The Scarlet Thread of Redemption

"And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? This breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez. And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name is called Zarah" - (Gen.38:27-30).

"Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window... and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee. And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head..." - (Jos.2:18,19).

   It was my wife's beautiful needlework that hangs on our wall that inspired this sermon. She used scarlet thread to write 'Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb,' and that's exactly what the scarlet thread through the Bible stands for - redeemed by the scarlet blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world and paying our sin debt. "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool" - (Is.1:18). "...for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation" - (Rev.5:9). The scarlet thread of redemption is seen by the river of blood sacrifices of animals in the Old Testament, which were a type of the perfect, supreme, sinless sacrifice of Christ our redeemer on the cross in the New Testament. The scarlet thread continues to flow today and through the soon second coming of Christ at Armageddon.

   We see the scarlet thread literally in the O.T. tabernacle and temple that was used for all the embroidery and needlework for the curtains and doorways and the veil and the priest's garments etc., that were made of blue and purple and scarlet - (Ex.28:15,39). The scarlet thread of reddemption started in Eden and then Israel and was 'sown' worldwide to all the nations of the world by the preaching of the gospel of Christ starting with Cornelius the Centurion in Caesaria.

   The scarlet thread of redemption is seen clearly with the two Gentile harlots, Tamar and Rahab and the chaste Ruth. And the only way a Gentile can be redeemed is by marrying a Jewish redeemer. And so all of us Gentiles who are saved and redeemed by the Jewish Savior, the Lord Jesus, become the bride of Christ - (Rev.19:7-9). We become one flesh with Christ - "Christ in us, the hope of glory." His Holy Spirit seed in us.

   We also see the scarlet thread of redemption as Moses literally sprinkled the O.T. scriptures and all the people in his dedication of the first testament. "...he took the blood of calves, and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you" - (Heb.9:19,20). I believe he used a scarlet woolen thread mixed in the blood that typified the blood of the Lamb of God, God's dear Son on the cross on the day of Passover.

   In (Gen.38) we find a record of the conception and birth of twin boys named Pharez and Zarah to the Gentile woman Tamar fathered by Judah, the royal tribe that produced King David and then King Jesus. The never to be forgotten manner in which Judah was forced to acknowledge that those children were his offspring, and that the mother was more righteous than he. Tamar was his daughter-in-law whose husband died and was promised to marry Judah's youngest son when he came of age to raise up seed for his brother as a redeemer. The custom of marrying the brother's widow was afterwards made a law of Moses in (Du.25:5) But there was a 'breach of promise' by Judah and he didn't have his son marry Tamar as he promised. Judah and his sons all married Gentile wives.

   As Tamar travailed in birth, the midwife knew she was having twins and as Zarah's hand first breached his mother's womb, the midwife tied a scarlet thread on his hand to show he was the first born. But his brother was born first and the midwife said "How hast thou broken forth? This breach be upon thee." Therefore his name was called Pharez which means 'breach.' God fulfilled the 'breach of promise' of Judah by having Judah himself redeem his daughter-in-law and give her children so his son's seed would not die out in Israel. Zarah's name means 'seed.' Now when we come to the genealogy of the Lord Jesus in (Mt.1) we read - "Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas... and Judas begat Pharez and Zara of Thamar...and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ." It is an amazing thing that the Lord Jesus, according to the flesh, should come through the line of Judah and Tamar, a Jew and 'Gentile woman’, in order for Christ to be the redeemer of both Jew and Gentiles in His Church. That a descendant of Judah and Tamar would shed His precious blood on the cross and be the scarlet thread of redemption to the whole world of both Jew and Gentiles. Jews are .03% of the world's population and the Gentiles are 99.97%. and so we see why God chose Tamar, Rahab and Ruth, three Gentile women, to show us the scarlet thread of redemption through Christ.

   Surely we can see Christ's blood on the cross dripping out of His veins like scarlet threads, and surely we can see the 'scarlet harlot' unsaved, apostate church of today shown to us in (Rev.17) and comprised of millions of unsaved protestants, and one billion unsaved Catholics who commit both physical fornication and spiritual fornication of idolatry. And who will soon worship the Beast and his image and wear the harlot mark in their flesh - 666. (My wife's scarlet DMC crosstitch thread is numbered with 666, the scarlet thread of damnation to all who reject Christ. Scarlet is the color of a harlot; idolatry is her fornication and 666 is her number written in her forehead or right hand. Satan is a red dragon and the Beast is red also.

   The 'breach' was when the high priest of Judah, wearing the blue and purple and scarlet 'holy' garments, conspired with Judas to murder Christ our redeemer on the cross. It was at His religious trial that they slapped Christ's face with their 'hands.' And it was the 'hand' of Judas that dipped with Jesus at the Lord's supper, and it was Judas’s hand that betrayed Him - (Mt.26:23,46). It was they that nailed Christ's bloody, scarlet hands to the tree. Their hand broke Christ on the cross and the breech was upon them. The blood was on their hands against God's redeemer, like Zarah's hand with the scarlet thread. Pilate “ …took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children” (Mt.27:24,25). The Jews, as Zarah, should have received the birthright, as those that came out first with the scarlet thread on their hand. But instead their bloody hands were responsible for murdering the Son of God and their Messiah. And the saved Gentiles, like Pharez, instead received the birthright and the redemption and attained to the righteousness of God by faith in Christ. O the marvelous grace of God in the scarlet thread of redemption in Christ for the whole world and who now sitteth on the 'right hand' of God.

   Rahab the harlot is also an example of the grace of God to sinful Gentiles. Her salvation was not based on her character or merits: she lived in the condemned city of Jericho, and practiced a condemned profession. Nevertheless she acted upon faith, and was saved from death with her family, and they were spared the judgment of God. She had enough faith in the true God to hang a cord of scarlet threads out her window and be saved. The blood-red thread is a type of the blood -red scarlet thread of redemption that runs throughout the Bible, and points directly to Christ the redeemer on the cross shedding His precious blood. "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things... But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was made manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God" - (I Pet.1:18-21).

   The children of Tamar and Judah, like Jacob and Esau, struggled for the birthright, and Pharez obtained it who is ever named first, and from him Christ was descended. And so along with Christ's redemption comes a birth which shows the world that you have the birthright from the heavenly Father. It's a spiritual birth that gives you eternal life as a part of the inheritance and blessing from getting the birthright. Jesus said - "...Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again" - (Jn.3:3,6,7). Again - "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” - (Jn.1:12,13). As our physical birth comes by pain and blood, so our spiritual birth comes by the pain and blood of Christ on the cross - "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit" - (I Pet.3:18).

   It is written of the bride of Christ - "Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely..." - (S. of Sol.4:3). The whole world is cursing Christ today, but His bride, the church, praise His name and say I love you, Lord Jesus for saving my soul. We preach His word as a witness to the world and especially my sermon today as I magnify His name as 'the scarlet thread of redemption' to the whole world. And I will kiss His feet the first chance I get. "Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him" - (Ps.2:12).

   Jesus warned us about chasing after the power and riches of this world so we can be clothed in threads of scarlet like Catholic cardinals and kings. " is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God" - (Mt.19:24). The more worldly a person gets, the harder it is for them to get the scarlet thread of redemption through the needle's eye into heaven. Christ told the chief priest, - "...the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you" - (Mt.21:31). Jesus has redeemed millions of harlots like Tamar and Rahab with the scarlet thread of His blood. The scarlet thread stands for sin, and especially the sin of fornication. Redemption is by the blood of Christ.

   Be redeemed by the blood of the Lamb and become a child of God. Receive the birthright and the blessings. Repent of your sins and believe in Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins and be saved from hell and become a new born again creature in Christ having eternal life - (2 Cor.5:17).

Redeemed  - how I love to proclaim it! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;

Redeemed through His infinite mercy, His child and forever I am.

Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;

Redeemed, redeemed, His child forever I am.

Yes, a redeemed, born again child of God.
