The Four Seasons of Life

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born and a time to die.”

Like the four seasons of the year, we are born in the newness of Spring life and then comes middle and old age during the summer and fall, and our hair starts to fall like the fall leaves. And then comes the winter of death when our hair turns white as snow and we’ve always cold. Yes, we have our four seasons of allotted life – there is a time to be born, and a time to die.

In between these two times is our ‘time of life,’ and it’s a very short time. Life at its best is very brief. Life is a sinful thing, a serious thing, a short thing. Let us pay heed to the unknown length of fuse each one of us still has left. Our life is a dying life: as soon as we are born we begin to die and every day of our life carries us so much nearer to death. Like grass, it’s a short life. “For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” – (I Pet.1:24,25). Only Jesus Christ can give you victory over death.

Jesus Christ was sent to this earth from the heavenly Father to solve man’s greatest problem; sin and the punishment of sin, which is death. “The wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23). Your physical birth will last only a few short years, therefore you must be born again of the Holy Spirit to have eternal life. “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever” – (I Pet.1:23). The gospel of Christ is the living Word of God, and when you believe the gospel, the seed is germinated in you by faith and you are born again into a new holy creature in Christ. One day you will receive a new body, an incorruptible, spiritual, heavenly, eternal body that shall never grow old or die. God has a new body for you – believe on Christ and be born again.

Receive your new birth and your own personal Easter, which was in the Spring of life. You will be crucified with Christ and be born again spiritually. It’s the earnest of everlasting life. You can have the resurrection unto the eternal Spring of eternal life.

It is written – “For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night” – (Ps.90:4). God knows the tyranny that time has over us. Suppose you live as long as Methuselah lived – almost a thousand years – that would be just like one day or a three-hour watch in the night, in the sight of God. Even if you lived a thousand years, you wouldn’t be very much. Life is so brief compared to eternity. God sees us hurrying through our little span of life, our allotted 70 years and trying to live all the years we can. His sympathy goes out to us because of the tyranny time has over us.

Some of the patriarchs lived nearly a thousand years, but what is their long life compared to God’s eternal life. A thousand years is nothing compared to God’s eternity. Between a minute and a thousand years, there is some proportion, but between man’s time and God’s eternity there is none. Look at your watch and consider the truth of God’s Word, your life is ticking away fast.

Each New Year’s Eve, several of us preachers would get together and hold a ‘watch night’ service. It was the end of one year of our allotted time of life and the beginning of another year. One watch night service I preached on (Ps.90:1) and it was a very sobering message. Many of the unsaved people of the world were having their ungodly New Years parties with drunkenness and such, showing their foolish waste of the last year and probably the next one as well. Each one of us is going to live for eternity, either in the joy of eternal life with the Lord Jesus or in eternal death in the lake of fire – (Rev.20:15). Listen and take heed to this Bible Watchman – There is a time to be born and a time to die, make sure you’re born again through Jesus Christ before you’re allotted time runs out and you spend eternity in hell because you wouldn’t be saved – “Now is the accepted time: behold, now is the day of salvation” – (2 Cor.6:2). Life is short, don’t put off salvation a minute longer, eternity beckons. There is a time to be born and a time to die and in between there is a time to be saved. Be wise, be saved. It’s a short life and a long eternity. Don’t die unsaved like a fool.

“The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away” – (Ps.90:10).

We have 70 years of life, or if we have a strong constitution, maybe 80 years. Yet the last 10 years extra have little joy, but only prolongs misery and makes our death more tedious; for “even their strength is labour and sorrow.” For the years have come which they have no pleasure in. In the sweat of our face we must eat bread and the older we get, the harder it is to do our necessary jobs. If you make it to 80 years, you are going to have a lot of rheumatism and arthritis and other physical problems. The worst part is that old people rarely get saved because they have rejected Christ during their youth and have become hardened in sin. O be saved in your youth and become a born again saint of God and live your life for the Lord Jesus, keeping your eyes on eternity and eternal rewards and eternal life.

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Ps.90:12). Count up your years of age and multiply it by 365 day and number your days and consider how few they are and how fast the years flew by and how little while we have to live in this world. We must live under a constant apprehension of the shortness and uncertainty of life and the near approach of death and eternity. Don’t be like the vast majority of people who don’t want to even think or talk about their impending death because of sin. Number your days and consider your death and apply your heart unto God’s wisdom and be saved from your sins and death by Jesus Christ who is the wisdom of God. Consider how short the four seasons of life are.

Be wise and be saved today. Believe the Word of God – “… the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” – (2 Tim.4:15). You can conquer your death. Eternal life and immortality is only through Christ the Son of God – “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his son” – (I Jn.5:11). Again – “I am the resurrection and the life: he that beleiveth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” – (Jn.11:25). Again – “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” – (Jn.14:6). The Lord Jesus Christ is the Prince of Life – (Acts.3:15). Again – “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ – (I Cor.15:54-57). It’s a happy birthday, but a very sad death day. But for a saved saint – “to die is gain” – (Phil.1:21).

When you’re old – hold fast. “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth. O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, fo sake me not; until I have showed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come” – (Ps.71:9,17,18).

It’s not how a man lives his life that counts most, it’s how he ends his life. This must be preached during the end time apostasy and falling away just before the Antichrist comes. This old age Psalm means much more to me now when I’m 68 years old than 20 years old. Now I pray, “O Lord Jesus, don’t let me fritter away the end of my life. Help me to hold steadfast to the end of my life and not bring shame on you.” When we’re old and our physical strength fails us, we needn’t have our spiritual strength fail also: we can be strong and very courageous unto death. O God help us to run the race of faith strong and hit the finish line at the end of our lives with a sprint of speed so we can say like Paul – “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering  and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine: but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” – (2 Tim.4:3-7).

Paul was old and getting ready to die and he preached these words to us, so that when we’re old we would hold fast and stand the ground, and hit the finish line strong like him. Let us die as strong, faithful warriors. Not cowards afraid to preach the truth to wicked America, but bold as lions, not compromising as we get older. If we don’t, we may have to hold our head down, ashamed for all of eternity.

We have the sure promise of God that He will not forsake His born again children in their old age. “…which are born by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: and even to your old age I am he: and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear: even I will carry, and will deliver you” – (Is.46:3,4). If we are born of God, and His children, He will not forsake us in old age. Even when you’re too old to dress yourself, and you’re infirm and sick, and even your family grows weary of you – I will take care of you. I will bear you up and carry you in your way, and carry you home to live with me in heaven at last. I am your Father – I birthed you and I will take care of you – PTL.

Are you saved from your sins and hell and been born again and baptized by the Holy Spirit? If not, repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart by faith and you will become a new born again creature in Christ. Born again describes what happens to you when you’re truly saved. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17).

Water baptism and joining a church made with hands can never save you. Only the Lord Jesus can baptize you with the Holy Spirit into the true Church made without hands. “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body…” – (I Cor.12:13). O do not spurn the love and grace of God’s dear Son on the cross who offers you forgiveness of sins and eternal life – “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him” – (I Jn.4:9). God had set before you eternal death and eternal life. Choose life and eternal life through Christ. Choose the Prince of Life.

Today can be your eternal birthday, you can become a born again child of God, the greatest Daddy in the universe. One day your physical birthday will cease at death, but your spiritual birthday goes on forever. One day you can have your billionth birthday party. PTL Jesus – the Prince of life.
