Understanding the Scriptures

And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them. And he said unto them, these are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets and in the Psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” – (Lk.24:42-45).

May our precious Lord Jesus give us understanding of these four scriptures so that we might have the knowledge of understanding all the scriptures.

First, you must be a saved, born again saint of God to understand the Word of God. It’s the Holy Spirit in you that opens your mind and heart to understand the Holy Scriptures. The definition of understand is (to grasp the meaning of – have the power of comprehension – to discern). “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned– (I Cor.2:10-14). To discern means to show insight and understanding – to comprehend what is obscure. It is utterly impossible for an unsaved man to understand the Bible until he is born of the Spirit. The Bible was written by the Holy Spirit and you must have the Holy Spirit in you in order to understand it.

Then when you become a new born again babe in Christ you feed on the milk of God’s Word, the simple things. And then you go on to deeper things of God, the strong meat, the honey of God’s Word. “For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” - (Heb.5:13,14). When you’re about two years old in the Lord, you should be weaned from the milk of the Word and starting on strong meat. This is the time to eat honey as you begin to understand the deep things of God. The Bible is a book of milk and honey that will take you to the promised land of heaven.

The first thing Jesus shows us in (Lk.24) in understanding the scriptures is to eat honey, as both he and his disciples ate honey. It is not just the food of prophets like Ezekiel and John the Baptist and the apostle John, but for all the born again disciples of Christ. “My son, eat thou honey, because it is good: and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste: So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul…” – (Prov.24:13,14). Jonathan “put forth the end of the rod in his had, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened– (I Sam.14:27). But you don’t get the wisdom and understanding of the scripture unless you study the scriptures. “How sweet are thy words unto my taste; yea sweeter than honey to my mouth.: Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way” – (Ps.119:103,104). Like John on the isle of Patmos, you must consume God’s book and it will be in your mouth sweet as honey – (Rev.10:9,10).

The Bible is God’s bread from heaven – spiritual food for the soul. It’s the manna of God to man. It’s the nectar of God for you to drink and eat. Nectar is a sweet liquid that is secreted by the nectarines of a plant and is the chief raw material of honey. Bees fly from flower to flower gathering nectar and changing it into honey. My wife loves flowers, but I love the honey that comes from flowers that helps me to understand the scriptures. But “ye must bee born again” of God’s Holy Spirit in order to receive the nectar of God. It’s the drink of the born again child of God. Bee saved by Christ, bee fed with honey, bee a student of God’s Word and taught by the Holy Spirit, the master teacher.

Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh. To discern Him in all the scriptures is to understand the Bible. He is the honey of His father and the very nectar of life to a sinful, lost and dying world. We who are mortal can have immortality and forgiveness of sins through Christ. God wants us to be like honey bees and go after the nectar of God’s Word and store up the honey in our hearts. The honey of God’s Word is the nectar of God.

You cannot understand the scriptures until you have the scriptures in your hand. I believe my Cambridge 1611 King James Bible is the honey of God’s Word and that it holds the pure nectar of God’s truth that came from the Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley. I believe every word of every verse in it is filled with the holy nectar of God’s truth. God created the nectar in the flower and the honey of God’s true Word was also created by God. Hear what the N.I.V. (perversion) says in (Luke 24:42) “They gave him a piece of broiled fish and he took it and ate it in their presence.” They took away the ‘honey’ of God’s Word. Certainly this book is not the honey of God’s Word. You will get no understanding of the scriptures from the N.I.V. God’s born again honey bees will spend no time foraging for nectar in this book.

You will get more understanding from the Bible by not only studying it, but by meditating on it. “I have more understanding then all my teachers; for thy testimonies are my meditation” – (Ps.119:99). We see the Lord Jesus as the classic example of this verse. We see Him as a boy of twelve, sitting before the learned teachers in the temple “Both hearing them and asking them questions.” So thoroughly had He mastered the scriptures that it is written – All that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers” – (Lk.2:46-47). The Jews marveled at Him saying, “How knoweth this man letters having never learned” – (J.n.7:15). He had been educated in the finest university in the world. He had been taught by the Holy Ghost.

Let our cry go out to the Lord – “Let my cry come near before thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to thy word” – (Ps.119:169). God tells us, his sons – “So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding: If thou seekest her as silver, and searches for her as for hid treasures. Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding” – (Prov.2:2-6). You will never get much understanding of the scripture unless you value it above the treasures of this earth. You must put high value on understanding the Bible. You must search for Bible understanding like a bee searches for nectar. It is written “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” – (Eph.1:18). Eating honey and studying God’s Word will give you inward light. The honey gives you understanding and the bee’s wax candles give you light. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” – (Ps.119:105). The bees give us honey which enlightens us inwardly.

My prayer for all of God’s saints is – “That ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding” – (Col.1:9). I care not at all for the millions of books written by man but I care about God’s Book above all things. It will profit me not only in this life but in the eternal life to come. Because this short temporal life is only a prelude to eternity as we grow in spiritual understanding. And God may very well give us an encyclopedia of books of His Word so that we can feast on the honey of His Word forever. Pray for understanding the scriptures.

The born again believer whose will is totally and completely surrendered to God gathers spiritual wisdom as a bee gathers nectar. He eats honey and studies the Bible and rightly divides the Word of Truth. Spiritual wisdom brings understanding and spiritual insight – his inner eyes will be enlightened. The birth right of every believer is enjoyment of the Spirit of light in his life. Spiritual light is a blessing and privilege to all believers who will yield unreservedly to God. When a person is completely yielded to God’s will, God gives the person a deep love for God’s truth and a deep, burning desire for a better understanding of that truth. God enables him to see with the spiritual eyes of understanding and enlightenment that the average Christian knows nothing of. Notice the little word “all...”  all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” God’s wisdom and understanding given to us are unlimited. Not very many believers enjoy their spiritual birthright but accept second, third and fourth best.

When a believer completely yields to God’s will and permits God to fill him with spiritual knowledge and wisdom and understanding, God then removes the most which obscures his inner vision, a mist which hinders spiritual understanding and robs the believer of the depth of great spiritual truths in God’s Word, the King James Bible. It’s like a cataract, a clouding of the lens of the inner eyes, is removed and you can see clearly.

O how we must pray that the Lord Jesus would open our inner eyes and enlighten us with His understanding of the Holy Scriptures that our hearts would burn within us because of His truth. God wants us to be like honey bees and eagerly go after the nectar of God’s Word and store up the honey in our hearts and edify the body of Christ.

Are you saved and born again of God’s Holy Spirit? If not, repent of your sins and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins and a new godly nature. You will become a new creature in Christ with the ability to understand spiritual truths from God’s Word. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old thing are passed away; behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17). Christ will set you free from the bondage of your sins and redeem you. God sent his dearly beloved Son to die on the cross for you. Do not spurn this great love and reject the Savior. Receive the Lord Jesus today. Make this day your spiritual birthday and inherit eternal life – “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” – (Jn.3:36).
