Search the Scriptures

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” – (Jn.5:39).

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” – (Acts 17:11).

“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searchest all things, yea, the deep things of God” – (I Cor.2:10).

“If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures” – (Prov.2:4).

In (Jn.5:31-39) Christ produces witnesses that bear testimony to Him that He was sent of God. The last witness which the Lord Jesus cites is the most important of all – the Holy Scriptures. The Word of God from Genesis to Revelation bear witness of Christ and they shall abide forever and never pass away – “By the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever” and “endureth forever" – (1 Pet.2:23,25). The Holy Writings, given by inspiration of God, is the most important witness to Christ of all. Beyond them there is no appeal: above them no higher authority: after them no further witness.

Here is a command from the Lord Jesus – “Search the scriptures.” We are to search God’s Word, not just read it and not just meditate upon it, or study it. You get out your Strong’s Concordance and taking the key word find where it is throughout your whole Bible and then search it out and let the Holy Spirit in you teach you the wisdom of God. And the wisdom of God is Christ. The grand motive for searching the scriptures is that they “testify” of Christ. The Old Testament bears witness of Christ as well as the New Testament – (Luke 24:27).

Jesus is the center, soul, heartbeat and bloodstream of the whole Bible. If He were taken out of the Bible, it would be an empty, meaningless book. The Old Testament witnesses of Jesus in specific prophesies, in typical persons, in feasts, ceremonies, sacrifices and promises. He is the complete fulfillment of Old Testament scriptures. He fulfilled every jot and tittle of the law. He dotted every ‘i’ and crossed every ‘t’ – (Mt.5:17,18). Christ is ‘it.’ He has ‘it.’ He is the royal star come down from heaven. He is the charismatic one, full of the charisma and Spirit of God.

The Old Testament scriptures were the Word of God, but the Word not yet in flesh. Hear the witness of the scriptures to Christ – “And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…” – (Jn.1:14). Yes, search the scripture, for they testify of Christ.

The saddest thing in the church today is the neglect of Bible study and this is why there is so much ignorance among believers. We should follow the example that enobled the Bereans in (Acts 17:11) – who searched the scriptures – ‘daily.’ We must search out a subject and a doctrine through the whole Bible, comparing one passage with another, and explain one by another. Strong’s Concordance is the ‘searching book’ to find the references.

We must search as for hidden treasures, as those that mine for gold, or silver or rubies or dive for pearls – (Prov.2:4). And Christ is the treasure hid in the field of the scriptures. You must turn your heart away from the treasures of this world. “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal” – (Mt.7:20). Searching out God’s Word is hard work, but the treasure of God’s truth and wisdom is beyond price. “If thou seeketh her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures – (Prov.2:4). Our search for Bible wisdom must be just as resolute as the search for gold. People wear themselves out to unearth worldly treasure, which they squander on worldly things and die and go to hell. We should give ourselves unstintingly to the quest for eternal treasure and eternal life in Christ, the priceless wisdom that can only be found in God’s Word.

If a young Christian man is searching for a good wife, then he must search the scriptures to find out God’s wisdom concerning this matter – you must search for her in the scriptures and then you will find ‘Ruby.’ You will not find ‘Ruby’ in the books of this world – “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies” – (Prov.31:10).

Some days when you search the scriptures and go mining, you get only a little gold dust, but other times you strike it rich and find the golden nugget of God’s wisdom. You must prefer it above all the riches of this world. You must labor for it as those who dig in the mines and pursue it with all your heart. You must rise up early and stay up late searching the scriptures and the Holy Spirit will show you the Bible treasures, even the deep things of God. Then you will shout out with great glee – “Eureka – I have found it” I found the gold of God.

O, saint of God, born again of the Holy Spirit and truly saved – search the scriptures. Then you will not be deceived by the religious false prophets that abound today. In (Jn.7:52) the Jewish religions leaders said to Nicodemus “Art thou also of Galilee? Search and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet” But if you search the scriptures you find this about Galilee – “…beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined” – (Is.9:1,2). These verses spoke of Christ and were confirmed in the New Testament in (Mt.4:14-16). The town of Nazareth, where Jesus grew up, was in Galilee of the Gentiles because now the gospel was to be preached to the Gentiles and they too could have the chance to be saved and become the people of God. O, search the scriptures and don’t be lazy, because lazy people are deceived easily. You can’t grow in the Lord, one grade at a time, if you don’t study. You can’t cheat the Holy Spirit. Yes, you need good, godly Bible teachers, but you’ll never know a true teacher from a false, unless you study the Word of God and searching the scriptures is essential to Bible study. Nazareth also looks over Armageddon where Christ comes the second time.

The definition of search is – (to look into or over carefully and thoroughly in an effort to find or discover something – to make painstakingly investigation or examination). The Holy Spirit in you will help you search the scriptures and shed light on the dark and deep truths of God. The Holy Spirit is ‘God’s spiritual Searchlight’ projecting a powerful beam and illuminating the Word of God. “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea,the deep things of God” – (I Cor.2:10). Unless you’re born again of the Holy Spirit you cannot discern Bible truth. It is utterly impossible for any man to understand anything about the spiritual things of God until he is born of the Spirit. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” – (I Cor.2:14).  The Bible is a spiritual book, written by the Holy Spirit and only the person born again by the Holy Spirit can discern it. No matter how intelligent, well educated or well trained the human mind may be, it is only through the work of the Holy Spirit that the things of the Spirit are made known. It is impossible for the unregenerate man to understand the things of the Spirit of God. The revelation that comes through the Holy Spirit unto us who believe is impossible with the natural mind; you must have the mind of Christ – (I Cor.2:16).

Many people have written to me when reading my sermons of my WEB site and the first thing I ask them is – “Are you born again?” and they usually don’t know what I’m talking about. They wish to understand things in the end times but it’s totally impossible because they don’t have the Holy Spirit and can’t discern spiritual things. Born again describes what happens when you’re truly saved.

God’s minister should never enter the pulpit until he has studied the message the Holy Ghost has laid upon his heart; searching as the Spirit leads, feeding his own heart from the deep things of God in order to feed others. He must be fed before he can feed others. He must be led before he can lead others. As we use our free will and search the scriptures, the Holy Spirit in us turns on his ‘Searchlight’ and sheds light on the scriptures and teaches us God’s truth. Without the Holy Spirit searchlight you will search God’s Word in vain. We need a reading light, a student lamp and we also need a searchlight from the Holy Spirit as we search – “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the spirit searchest all things, yea, the deep things of God” – (I Cor.2:10). Search the scriptures and the Holy Spirit will help you with His searchlight.

When the prophet Daniel was given the secret of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream by God He said – “Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him” – (Dan.2:20-22). Amen. I believe the Antichrist, the New Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon-USA, will be a dreamer of dreams also.

Searching the scriptures is for the born again saints of God, not for the unsaved. If you’re never been truly saved that resulted in being born again, you need to do it immediately. By faith repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart and you will receive forgiveness and remission of sins. Unless you’re born again you’ll go to hell because you’re not a child of God. You must be born of God – “Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” – (Jn.1:13). “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever” – (I Pet.1:23). “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7). Do not reject God’s love for you in His giving of His beloved Son on the cross as your Savior. Your only alternative is the Lake of Fire for eternity.

Search the Scriptures – they bear witness of Christ.
