God’s Plumbline

“Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet – (Is.28:16,17).

“Thus he shewed me: and , behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seeth thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword” – (Amos 7:7-9).

A plumbline is a line with a weight (plumb bob) on the end and it is used to determine if a building is true vertical to the earth or crooked. We find the plumbline or plummet in several places in the Bible and when you see this it means that God is getting ready to judge in righteousness. You can be sure the people have not measured up to God’s requirements and judgment is coming soon. The measurement that God is most concerned with is not length and width and height but that the vertical measurement is true and straight. God is concerned with the vertical, the straight up and down measurement between God and man. If a man is not saved and straight with God, he can never be straight and true with man. First the vertical with God and then the horizontal with man. The picture we get with God having a plumbline in His hand is that He is measuring people according to His righteousness to see if you are straight or crooked, saint or a sinner. He is examining people minutely and critically to see if they were plumb or out of plumb. “Judgment will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet.” Righteousness is the line and judgment the plummet and if you don’t get saved, you will plummet straight down into Hell. “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” – (Rev.20:15).

God the Father says about His beloved Son – “Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation.” Christ is the cornerstone of God’s spiritual temple, the church. He is the head of the church, the head of the corner. Jesus Christ is a foundation of God’s laying. He is God’s measurement of man. He is sinless and without blemish, perfectly straight and true - a perfect plummet between God and man and by whom everyone on earth is measured. He shall distinguish between true and counterfeit and between straight and crooked. He is the cornerstone in whom the temple of God is united. He is the foundation of His church and He is building up the rest of His building with His blood-bought saints. He is raising the structure, as builders do, by line and plummet, correcting us and bringing us back into true line when we get ‘off plumb.’ And Christ is the perfect man by whom the whole world will be measured and judged.

Peter, the second stone in the church after Christ, said – “To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood… Wherefore also it is contained in the scriptures, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto to them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner. And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the Word, being disobedient” – (I Pet.2:4-8). Each born again saint of God is a living stone in the living temple of God not made with hands.

Each person on earth is born crooked and he must be born again of God’s Holy Spirit through Christ and made straight. God lays His plumbline on us and straightens us out – amen. He sent John the Baptist preaching and preparing the way before Him – He prepared the way of the Lord Jesus – make your paths straight through Christ – “And the crooked shall be made straight” – (Lk.3:5). Each person on earth can be saved by Christ and go straight, but precious few want the straight and narrow way – the vertical straight way to heaven. “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide in the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because straight is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” – (Mt.7:13,14). We are told to – “Make straight paths for your feet” – (Heb.12:13).

Hear God’s plummet judgment on Israel – “Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle. And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down” – (2 Kings 21:12,13). God is saying I have measured Israel whether they were true vertical to me and I have found them evil and now judgment will come upon them. God is going to do some dishwashing. Israel is filthy, so God is going to wipe them out of the land. Every now and then God washed His dishes. Nations down through the centuries lie along the highway of time in rubble and ruin. The U.S. is such a filthy place today. We are way off plumb and God is going to wash U.S. away soon. God is laying our judgment to the line and our righteousness to the plummet – He is measuring us to see how we line up to Christ and how straight we are. And I’m afraid the U.S is crooked and leaning sideways like the leaning tower of Pisa and about to fall. Judgment is coming soon.

It is written in (Zach.4:10) “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands also shall finish it… For who hath despised small things? For they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” We don’t see Zerubbabel with a trowel in his hand laying the stones in the rebuilt temple and wall in Jerusalem. But we see him with the plummet so he can make sure it’s going up straight and true. Israel had just spent 70 years in captivity in Babylon because God’s judgment fell upon them because of their wicked ways. The temple and wall was razed to the ground. But now a remnant had returned to Jerusalem to rebuild it and it must be built in righteousness, not wickedness, straight and true and Godly.

And Israel today is in the same predicament as the Jews were in Ezra’s and Nehemiah’s day. They have returned back to Israel after being disbursed by God among the Gentiles for 2000 years. In 1948 Israel became a nation again and there is talk of building their temple on Mt. Moriah, the temple mount. The temple will be built soon. But it will not be of God. It will be the temple of Antichrist which he desecrates with his image called the “Abomination of Desolation.” And so we read in (Rev.l1:1,2) – “And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.” Notice that the worshippers in the temple will be measured, not just the building.

This is God’s plumbline again measuring with the line of His righteousness which is Christ and judging with His plummet. The Jews have still not believed on Christ, the cornerstone of God’s spiritual temple. They are disobedient and reject God’s precious Cornerstone laid by God in Zion. And so Christ the Stone becomes a stumbling stone and a rock of offense because they stumble at the Word of God which is Christ. They reject God’s perfect sacrifice of Christ on the cross and go backward and build their temple and start the temple sacrifices, which is abomination to God. The temple is Antichrist – it is against everything that Christ has done on the cross.

At this time of measurement of the temple God sends two witnesses to preach to the world of Gentiles and to the Jews. They show plainly the righteousness of God in Christ. “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth” _ (Rom.10:4). As the Jews measure the temple in length and width, God uses his two witnesses with the Bible in their hands to measure them vertically according to God’s righteous plumbline. They are measured and found wanting and God’s judgment falls upon them.

Jesus is our standard. He is the Divine Plumbline. He held up the plumbline to people around Him when He preached the gospel. God’s plumbline became flesh and came to seek and save the lost. We are all sinners failing to measure up to God’s plumbline and thus in need of salvation. When you’re saved by Christ and have the righteousness of Christ, then you’re plumb straight with God. You’re one of the crooked sinners made straight by Christ. He saves you and puts you on the straight and narrow way to eternal life. You cannot straighten out your life by yourself and your own good works. You need Christ to straighten out your life not yourself and your own good works. You need to be saved and be born again.

Repent of your sins and believe on Jesus Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of your sins. You will become a new born again creature in Christ with the Holy spirit in you – a new man – a Godly man. He will make your crooked, sinful ways straight. Paul was our example of a wicked man who was saved and made straight on the street named “Straight” in Damascus. You can have eternal life in Christ and escape the eternal second death in the lake of fire. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” – (I Jn.5:11,12). God loves you and sent His beloved Son to save you – “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might give through him” – (I Jn.4:9).

Be pardoned from your eternal death sentence, the second death in the lake of fire because you sinned and broke God’s righteous laws. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23).

Be saved and made straight by Christ.
