The Thorn Curse
“… cursed is the ground for thy sake: in sorrow thou shalt eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee…” – (Gen.3:17,18).
“And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his holy one for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day” – (Is.10:17).
“And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!” – (Mt.27:29).
“But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing: whose end is to be burned” – (Heb.6:8).
The only thing the Lord Jesus wore on the tree-cross is the crown of thorns that the Roman soldiers crushed on His head as they mocked Him as king. He was naked except for the crown of thorns, as Adam and Eve were naked when they ate of the forbidden tree and committed the first sin. I’m preaching on the doctrine of thorns in the Bible and it’s very important. The thorns of (Gen.3:18) and the first sin ended up on the skull of our Savior on Calvary, the place of the skull, as He became the perfect, supreme sacrifice for sin. He was pierced, not only with nails but also with thorns.
Thorns came in with sin and were part of the curse of sin and God’s punishment while we live. The Lord God made man and all living creatures and living things, whether it has blood or whether it is vegetable, tree, etc., out of the ground. The curse upon the ground affects every living thing. Thorns stand for the sin of eating the forbidden fruit. Evil trees bear evil fruit. The evil fruit of sin is typified by thorns and thistles. Both words (thorns and thistles) start with the letter T, the letter that forms a cross and points directly to Jesus Christ on the tree-cross who became our sacrifice for sin, wearing a crown of thorns. Therefore Christ was made a curse for us, and died on the cross to remove the curse of sin from saved believers. As it is written - “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” – (Gal.3:13). And again – “For he made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” – (2 Cor.5:21).
Fruitfulness was God’s blessing in Eden, but after sin entered in, the ground was cursed – hence thorns. Man would labor, work hard, and sweat to earn a living until he dies and returns to the ground from where he was created. “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground: for out of it wast thou taken, and unto dust shalt thou return” – (Gen.3:19). Two days ago I sweated when I cut down my thorn bush. That’s why Jesus sweated in another garden (Gethsemane) while He prayed the night before the cross. He was to be made a curse for us, hence the sweat and crown of thorns. But our curse is turned into a blessing if we repent of our sins and get saved by Jesus Christ. But if you don’t get saved the curse of God is yet upon you. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” – (Jn.3:36). Yes – the curse of the thorns.
The thorn curse is not only for this life but shows the fiery wrath of God upon sinners in hell. “But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned” – (Heb.6:8). “But the fearful and unbelieving…. shall have their part in the lake of fire which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” – (Rev.21:8). Unsaved thorn people shall be as fuel for the fire of hell and Armageddon. Sinners have made themselves as thorns before the fire of God’s wrath, both on land and in hell. “Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire.” “For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briars and thorns..” – (Is.9:19,18). And Jesus Christ himself will come “in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” – (2 Thes.1:8). “And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briars in one day” – (Is.10:17). Thorn people who have rejected God’s grace and mercy in His beloved Son on the cross wearing the crown of thorns will suffer the vengeance of eternal fire.
The wicked (sons of Belial) are as thorns that will be burned – “But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands… and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place” – (2 Sam.23:6,7). Again in (Is.33:12) – “And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire.” Again in (Nahum 1:10) - “For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.” A sinner who spurns the free gift of God’s grace in His beloved Son is shown to be unredeemable and fit only for the fire as a thorn. Be no longer a pricking thorn, but call upon the Lord Jesus and be saved.
As God’s watchman the Lord showed me (Micah 7:1-6) and especially (vs.4) – “The best of them is a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity.” This is the character of the U.S. today, that the best of U.S. is like a thorn bush, scratching and tearing and piercing his neighbor – (I speak of those who are not saved). It’s a sad but true commentary of the worldly people in the U.S. and God’s watchmen have been warning U.S. to repent and turn from their wicked ways but they will not hear. Soon the day of the watchmen and the day of the visitation comes when God’s judgment will fall. Hear what God warns his watchman Ezekiel about when He called him to his office. “And thou, Son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee..” – (Ezk.2:6). God tells his watchman what the character of the people is that he will be preaching to – they are briers and thorns, scratching and tearing and vexing him wherever he goes – wicked thorn people. They are “pricking briers and grieving thorns” – (Ezk.28:24) trying to stop him. (Job 6:9) tells us about the thorn people “He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth: mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me.” When you preach God’s word of repentance to the ungodly wicked you will not be popular, they will not welcome you. We must especially not be afraid of their sharp tongues as they try to stop us with piercing words. Yes – the curse of thorns.
Pride is the besetting sin of
Wicked thorn people will try to hinder God’s husbandry, by choking the Word of God. They use money and the things of this world to stop the Christian from preaching the truth. Many a Christian and preacher has sold out for the riches of this world. “He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful” – (Mt.13:22). These thorns are more deadly than the persecuting kind. My ministry is not for sale. I want to be fruitful.
It’s important to see the burning thorn bush
O’ turn to the Lord Jesus on the lowly
tree-cross. See him with the crown of thorns becoming the sin curse for us on
Take heed to this watchman’s warning of the thorn curse
This thorn-cursed world is headed for a fiery Armageddon.
