Portrait of Gabriel
"And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision" - (Dan.8:16).
"Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly.. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding" - (Dan.9:21,22).
"And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth. To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David: and the virgin's name was Mary" - (Lk.1:26,27).
"And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show these glad tidings" - (Lk.1:19).
During Christmas this year I want to preach a word portrait of the angel Gabriel. I read yesterday in the Phoenix newspaper about a false prophet named Gabriel, who is the leader of 100 people on a ranch in Tubac, Az., 50 miles south of Tucson. O the spiritual darkness of unsaved people who reject the light of Christ.
There are millions of angels - "Ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands" - (Rev.5:11). But only three angels are named in the bible: Michael the archangel, Gabriel , and the fallen angel Lucifer, now called Satan.
Gabriel appeared twice to Daniel in the O.T. and was called "the man Gabriel", because he appeared in human form. God sent Gabriel to give understanding to Daniel concerning the two prophecies about the Antichrist and the Great Tribulation and the second coming of Christ. Gabriel was also sent twice in the N.T. with prophecies concerning the first coming of Christ and His forerunner John the Baptist, who would prepare the way for Christ. So Gabriel was sent to earth by God and specially named, to give us specific truth concerning the two comings to earth of God’s beloved Son the Lord Jesus Christ. The angel Gabriel was a very special envoy from the throne of God with very special prophecy concerning the most important person in the Bible, the Son of God. And for this special person, God names this special angel. What a great honor it was for the angel Gabriel to prophesy of Gods' beloved Son.
God sent Gabriel the first time in (Dan.8) to give understanding to Daniel concerning the ram and the goat prophecy, and especially about the Antichrist called "the little horn”. Gabriel is sent the second time to Daniel in (Dan.9) to give him and us understanding concerning the prophecy of the “seventy weeks”. This prophecy includes the first coming of Christ on the cross as Savior who makes reconciliation to God for our sins, and the last week of seven years of the Great Tribulation and the Antichrist and the second coming of Christ at Armageddon. Both of these prophesies are very important to us saints today who are living in these end times at the end of the day of grace, just prior to the revealing of Antichrist and the day of God’s wrath.
God sent Gabriel to earth the third time to Zecharias the priest in the temple. Zecharias and his wife Elizabeth were old and had no children, like Abraham and Sarah, and Gabriel told Zecharias that his wife would bear a son, and that he was to name him "John.”. And that his son would be a prophet like Elijah, with the same Spirit and power, to prepare the way of the Lord Jesus. He was to be named John because it is a very common Gentile name, and God was beginning His N.T. Church comprised not only of Jews, but of the Gentiles also. John had a miracle birth, and Jesus had a much greater miracle birth, born of a virgin with God as His Father. So that we who are saved by Christ can have also a new miracle birth, being born again of the Holy Spirit.
Six months later, Gabriel was sent to Nazareth in Galilee of the Gentiles (Is.9:1 - Mt.4:15) to the virgin Mary who told her that she would be the mother of the Son of God, and that His name should be called “Jesus”, a Gentile name that means 'Savior.' Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world to both Jews and Gentiles, and that's why he grew up in Galilee of the Gentiles and had a Gentile name and not a Jewish name. That's why Cephas is changed to Peter and Saul to Paul and names like James and John, and Mark and Andrew and Matthew and Stephen etc. These two appearances of Gabriel in the N.T. were very important, and so God sent a very special angel to do it perfectly as he was commanded. Gabriel was an ambassador of the King of heaven sent to earth with two special messages concerning two special miracle births of the Lord Jesus and His prophet who went before him to prepare His way and announce Him.
Man today is sending vehicles into outer space and sending electronic messages into the heavens, trying to find other living creatures, and very ignorantly ignores God's written word to man that tells us about God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, and angels that have come to earth to visit us. "Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart" - (Eph.4:18). Sinful man is the alien of God and angels because he is born of the earth, and earthly. He needs to be born again with the Holy Spirit and have a heavenly birth and become the friend of God, instead of the enemy of God. And that's why God sent His beloved Son down to earth to be our only mediator to make peace between a holy God and sinful man. Sinful man is the enemy and alien in God's universe.
The N.T. begins with two miracle births on planet earth heralded by God's special envoy to earth, the angel Gabriel. It shows us that man also needs a miracle birth in order to take part in God's universe and have eternal life. Jesus said - "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh: and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again" - (Jn.3:3,6,7). The God who gave a miracle birth to John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus, can most certainly give one to you.
Born again describes what happens to you when you're truly saved by Christ. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" - (2 Cor.5:17). Repent of your sins and believe in Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins, and be saved from hell and become a new born again creature in Christ having eternal life. "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his son" - (I Jn.5:11).
