Psalm 2

The 2nd Psalm is very profound. It covers history from the time of David the King to the first advent of Jesus Christ to be crucified for the sins of the world, and also to the second coming in power and great glory to set up his 1000 year reign on earth.

Verse 1 - “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?” First of all who are the heathen? In David’s time until the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection, anyone who was not a Jew was considered as heathen. Even the Samaritans who were half Jews were despised by Jews as heathen. John 4:9 “Then answered the woman of Samaria unto him, how is it that thou being a Jew asketh drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.” But, since Jesus was rejected by the Jewish rulers, and crucified and risen after 3 days, anyone who rejects the finished blood sacrifice and free salvation offered by him, including Jews, is considered to be heathen. These heathen who have rejected Jesus are indeed raging in anger against anyone who would dare preach against their sin and who would preach the truth. They hate the light of truth because their deeds are evil. The world systems today both secular and religious are calling Jesus a liar. John 14:6 says “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me.” The Pope, the Roman Church, the Protestant churches and even some Baptist churches are rapidly coming into the fold of the evil ecumenical movement which proclaims that all religions are OKAY. They have certainly imagined a vain thing. They have rejected the Word of God which says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

Verses 2 & 3 - “The Kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.” The kings of the earth, presidents, prime ministers, Tsars, Caliphs, Emirs, Emperors, all heads of state what ever their titles might be, have down through the ages, with some few exceptions have hated the restrictions placed on them by God’s law. Lest you begin to get the idea that I am anti-government, I quote Romans 13:1b “For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” The powers that be: Even the evil ones such as King Herod in Jesus’ time, persecuted and put to death Christians, Religious Rome who continued to kill over 150 million true believers, Hitler, Stalin, Presidents Clinton and Bush. Whether or not you like them, God gave them to rule over us. In Jesus’ time they took counsel together and plotted to kill their Messiah. Today as it was then, the religious leaders are calling Jesus a liar and if he came to earth again as a lamb to the slaughter they would gladly crucify him again. They have said they don’t need Jesus. They are going to bring about their utopian world peace without Jesus Christ! “Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.” “We will not have this man to rule over us.” Meaning of course, Jesus. When Jesus was before Pilate, Pilate said “behold your king” they said, “We have no king but Caesar.” So now the powers that be are saying let’s get rid of God’s law, (The Ten Commandments). We will establish our own laws, our own “New World Order” and not be bound by God’s laws. We will establish our own righteousness and create our own paradise without God.

Verse 4 -He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.” God laughs with a laugh of scorn and derision at man’s puny efforts to rule himself with out seeking God’s wisdom. Let’s look at what happened in Genesis 11:1-8. God had commanded Noah in Gen.9:16 -  be fruitful, and multiply and replenish the earth.” But in Gen. 11 they disobeyed and stayed in one place and tried to build a tower to heaven instead of doing as God commanded. So God came down, confused their languages and they were scattered all over the world. These people were highly intelligent and very capable, much as the people today with our high tech electronics which we think will enable us to do anything we want. Even maybe through science (so called) provide us with life eternal without God.

Verse 5 - “Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath and vex them in his sore displeasure.” This verse is prophetic of God’s judgment on a Christ-rejecting world and this judgment is spelled out in detail in the book of Revelation and I believe personally that the “day of the Lord” will be soon upon them that are asleep in their sin.

Verse 6 - “Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.” The “I” refers to God the father who will set “his” king, the Lord Jesus Christ upon Mount Moriah, the holy place where Abraham was to offer up Isaac in obedience to God’s command. This holy place is none other than the temple mount where the Arabs have constructed their mosque in defiance of God. But God will certainly remove it and construct the temple of Ezekiel, chapters 40-43, and Jesus, the king will rule from there for 1000 years.

Verse 7 - “I will declare the decree: The Lord hath said unto me, thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:18- He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” Jesus is God’s only begotten Son. God created Adam, the angels, the cherubim and Satan who was Lucifer the light angel. The bible refers to them as sons of God. John 1:12 says “But as many as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” So there are many sons of God, but only one begotten Son.

Verse 8 - “Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.” Wow! Amen! God has given to Jesus us gentiles for his inheritance. Praise the Lord! When the Jews rejected Jesus and crucified him, the door was opened for us gentiles to believe on Jesus and be saved. We were the heathen. John 10:15 & 16 “As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold and one shepherd.” Allelujah! We are the other sheep. Acts 18:6, Paul preaching to the Jews, “And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his rainment, and said, unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the gentiles.” Amen! The gentiles are us.

Verse 9 - “Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron: thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Thou is speaking of Jesus. Revelation 2:27 “And he shall rule over them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.” Notice how the old and new testaments compliment each other. Rev.19:15 “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of  the fierceness and wrath of almighty God.” The rule of Jesus the King for 1000 years shall be very harsh to those who disobey and step out of line. They will feel the correction of his rod of iron.

Verses 10 & 11 - “Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.” I believe this is a warning and a command to all rulers and judges and all men of authority to serve the Lord with awesome respect for his almighty power, and in serving with a righteous heart they will be joyful, trembling and thankful for his gracious warning.

Verse 12 - “Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.” Kiss the Son. Reject him no more; believe on the Son’s sacrifice and his shed precious blood as full payment for all the sins of the world. Receive the free gift that is offered. Trust in his finished work, and receive God’s blessing. The alternative is the wrath of God. AMEN!
