His subjects of His kingdom are those who believed His gospel of the kingdom when it was preached to them. They are of the truth and heard his voice and repented of their sins and got born again. By the grace of God, they were rescued from under the power of the devil who is the father of lies and liars – (Jn.8:44). All that are seekers after truth will hear the voice of Christ, for He is “Full of grace and truth” – (Jn.1:17). But it is written about the wicked unsaved – “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish: because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that they should believe a lie. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the spirit and belief of the truth– (2 Thes.2:10-13).

When we believe the King James Bible (The scripture of truth-Dan.10:21) and “The word of truth” – (Eph.1:13) about the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the truth, we get saved and then God indwells us with His Holy Spirit – “Even the spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: and ye also shall bear witness – (Jn.15:26). We have the spirit of truth and we shall bear witness unto the truth as God’s witnesses because God is a “God of truth” – (Ps.31:5). Our prayer should ever be “Lead me into thy truth and teach me” – (Ps.25:5).

Soon the Lord Jesus comes back as King of Kings to judge the earth. “For he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth” – (Ps.96:13). Jesus Christ came the first time not to wield the royal sceptre but to bear witness to the truth and preach the gospel of the kingdom. He comes back again as King of kings to rule over the earth in truth. His kingdom is a kingdom of truth and the subjects of His kingdom are those who believed the truth of Christ and got saved. O, Praise the Lord Jesus, we’ll not have a ruler like the world has now – liars. Our world is full of prime ministers and presidents etc. etc. who tell us a bunch of lies but He who is the truth is coming back and every word that He speaks will be the truth. No longer will we have rulers like Pontius Pilate who had the truth speaking to him and yet he said – “What is truth.” As it was prophesied of Christ in (Is.55:4) “Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and a commander to the people.”

Martyr means witness and that’s why so many preachers are afraid to preach the whole truth. They will suffer persecution and even death for the Word’s sake, as it happened to both John the Baptist and Jesus. The wicked crucified the truth and those who bear witness to the truth are hated today also. In (Rev.11:3-13) we see the two witnesses during the great tribulation, the two olive trees and two candlesticks. These two prophets of God, filled with the Holy Ghost, preach the truth to a wicked world. Clothed in sackcloth like the prophets of old, they bear witness unto the truth of God and they are martyred. They are hated so much that they are not given a decent burial – but they have eternal life and this is shown when they resurrect 3 ½ days later and ascend up to heaven. In these times of cowardly preachers, God will have His witnesses of truth testifying to a sinful world one last time before the Lord Jesus comes back. But God’s martyrs will receive a martyrs crown to wear for eternity.

O preacher of the Lord Jesus stand in your pulpit like it’s a witness stand and place your hand on the Word of truth and preach the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth as a faithful and true witness. Be strong and very courageous and have no fear what man may do to you. The worst they can do is kill you and you have already conquered death through Christ.

If you’re not saved, call upon the Lord Jesus with a humble and contrite heart in truth. Repent of your sins – turn away from your wicked ways and believe on Christ in your heart. And you will have the witness of the Holy Spirit in you forever. Then confess the Lord Jesus with your mouth to others giving a good testimony. The world will hate you but the Lord will love you. Keep your eyes on eternal life. Amen and Amen.

Keep bearing witness unto the truth
