The Resurrection of Christ

“Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again – (Mt.20:18,19).

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of about five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the  apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as one born out of due time” – (I Cor.15:1-8).

“And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain” – (I Cor.15:14).

The Lord Jesus Christ prophesied of His crucifixion, burial and resurrection to His disciples before time. He walked straight toward the cross because He knew He would resurrect three days later. These verses make clear that no one took the life of Jesus from Him against His will. He laid it down Himself and took it up again. “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again” – (Jn.10:17).

Jesus knew what manner of death He would die and all the details. He was to be betrayed by Judas and delivered to the chief priests and scribes and then delivered to the Gentiles (the Romans) to be crucified and resurrect three days later. The resurrection was the silver lining to the dark cloud of crucifixion as the resurrection is to us who are saved and face death. With the precious blood of Christ on the cross we have forgiveness and atonement and remission of sin and with the resurrection on Easter morning, we have the promise of eternal life – because He lives, we shall live also. Jesus said – “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead yet shall he live”- (Jn.11:25). The sinner is dead in trespasses and sins, separated from God. He has his dwelling among the tombs. He first needs to be brought out of this awful place and this occurs when he’s born again. The new birth is a passing from death unto life and becoming a new man, a new creature in Christ. When a person is truly saved the result is being born again. Born again describes what happens to someone that has true salvation in Christ. There are no exceptions.

When we’re born again we’re on resurrection ground. It’s the earnest of our inheritance that we shall resurrect unto eternal life. Jesus is the resurrection to every person but only to the saved saints of God is He everlasting life. He is the resurrection and everlasting death in the lake of fire to all the lost. “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” – (Rev.20:11,15) and (Dan.12:3). Only in Christ is there immortality and eternal life – He is the life. It is the life of a risen and never dying Savior which the born again believer now has as an inalienable and eternal possession.

Jesus said – “The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live” – (Jn.5:25). Only those bodies in the grave that had spiritual ears to hear the gospel and got saved, will hear the resurrection voice of Jesus. Lazarus in the grave, raised to life by the word of Christ, gives us a perfect example of the rapture of God’s dead saints at His second coming – “The dead in Christ shall rise first.” If you’re only born once, you’ll die twice – if you’re born twice, you’ll only die once. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death” – (Rev.20:14).

Preachers and teachers should preach and teach about the crucifixion of Christ and His precious blood shed on the cross. It should be the theme of our message in a sin-cursed world, but we must not stop there. Christ rose from the dead and without His resurrection our faith is vain. If we have no resurrection and eternal life then we have not conquered death which is the penalty of sin. “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23). Christ must not just die on the cross for our sins but he must resurrect from death as proof of eternal life to the world. Every Easter, God shouts out to the world – “My Son is the resurrection and the life and if you go to the cross and repent of your sins and believe on Him, then you will have eternal life.” Christ is the first fruits of the resurrection harvest, but Praise the Lord Jesus, we’re a part of the harvest also. O the hope that Christ’s resurrection give to a hopeless dying world.

In Christ we conquer the first death and also the second death in the lake of fire – “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore. Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death” – (Rev.1:18). Jesus is the key man on planet earth. He has the most important keys of all – the keys of hell and earth. He only has life, everlasting life and He only has power over both deaths – the death of the body and the eternal life of the soul. God, the Judge of the universe, is not a merciless judge showing us no mercy and only judgment. He has shown to us plainly His love and mercy and grace sending His beloved Son to be the Savior of the world. “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” – (I Jn.4:9). Do not spurn the love of God and forgiveness of sins and eternal life in Christ. Do not trample under foot the precious blood of Christ or the wrath of God still abideth on you – “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believe not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” – (Jn.3:36). You must go to the cross and be saved and crucify the old man and be born again before you can resurrect from the grave unto eternal life.

The great argument to prove Christ is the Son of God is the resurrection – He proved to be God when He raised from the dead. Of all the witnesses that seen and heard Christ after His resurrection, the best one is Doubting Thomas, one of the twelve disciples. “Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, my Lord and My God” – (Jn.21:27,28). Believing in your heart in the resurrection of Christ is a requirement of salvation, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” – (Rom.10:9).  Are you saved and become a new born again creature in Christ? Have you died with Christ on the cross and risen from the dead?

God has shown us plainly in the Old Testament of the resurrection of Christ in (Ps.16:10) that is quoted by both Peter and Paul. “Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ…” – (Acts 2:27,31) – See also (Acts 13:34,35). We are saved from our sins and hell and resurrected unto eternal life – PTL Jesus. We are crucified with Christ and born again to newness of life. When we’re saved we experience death and resurrection with Christ.

But there is also another place in the Bible showing the resurrection through the prayers of God’s two prophets, Elijah and Elisha. Through Elijah, God resurrected a woman’s son – (I Kings 17:21,22). And we read about God resurrecting the Shunemite woman’s son through Elisha in (2 Kings 4). First there was a miracle birth of the son and then this son died with a ‘head’ sickness and Elisha prayed and God resurrected the son and the boy sneezed seven times. This was a beautiful type of the Lord Jesus who had a miracle virgin birth and died on the cross in ‘the head’ place, the place of the skull, and resurrected three days later – (2 Kings 4:8-37). “He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord. And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child… and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes” – (2 Kings – 4:33-35). Even Elisha’s bones had resurrection power and gave life to another body – (2 Kings 13:20-22). Proof of God’s resurrection.

The boy received the ‘resurrection sneeze’ and the breath of life from God that God gave to Adam – “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” – (Gen.2:7). When God breathed in Adam’s nose, Adam may have sneezed. Through His prophet Elisha’s mouth, God gave the breath of resurrection life to the boy. This is where we get the usage of paying respect when people sneeze by saying, “God bless you.” When we’re saved and born again through God’s beloved Son, we receive new life and God blesses us through Christ. “And when he had said this, he breathed on them and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost” – (Jn.20:22). Jesus is the breath of resurrection life. He’s teaching us that the only possible way for the natural man to become a new creature in Christ is through the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit. “Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:7). If you won’t believe that God created Adam and gave life to him, neither will you believe in the resurrection of Christ.

Have you been truly saved and born again of the Holy Spirit? Being born again is the result of true salvation in Christ. Born again describes what happens when you’re truly saved. Repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart and receive forgiveness and remission of sins and you will become a new creature in Christ. One day you will receive a brand new incorruptible body that shall never die or even sin. Jesus is the resurrection sneeze – He is the breath of resurrection life.

He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today!

He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.

He lives, he lives, salvation to impart!

You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.

Believe on the resurrection of Christ and raise from the dead.
