The Serpent’s Final Doom and the Last Demagog: Gog of Magog

“Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshach and Tubal, and prophesy against him – (Ezk.38:1).

“And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them: and the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” – (Rev.20:7-10).

Let me say this immediately. Ezekiel’s prophecy of Gog and Magog in (Ezk.38 & 39) is a double prophecy that covers both the battle of Armageddon at the second coming of Christ and the final battle of all time at the end of the millennium. The world’s final battle is not to be fought at Armageddon – it is separated in time by 1000 years. It’s also the finale of Satan the Serpent and sin. It is Satan’s final attempt to rule the world. It is the final doom of the Serpent.

Much is preached on Armageddon, while so little emphasis has been placed on this ultimate battle of all battles. The Bible itself refers to Armageddon much more often than to this final battle of the ages. The reason is clear, in that so much on earth hinges on Armageddon... the end of the great tribulation, the second coming of Christ and the glorious millennium introduced out of it. The battle of Gog and Magog in (Rev.20) by contrast, has eternity in sharp focus. From that final battle proceeds the fiery overthrow of sins’ last rebellion and Satan’s final doom in the Lake of Fire. In a definite sense, therefore, this final battle outstrips Armageddon for sheer magnitude and eternal consequences. But the fire that comes down from Heaven by God burns up only the army of God and Magog, it does not burn the whole earth as at Armageddon – (See 2 Pet.3:10). It is centered only in the Holy Land. It is local in scope and not global. It is the old Serpent’s last battle against God – it’s the finale of his deadly venom of sin.

It is begun by the releasing of Satan from his 1000 year millennial confinement in the bottomless pit prison. It includes vast hordes of men on earth who have been chafing at the bit, so to speak, at the righteous reign of King Jesus and are ready for rebellion. I believe this satanic army is made up of the children of the Christians. They will give birth to children who have not been born again during the millennium and still have their sin natures. The rule of righteousness during the millennium is one thing, but a heart change is another. There will be outward conformity but not inward reality. It shows that even in this perfect environment man’s sinful nature must be changed – “Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:7).

Their immediate objective is to overthrow Emperor Jesus himself. Satan gathered his armies from the whole earth to try and stop King Jesus from coming at the battle of Armageddon before the millennium and he tries it again as soon as he’s released from prison after the 1000 years. You can see that Satan is not rehabilitated or reformed after his 1000 year sentence. He’s incorrigible – his heart is not changed. He is still reprobate and godless and he becomes the behind-the-scenes leader of those people that are also reprobate and godless after 1000 years. Satan finds millions of people whose hearts are at warfare with God, as his is. It’s an easy task to cause their rebellious sinful hearts to blaze forth in revolution of God’s righteous government on earth. This final great army invades the defenseless Holy Land and there the Father zaps them with searing flames from heaven and they are burned to ashes. Then as a grand finale, Satan is thrust into the flames of the eternal lake of fire to be tormented forever and ever. And because Gog and Magog are placed by God after the Millennium and not before, we must give the weight of Ezekiel’s prophecy to earth’s final battle and not Armageddon.

As always, Satan fins a human antichrist man like ‘the beast’ to be the visible leader of his army. He is called ‘Gog’ of the land of Magog and he will be the last demagog on planet earth. Dema-gog (dema means people) and (Gog- means leader) – hence –leader of the people. He is the ultimate evil leader who makes use of popular prejudices in order to gain power. He will tell people what their unregenerate hearts want to hear. He will champion the cause of all the unsaved at the end of the millennium.

He will be the last demagog like der fuhrer (The leader). I don’t believe it’s happenstance that ‘Gog’ in our English language means ‘leader’ and dema-gog is an evil leader of the people. It is God showing us Bible truth and shedding light on Gog and Magog.

(Rev.20:7-10) shows us the final revolt and rebellion against the Lord by sinners and Satan. The millennium is a time of testing of man under ideal conditions. Many human hearts remain unchanged and many will turn their backs on Christ and righteous living and will join with Satan. It shows us how terrible the heart of man is. We absolutely need a new heart and to be born again by Christ. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings” – (Jer.17:9,10). This is the last rebellion against a Holy God – never again will there be sin, Satan, or death – we enter the eternal state.

(Ezk.38-39) is a double prophesy pointing to two wars – Gog and Magog I and Gog and Magog II – like WWI and WWII. But I believe the actual names Gog and Magog will be used only in (Rev.20) at the final war. Maybe only the initials G.O.G. or the final demagog’s actual name. But God will bring this name out at the end of the millennium and after about 950 years of ruling and reigning with Christ we’ll be looking for it.

The last rebellion of man against God that started in Eden is shown here. The ending of man’s disobedience and sin against his Creator and rejecting of his grace in his beloved Son. We see two things that haven’t changed – unrepentant Satan and unregenerate mankind. Men are still men and sin is still sin and Satan knows how to bring the two together. He will have one final murderous fling before he’s thrown in the Lake of Fire. Unsaved people will begin to become more and more restless and disobedient toward the end of the millennium and Satan will have prepared his man to lead them. He will have another antichrist telling the people what they want to hear. It’s the final hurrah of the serpent.

There have been many demagog’s down through history and here we see the final demagogGog of Magog. Like Napoleon, he will meet his Waterloo, a decisive final defeat. This rebellion is permitted by God in order to bring to light the hidden works of darkness of the human heart. The final wrath of God falls – the final chaff of human fruit is burnt up. There will not be one sinner left on earth ever again. It’s the end of Satan, that old Serpent, and the great tempter and deceiver, who has tempted man to sin since the garden of Eden. He is finally thrown in the Lake of Fire. The Serpent’s deadly poison of sin and death has ended – Alleluia.

We know what Gog, the last demagog, will be like. We have had many political leaders who used flattering lips and a deceitful tongue in order to seize power and get the people to follow him. We also call them dictators. Blind leaders of blind people. He will give a lot of speeches and becomes popular and powerful by pandering to ignorance and prejudice. He will use religion also. He will be the opposite of Christ in character, proud instead of humble. He will try to usurp the greatest throne in the world – the throne of Christ in Jerusalem where Christ rules as King of Kings over the world. Satan’s temptation of power and glory will find fertile ground in this last demagog as it did with the Beast 1000 years before. This is what Satan dangles in front of his ambitious man – “Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me” – (Mt.4:8,9).

Jesus Christ is the leader God has chosen to rule planet earth – “Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people” – (Is.55:4). All of Satan’s other pretenders to His throne are evil leaders and demagogs and will never usurp His throne.

The battle of Gog and Magog proves an important truth – the most important truth of all – “Ye must be born again”“Ye must be born of God.” Your evil heart must be changed. You must become a new creature in Christ with the Holy Spirit in you. Are you a rebel and an enemy of God because of sin? Repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart by faith. Call upon the name of the Lord Jesus to save you and inherit eternal life. Don’t trample under foot the precious blood of Christ on Calvary and God’s amazing grace. Avail yourself of God’s mercy so His judgment and wrath will not fall upon you and so you won’t follow the Beast soon to come. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7).
