The Still Small Voice of the Holy Spirit

“And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake: but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice –(I Ki.19:11,12).

“…The Holy Ghost said, Separate me Baranabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them” – (Acts 13:2).

After Elijah’s great victory on Mt. Carmel, he fled in fear from Queen Jezebel who had killed all the other prophets of God, and now she threatened his life as well. So Elijah fled 200 miles south to Mt. Sinai and climbed the mountain like Moses to meet the Lord for help. Though God gave Elijah no command to go to Mt. Sinai, yet he must have been directed there by the secret providence of God. It is written – “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps” – (Prov.16:9). Again – “Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way” – (Prov.20:24). Again – “… I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” – (Heb.13:5). While he was running away from Jezebel, he was running toward God.

It was at Mt. Sinai that God met Moses at the burning bush. Then later when Israel was liberated and redeemed by God out of bondage from Egypt, God gave them the law there also. God spoke to Moses and the Israelites at that time with a loud booming trumpet that terrified them – “For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest. And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words: which voice they that heard intreated that they should not be spoken to them any more: And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake” – (Heb.12:18,19,21). And so God brought again the wind (tempest) and the earthquake and the fire for Elijah, but the Lord didn’t speak out of these to Elijah as He did to Moses.

God was not speaking with Elijah on the O.T. ground of the law of Moses, but God would speak to Him on the N.T. ground of God’s grace. He would speak to him on Mt. Zion, the Mount of Grace. He would speak to Elijah with the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. Which is exactly how God speaks to His born again saints today. God speaks to us today by the Holy Ghost that indwells each believer. Not outwardly to our physical ears with a loud trumpet voice, but inwardly with the still small voice of the Holy Spirit, as He did to the early church in the N.T. We hear today with spiritual ears, as it is written – “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches” – (Rev.3:22). God speaks through His Holy Spirit that indwells the heart and soul of each true believer that is born again through Christ. We dwell no longer on Mt. Sinai but on Mount Zion – “But ye are come unto Mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels” – (Heb.12:22). The wrath of God on Mt. Sinai is no longer upon us, but our sins have been forgiven through Christ and we have peace with God, and He speaks within us as a father to His children. He speaks to us in a milder way with His still small voice of the Holy Spirit.

God has spoken to us in the N.T. now through the words of His beloved Son and we are to hear Him. And God showed us this on another mount, the mount of transfiguration when Christ was transfigured and the disciples seen a vision of Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus. And God said – “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him” – (Mt.17:1-5). And when we hear the gospel of Christ preached and we repent of our sins and believe in Him in our heart by faith, we are saved and the Holy Ghost takes up residence in our heart.

It is written – “Howbeit when he , the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth,: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come” – (Jn.16:13). The Holy Spirit speaks inwardly to the saints, in conveying information to our inner ears and minds. The more time we spend in God’s Word, the more we will get to know the still small voice of the Holy Spirit and will not follow a strange voice. We learn to tune in to His voice and begin to hear Him more clearly. He is the great infallible teacher of the Bible and will always glorify the Lord Jesus. “He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you” – (Jn.1:14). Again – “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” – (Jn.10:27). The Lord speaks to us by His Spirit but He will never contradict His written Word. It is our safeguard, the truth and light of His Word.

The blessed works of the Holy Spirit in revealing to the saints the precious things of God is brought out also in (I Cor.2:10) – “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things yea, the deep things of God.” The Holy Spirit in us speaks in a still small voice and teaches us all things and shows us things to come in the future, and always magnifies the Lord Jesus. The inspiration of the Holy Scriptures is in a unique sense the works of the Holy Spirit; “holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” – (2 Pet.1:21). So too the interpretation of scripture is the special work for the Spirit. During times of persecution, Christians are told by Christ – “But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost” – (Mk.13:11). So, not only does the Spirit speak in us with a still small voice, but He can also use our mouth to speak in prophecy or in times of peril, and that means today as well.

But know this also and beware, the evil spirit also counterfeits the Holy Spirit, and speaks inside of people with a still small voice, and these people hear voices. And these evil spirits can also use the person’s vocal cords and speak through them imitating God’s prophets. But these evil, unclean spirits will lead the persons into evil, and not into holiness as the Holy Spirit does. “And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him” – (Mk.1:23-26). Satan, the great deceiver, imitates God in every area.

Many people, including children, take drugs and contact the devil in the forbidden occult, and go deeply into sin and become possessed of evil spirits. And thousands of American youth are into the occult today, getting hooked on it through Harry Potter books. No unsaved psychiatrist can cure a person that hears voices of evil spirits. Only a born again Christian with the power of God can cast the evil spirit out. “…In my name shall they cast out devils…” – (Mk.16:17). “…But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour” – (Acts 16:18). And God warns us – “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” – (I Jn.4:1). The evil spirits have a still small voice also in some people.

Several times in the N.T. it is written that – “The Holy Ghost said” or “Thus saith the Holy Ghost.” Yes, the Holy Ghost speaks inwardly to those who are born again and saved by Christ. God speaks to the inner spiritual ears, not the outer physical ears. But sometimes God fills His prophets with the Holy Spirit and uses their mouths to prophesy the Word of God and so then the Holy Spirit is speaking outwardly.

After the angel Gabriel told the virgin Mary that she would be the mother of the Lord Jesus, she immediately went to visit her cousin Elizabeth and as soon as Mary entered Elizabeth’s house it is written – “…and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb” – (Lk.1:41,42). Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost and prophesied with a loud voice. Thus, the Holy Ghost used Elizabeth’s vocal cords to prophesy, and her words are recorded as scripture. And that’s the same way we received the whole Bible. And so also the holy women of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

And then we have the Holy Spirit gift of speaking in other tongues by the 120 disciples of the Lord on the Day of Pentecost when they were all filled and baptized by the Holy Ghost. “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” – (Acts 2:4). And so they were able to speak to the thousands of Jews gathered from every nation and language and “speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God” – (Acts 2:11). And there are many of God’s saints who speak in other tongues today that have this gift of the Holy Spirit. But the devil also counterfeits this gift as well and causes havoc in the church. Those who have this gift of the Holy Spirit speak a language that is foreign to them and that they have never spoken and they do not use the language for normal conversation, but to edify the church. This also is the still small voice of the Holy Spirit who has indwelt some of the saints who have been baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ. “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body…” – (I Cor.12:13). But not all of God’s church speaks in other tongues, but have other gifts of the Holy Spirit to edify the church – (I Cor.14). But most certainly we can see and hear the voice of the Holy Spirit with the gifts of tongues in these end times – (Acts 2:16-21). Yes, the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. See (Jn. 1:15-17)- John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus and the grace of God. John said “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” That’s what Elijah on Mt. Sinai is showing us with the still small voice of God – a different relationship.

Do you have the still small voice of the Hoy Spirit in you? Are you saved and born again? Will you raise from death unto eternal life by the Holy Spirit in you?  “…Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” – (Rom.8:9). “Now if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, …shall also quicken your mortal body by his Spirit that dwelleth in you” – (Rom.8:11). Repent of your sins and believe in Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins and be saved from hell and become a new born creature in Christ having eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16).
