Saved from the Sentence of Death

“But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will deliver us” – (2 Cor.1:9,10).

News – August 15, 1997, “It is the judgment of this court that the defendant, Timothy McVeigh, is sentenced to death. An unrepentant Timothy McVeigh made no plea for mercy Thursday. As he was formally sentenced to death for the Oklahoma City bombing.” He read a statement that blamed the Government for the bombing. Timothy McVeigh, murderer of over 100 people, blames somebody else for his sins of murder. He does not admit to his sins nor does he repent of them but passed the blame on to somebody else.

The world expected him to show repentance and sorrow for his sins of murder, to admit it and fall upon the mercy of the court. And yet most people in the world will not repent of their sins to God almighty, the Judge of heaven and earth. They will not cast themselves upon God’s mercy seat by repenting of their sins and believing on the Lord Jesus and having the blood of Christ forgive their sins and save them from the sentence of death. Not only the first death of the body, but the everlasting death in the lake of fire.

As it is written in (Rev.20:11-15) “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before god; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” No more awesome scene can be found in God’s word then here. Every single soul on earth is in exactly the same position as Tim McVeigh. Oh, most are not as bad sinners as him but all are sinners and guilty in the eyes of a holy God and deserving of hell.

The judgment of sentence is pronounced and carried out. Death – the second death – an everlasting death sentence, dying continually for eternity. The first death of the body and the first hell that an unsaved soul goes to at death awaiting the final great white throne judgment and to be formally and judicially sentenced to eternal death in the lake of fire. All whose names are not written in the Lamb’s book of life and who are not saved will receive this final sentence of death. All who have not been saved by Jesus Christ from this sentence of death. Is your name written there?

Everyone ever born on planet earth has the sentence of death within themselves. Because of sin the first death has been programmed within us by a just and righteous God. We die a little each day. And everyone must fear the sentence of eternal death by the Supreme Judge of the universe. “Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth” Timothy McVeigh has been sentenced to death by a human judge but the awesome judgment at the great white throne awaits him yet. And it awaits everyone who dies unrepentant and unsaved. Have you been pardoned by God because you’ve been saved by his dear son the Lord Jesus? I praise the Lord daily for saving me from the final hell. O the mercy and grace of God. He saw my heartfelt repentance and belief in Jesus Christ on March 17, 1972 and he saved me and delivered me from the second death where I was scheduled to go. Jesus put the fear of death in the right perspective. “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell” – (Mt.10:28).

Jesus Christ saves us from the sentence of the second death and in reality he saves us from the first death of the body as well because we are resurrected with new bodies unto eternal life. So the sentence of the first death is reversed also, praise the Lord Jesus, for he saves us from so great a death – (both deaths). (Rom.3) tells us that all have sinned and that all the world is found guilty before God. The verdict is in and the sentence of death is already written in his law. The great white throne judgment will be the judicious and formal execution of his sentence of death. Verse (19) says the law of God condemns everyone – “That every mouth may be stopped.” All are guilty of sin – all are guilty of breaking God’s laws. Some are greater sinners than others, but there is only a difference in the degree and the amount of their sins. There is no difference in the fact that all are sinners and God has declared – “The soul that sinneth shall die.”

God has executed his sentence of death (the first death of the body) upon everyone that has ever lived, except Enoch and Elijah. , to show the rapture. The rapture and translation of the living born again saints soon to come will show the world that these saints have been saved from the sentence of both deaths. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23). Don’t turn him down – be saved. Tim McVeigh had the chance to be saved from the second death. Many have been saved while on death row awaiting death. They still died the first death but escaped the second death sentence. “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation” – (Heb.2:3). Everyone living is on death row awaiting death and we all have a chance to be saved before we die but after that it’s too late.

Don’t put salvation off – “Behold now is the accepted time: behold now is the day of salvation” – (2 Cor.6:2). Not tomorrow – today. You will not escape. The sentence of the second death is as sure as the sentence of the first death. As surely as you see people die, as surely as you go to funerals, as surely as you shall go to your own funeral – just as surely you will be cast into the lake of fire. All of us are under the sentence of death by the Supreme Judge of the universe but before the sentence is carried out, we can be pardoned and set free. Jesus is looking for us to repent of our sins and believe on him for remission of sins. Then he will suffer the punishment of death for us and we won’t have to go to hell- saved from hell –alleluia. He’s looking for us to humble ourselves and acknowledge our sin and plead mercy to him, knowing we’re heading for the lake of fire. He’s looking for repentance and true belief in the only savior the Lord Jesus Christ.

God told Adam that in the day he sins and breaks the law and eats of the tree of knowledge – “Thou shalt surely die” – (Gen.2:17). He ate and he surely died. The sentence of death was executed and has been executed on every person since. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into he world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” – (Rom.5:12). All sin and all die. But O the marvelous grace of God – the free gift of God in his son. You can be pardoned and set free from your sentence of death – don’t reject it. But he requires what we expected of Tim McVeigh – repentance of sin.

In (Du.17:8-11) we see the judges of Israel and the sentence of judgment. Thousands of years ago God gave righteous laws to Israel to live by and gave judges to pass sentence on them that broke his laws. And when they broke some laws the sentence was the sentence of death – the death penalty – capital punishment. We are all under a death sentence because we all are law breakers and sinners. But certain grievous sins meant a termination of life immediately, not when we’re 75 years old. These are the sins in the bible that God required the sentence of death. 1. Murder 2. false witness in capital offenses 3. kidnapping 4. adultery 5. all sex sins – incest, sodomy, fornication, bestiality, rape 5. idolatry 7. witchcraft 8. profaning the Sabbath 9. blaspheming God 10. cursing or striking your parents.

The mode of death was stoning. God’s commandments were written with the finger of God in stone tablets and breaking the commandments results in the stone killing you. Stoned to death – both deaths – the second stoning in the lake of fire and brimstone. So most of the people in the U.S. that clamor for Tim McVeigh’s death (and justly so) have committed sins that God requires immediate capital punishment for immediate - sentence of death. How many millions in the U.S. are guilty of idolatry? There are 60 million Roman Catholic idolators alone – (I was one). How many adulterers and adulteresses do we have? How many millions committing fornication each day? How many blaspheme God and Jesus Christ every day? How many curse and hit their parents?

The point in this. We are all guilty sinners before God. We are all under the sentence of death – both the first death of the body and the second death in the lake of fire. Hear the sentence of death in this one sentence of God – “Thou shalt surely die.” And again in this sentence – “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:213). We see the perfect balance of judgment and mercy. God is a kind and merciful judge. He wants to pardon you. He has no pleasure in our deaths. He so loved us that he gave his only begotten son to die on the cross of your sins. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16). If you are saved by Christ, the sentence of eternal death falls upon Christ and not on you. “And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. And Pilate gave sentence that is should be as they required” – (Luke 23: 23,24). So the sentence of death passed on Jesus by Pilate and the death was crucifixion – death on the cross.

Repent of your sins and receive Christ as savior. Let your sentence of death fall on him and not on you. You can pass from death unto life. Don’t turn God’s pardon down. Get you name written in the book of life before it’s eternally too late. Be saved form the sentence of death.

P.S. – On March 17, 2005 – “Scott Peterson was sentenced to death by Judge Delucchi for the murder of his pregnant wife Laci. When the judge gave Laci’s father an opportunity to address Peterson he said – “You are going to burn in hell for this.” This is absolutely true, except if Peterson truly gets saved by Jesus Christ on death row. And if Laci’s father doesn’t get saved he will burn in the lake of fire also. Amen and Amen.
