Psalm 110

Christ Our Melchizedek Makes His Enemies His Footstool At Armageddon

This is a very important Psalm. It is quoted or referred to with great significance seven times in the New Testament especially (verse 1). It is important to me personally because I was born again kneeling over a “footstool” in a house on March 17, 1972. I who was an enemy of God because of my sins made peace with God through the blood of God’s son – (Eph.2:13-16). The footstool of God’s wrath was made the footstool of my salvation and a symbol of the grace and mercy of God to me. Each of the seven verses in this psalm is a direct reference to the second coming of Christ at the battle of Armageddon when his enemies will be conquered and made his footstool and brought into subjection to him. He’s coming as an emperor on a white horse leading his army of saints dressed with the white uniform of righteousness – making war in righteousness.

Verse One

“The Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” This verse is remarkable because it sets forth the deity of Christ – Jesus Christ is Lord. It is quoted in (Mt.22:44 – Acts 2:34,35 – Heb.1:13, 10:13 – Mk.12:36 – Lk.20:43). In (Acts 2) at the end of his Pentecostal sermon, Peter drove home the damning charge that the Jews had murdered their Messiah by quoting this verse. It brought about conviction and repentance and remission of sins through Christ and thousands were saved. In (Heb.1) it made the point that Christ is far superior to angels and to clinch the argument this verse is used – “To which of the angels said he at anytime, sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”

In (Mt.22) the enemies of Christ were trying to trap him with his words by saying something incriminating. The Herodians, Sadducees and the Pharisees came against him with their best questions and were put to silence by the wisdom of the Lord Jesus. Then Jesus asked them a question – “What think ye of Christ? Whose son is he? They say unto him, the son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, the Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? And no man was able to answer him  a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions” – (Mt.22:42-46). Since David called him Lord in this Psalm, how can he be his son? Not by natural birth but by a supernatural birth. The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of David, Israel’s Messiah, was virgin born. He was the son of David, according to the flesh, through the woman Mary, but God was his Father being conceived by the Holy Ghost. Hence, the son of David is David’s Lord. This same Lord Jesus will make his enemies his footstool at Armageddon.

Verse Two

“The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.” The rod is a rod of iron, the scepter of Christ when he comes back at Armageddon as King of Kings to rule from Mt. Zion in Jerusalem as emperor over planet earth. “And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine line, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords,” Isaiah prophesied also of this time – “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow into it. And many people shall go and say, come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord form Jerusalem” – (Is.2:2,3). Jerusalem will be the capital of earth. Mt. Zion is a separate and distinct mountain from Mt. Moriah and the temple mount and it’s very possible that the millennial temple will be built on Mt. Zion and not Mt. Moriah. It will be the mountain of the Lord Jesus’ house.

Verse Three

“The people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.” The scene again is the last great battle before the millennium – Armageddon where the enemies of the Lord are gathered together to prevent his second coming in great power and shall be made his footstool – “Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the blessed? And Jesus said, I am and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven” – (Mk.14:61,62). And we his saints willingly become his army in this day of his power. Nobody has more beauties of holiness than Christ. One of his titles is “The Holy One.” Then the whole earth will be – “Holiness unto the Lord” – (Zach. – 14:20). We are partakers of his holiness when we’re born again of the Holy Ghost.

Jesus Christ is Lord – he has begotten the morning and the dew. “Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew? Out of whose womb came the ice…” – (Job 38:8,9). It is written of Christ – “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made” – (Jn.1:3). The dew of thy youth is the symbol of the blessings of God especially in war – “Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth…” (Gen.27:28). And again – “And of Joseph he said, blessed of the Lord be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath” – (Du.33:13). Again – “And the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life forever more” – (Ps.133:3). Dew of thy youth is the blessing of everlasting life which comes only through Jesus Christ. As Melchizedek blessed Abraham, so Jesus Christ blesses the world as our king-priest. Christ will save Israel at Armageddon as Gideon did with the symbol of the dew upon the fleece.

Verse Four

The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” This verse struck at the very roots of the Old Testament sacrificial system under the High Priest Aaron. David’s son, the Lord, would not only be a king but a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. The Lord Jesus was not only the perfect, supreme one time sacrifice on Calvary, but he’s also the priest who offers the sacrifice. This is developed in the book of Hebrews because it is one of the greatest truths found in God’s word. The day Christ died, God the father reached down and rent the temple veil in the Holy of Holies and this was the beginning of the end of the Old Testament priestcraft.

There was now a new priest, one of David’s royal line, who lives forever and has an unchangeable priesthood. Melchizedek was a king-priest – both political and religious power – which was forbidden under mosaic law. He was something Aaron’s sons could never be, a king. He was something David’s sons could never be, a priest. Sinful man can not be entrusted with so much power. Only when Jesus – Melchizedek comes will all power be concentrated in the same hands – all political power – all religious power in a righteous manner. This combined power of the king and priest in one man is also seen in (Zach.6:11-15) when the high priest Joshua is symbolically crowned king.

Melchizedek is seen the first time in (Gen.14:18) when Abraham was returning from the first war in the bible - the slaughter of the kings. And Melchizedek met Abraham and they celebrated the Lord’s supper together – bread and wine“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.” How perfectly this points to the body and blood of Christ sacrificed on the cross and the memorial Lord’s supper that we keep in remembrance of him. The Lord Jesus will come back at the final war before the millennium and destroy the Beast (the pseudo-emperor and pseudo-Christ) and his ten kings – (Rev.19). He will come back like Melchizedek with all power – both political and religious power over the whole earth. This is the real ‘slaughter of the kings’ of which (Gen.14) is but a type of.

Verse Five and Six

“The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath: He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies: he shall wound the head over many countries.” The armies of the world united against Christ’s second coming shall be made his footstool. The eagles of prey shall feed upon the armies of Antichrist and his kings. Then the Lord Jesus will judge between the sheep and the goats – the sheep will inherit the kingdom and the goats will be thrown in hell – (Mt.25:31-46) and (Rev.19:11-21).

Verse Seven

“He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.” The Lord Jesus said on the cross – “I thirst” so that we could drink from the water of eternal life – “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst ; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” – (Jn.4:14). We are reminded of the three hundred warriors of Gideon who lapped the water and then won a great battle with no weapons. And the remnant of this world that get saved will be a part of Christ’s army at his coming and we shall win the battle with no carnal weapons. Our king wins the battle for us with the words of his mouth. Only the ones who lap up the words of Christ will get saved.

What a glorious future awaits the born again saints of God. Are you a saint or are you an aint? Have you been saved by the Lord Jesus by repenting of your sins and by faith believing on him in your heart for remission of sins? Receive God’s perfect, supreme sacrifice on the cross for your sins, his dearly beloved son. Do not spurn the grace and love of God by rejecting Jesus Christ or hell will be your eternal destiny. You can have eternal life through Christ – “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” – (I Jn.5:11,12). If you get saved you will come back with Christ our Melchizedek when he makes his enemies his footstool at Armageddon. Make peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ and be no longer his enemy and rule and reign with him over this earth.
