Christ – The Tree of Life

“And the Lord God said, behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever: so he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” – (Gen.3:22,24).

“She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her” – (Prov.3:18).

As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him” – (Jn.17:2).

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23).

To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God” – (Rev.2:7).

There were two notable trees in Eden: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (which was against God’s law to eat and when Adam and Eve ate of it they sinned and death was their punishment) and the tree of life. No sooner did the gates of the garden clang shut behind the guilty pair that God posted Cherubim and a flaming sword at the entrance to keep safe the way to the tree of life. God was acting as much in grace as in government. If Adam and Eve had eaten of the tree of life in their sinful condition, they would have lived forever in their sins. They would have become like the fallen angels – deathless, sinful and beyond all redemption. Earth would have become an outpost of hell. Imagine what it would be like if every evil person who ever lived was still alive, getting older and older in wickedness. The cherubim were posted to prevent sinners from getting eternal life.

In (Prov.3:18) it says that wisdom is a tree of life – that God’s wisdom now offers us the tree of life. If we follow God’s wisdom we can have eternal life – the Bible’s wisdom points the way. On page after page of God’s Word wisdom points unwaveringly and unerringly to Christ. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16). In man’s fallen, sinful condition, he keeps eating from the tree of worldly knowledge trying to achieve the knowledge of eternal life. Scientists keep studying the genes of man and the DNA and trying to conquer death and live forever. But just about the time man reaches in to eat of the tree of life, God’s cherubim with the sword of the Lord will stop them and Jesus Christ will return. The Cherubim are still watching on God’s mercy seat looking for the blood of Christ, God’s perfect, supreme sacrifice for sin. Absolutely nobody will receive eternal life without forgiveness of sin by the Lord Jesus Christ. O, if Adam would have repented of his sin and said like the prodigal son he was – “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.” God would surely have forgiven him. But he kept his pride and he died. Jesus Christ is the only way back to the tree of life.

Surely you have seen a diagram of a family tree (A genealogical survey of family descendants). Well God has the most important one in His Bible. It is written in (Luke 3:22-8) the family tree and genealogy of the Lord Jesus Christ. “And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son: in thee I am will pleased. And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli and then was given Christ’s genealogy back to Adam – “Which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God” – (vs.38). This covers 4000 years from Adam to Christ and it’s the only family tree of genealogy we need – for it is truly the tree of life. Christ is the only tree of life – the only way back to eternal life.

From Adam’s tree of sin and death to Jesus’ tree of death on the tree-cross and his resurrection three days later to prove that if we’re saved by Christ we will have eternal life – the right to eat from the tree of life. From Adam, a son of God, to Jesus Christ the only begotten son of God. One son on a tree brought death upon the human race and one son on a tree, Jesus Christ, brought forgiveness and remission of sins and eternal life to all who believe on him. All who are saved and born again are brought back into God’s family tree and will eat of the tree of life and live forever. For the last 2000 years thousands of people have been saved after hearing the gospel of Christ and have become children of God. They have been brought back into God’s family tree of life.

We are born again into the family of God - “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever” – (I Pet.1:23). We become adopted children of God – “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” – (Rom.8:15,16). And again – “But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons” – (Gal.4:4,5). Yes, born again adopted children of God brought back into God’s family tree – into the tree of eternal life.

God adopts evil and wicked children, not good children, showing the marvelous love of God – “As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one” – (Rom.3:10). He takes us wicked and sinful people and redeems us thorough his beloved son on the cross and places his Holy Spirit in us and gives us the righteousness of Christ and adopts us as his children and makes us heirs of God. We are given all the love and rights of a son. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of adoption who places all the born again children of God in a legal standing before God and in relation to Him. Adoption means to take voluntarily a child of other parents as one’s own child. We are all the children of the devil. He is a cruel father as he teaches his children to be wicked as he is. But O’ the love of God who redeems us through his Son and we become adopted children of God – born again by the Hoy Spirit.

As my wife was quilting a tree of life comforter, I began to meditate on the tree of life. God’s comforter is the Holy Spirit – “But the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” – (Jn.14:26). And so the Holy Ghost has taught me this sermon on the tree of life. When we’re saved by the Lord Jesus, we receive God’s comforter, the Holy Spirit, which comforts us concerning death and assures us of eternal life – “And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life” – (I Jn.2:25). Christ is the tree of life and he gives us his comforter, the Holy Spirit.

I was born again on March 17, 1972. I was now linked through Christ to Adam and  back to my heavenly father and I felt strength for the future. The great void inside me was filled – I was a son of God. I found the way back to my heavenly father through Christ and I cried out – Abba Father. I have eternal life as an adopted child of God and an heir of God through Christ – (Gal.4:7). I was adopted out of the devil’s family and placed in the Holy family of God. And one day I will literally eat of the tree of life – because I’m an overcomer through Christ. “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches; to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God” – (Rev.2:7). How do we overcome? By being saved by Christ – “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God” – (I Jn.5:5).

Trust in Christ hanging on the tree and be saved from your sins and hell. He’s the tree of life to all who truly believe. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” – (I Pet.2:24). When you’ve saved you have a royal pedigree – you’re in the royal family of the King of kings – the Lord Jesus Christ – the Son of God. And one day we shall be kings and rule on this earth – “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” – (Rev.5:10).

“In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bear twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations” – (Rev.22:2). Jesus Christ is life from death. Only He has eternal life and I point you to Him in the hope that you may come and pluck the fruit and eat and live forever. The way to get the fruit is by faith in Jesus Christ. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” – (Eph.2:8). Repent of your sins and by faith turn to Christ for forgiveness of sins. Be saved by Christ and be born again by the Holy Spirit. Christ is the tree of life.
