The Scarlet Pomegranates and the Golden Bells
“And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about. And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the Lord, and when he cometh out, that he die not” – (Ex.28:33,35).
This sermon is dedicated to sister in the Lord, Courtney Ricker, who wrote us about pomegranates. The pomegranate tree has beautiful scarlet flowers that turn into pomegranate fruits whose seedy pulp inside is blood-red. Pomegranates are in the Bible 31 times, 6 times in the Song of Solomon that speaks of Christ and His bride the church. Carved figures of pomegranates adorned the tops of the pillars in Solomon’s temple and a good juice was made from them also.
But the most important thing was that pomegranates were embroidered on the hem of the high priest’s garment in blue, purple, and scarlet and between each of the pomegranates was a golden bell. The sound of the bells was heard on the Day of Atonement when the high priest entered and returned from making the blood atonement for sins on the altar in the holy place.
God has exalted the pomegranate above all other fruits when God had them embroidered on the high priest’s robe. They stand for the fruit of the Holy Spirit that is produced by the saints who are saved and washed from their sins in the scarlet blood of Christ, our High Priest, who shed His precious blood within the veil and made atonement for us and gives us eternal life. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul” – (Lev.17:11). Again – “…Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” – (Is.1:18). Again – “And the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” – (I Jn.1:7).
The bells typify the sound of the gospel of Christ, our High Priest, who shed His own blood on the cross of Calvary and is sounded throughout the world by His preachers and born again saints. “But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world” – (Rom.10:19). As soon as the blood of Christ has made atonement for your sins, you start producing Holy Spirit fruit as you witness and sound out His gospel of salvation to others. We are His pomegranates and golden bells telling others of salvation and eternal life in Christ – “For from you sounded out the word of the Lord, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad…” – (I Th.1:8).
Every one that is saved by the scarlet blood of Christ on the tree-cross, becomes a good tree bringing forth good Holy Spirit fruit – pomegranates – amen. “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them” – (Mt.7:17-20). It is written – “I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate” – (S.ofSol.8:2). And so Christ our High Priest has made atonement for us with His precious blood – “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us “- (Heb.9:12). Yes, the scarlet pomegranates and the golden bells.
Many people today are drinking pomegranate juice as a health food in order to have a longer life. It’s reported that it is especially good for lowering blood pressure, and that’s probably true and I’ve begun to drink some myself. But it is nothing compared to the eternal life found in Christ our High Priest with the pomegranates dangling from His robe. Eternal life is found in the blood of Christ that saves us from our sins and hell. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” – (Eph.1:7). Again – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16). God sent His beloved Son down to earth to solve man’s greatest problem, sin and the punishment of sin which is death. Both the first death of the body and the second death in the lake of fire. That’s what Easter is all about.
The church of Jesus Christ is not made out of wood and stone, but of saved, sanctifies bodies of flesh and bone. God doesn’t want His church bells ringing out of dead buildings made with hands, but out of the mouths of His spiritual, living church preaching the gospel of Christ to others and sounding out through our tongues.
The pomegranate fruit is reddish and hard on the outside but inside has large seeds floating in a scarlet red pulpy juice. Outwardly it’s not much to look at but God says – “…For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but God looketh on the heart” – (I Sam.16:7). And so it was with Christ, His beauty was inward, not outward. “…he hath no form nor comeliness: and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him” – (Is.53:3). Christ the pomegranate – amen.
Those that are saved by Christ preach the word of God, the gospel ‘seed’ which is the word of God – “The sower soweth the word” – (Mk.4:14). When a person believes, it germinates the seed of God ‘s word in their hearts and they become born again new creatures in Christ. “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever” – (I Pet.1:23). O we need to sound out the precious seed of salvation in Christ so that people can conquer their death and have eternal life in Christ. We need to be golden bells for Christ sounding out the precious pomegranate seeds of the tree of life. “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” – (Jn.11:25). The cross of Christ is a tree of life or a tree of death, depending on whether you’re saved or not.
When we are saved by Christ on the tree cross, we produce Holy Spirit fruit, pomegranates if you will, and we witness for Christ. But we produce other fruit of the Spirit also – “For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth” – (Eph.5:9).
Many people were healed of diseases by Christ after touching the hem of his garment. They attributed a peculiar power or sanctity to the hem of garments. We know that the Jews were directed by God to wear special fringes of blue on the hem of their garments to remind them of God’s commandments and not to sin. “And besought him that they might touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole” – (Mt.14:36). And – “Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments… and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the Lord, and do them…” – (Num.15:38,39). But it is a million times more important for Christ to heal the soul. “I said, Lord, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee” – (Ps.41:4). Again – “…and should be converted, and I should heal them” – (Acts 28:27). The blue fringe on the hem of the garment pointed to sin and the healing of the soul and that’s why the scarlet pomegranates and the golden bells were on the hem of the high priest’s garment on the day of atonement of sin. Yes, the Lord Jesus has been merciful unto man by being the perfect, supreme sacrifice for sin on the cross for forgiveness and cleansing of our sins and the healing of our souls. “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement” – (Rom.5:11).
God gave us a scapegoat, His Son on the cross,
He became sin for the world, His blood was the cost.
The pomegranates stand for healing of sins and eternal life which is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. And that’s the greatest health food of all.
O walking dead man, dead in the trespasses and sins, you can be healed from death and have eternal life in Christ and have the Holy Spirit in you producing holy fruit. You can be saved and born again. Repent of your sins and believe in Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins and be saved from hell and become a new born again creature in Christ having eternal life. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23).
