The Serpent and the Bottomless Pit of Hell
“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season” – (Rev.20:1-3).
serpents are easy to recognize in the
When God created the serpent He foreknew that he would be the symbol of Satan and he designed him accordingly. We can learn much spiritual truth about Satan by meditating on the serpent’s make-up. In this sermon I’m zeroing in on the serpent’s pit. God placed the pits on the pit viper just below his eyes so that as he crawls on his belly in the dirt he will always see his pits and symbolize Satan’s punishment in the bottomless pit of hell. The serpent will be cast into the bottomless pit by God’s angel during the 1000 year rule and reign of Emperor Jesus on this earth. During the Serpent’s confinement in the bottomless pit prison, he will be bound with a chain and he will be unable to deceive anyone on the earth.
We are given more information on the bottomless pit in (Rev.9) - “And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit” – (Rev.9:2). Where there is smoke, there’s fire and we can certainly see the serpent’s heat sensing pits. During the great tribulation, evil spirits are released from the bottomless pit by God to torment men for five months by stinging them with poisonous scorpion tails. Evil spirits are incarcerated there awaiting their final judgment. It’s an ancient penitentiary for evil spirits, or at least for those of them who are so vile that God keeps them ‘reserved in chains’ – (2 Pet.2:4). This is where Satan himself will be chained throughout the 1000 year millennium. It is from this same terrible pit that the soul of the Beast will be summoned when, after his assassination, he re-emerges as the world’s last emperor before King Jesus comes – (Rev.17:8). I believe this pit is a great chimney like a volcano vent that leads to hell and when it’s opened, smoke comes out from the furnace of hell. And so Jesus said – “So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just. And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth” – (Mt.13:49,50). All unsaved people will spend eternity in hell with the Devil and his evil spirits because they spurned salvation in God’s beloved Son. Yes – the Serpent and the bottomless pit of hell.
Picture what the world would be like if we were to open the doors of all the prisons of earth and set free the world’s most vicious and violent criminals for five months, giving them full reign to practice their wickedness upon people. Something worse than this lies in store for the world in (Rev.9). Satan, cast out of heaven, is now given permission by God to summon his most diabolical evil spirits in the bottomless pit prison to torment mankind who have received the mark of the beast. It is God’s judgment upon a wicked world that rejects God’s grace in His beloved Son on the cross and refuse to turn away from their wicked ways and worship Antichrist instead. It’s the pits- amen. And God wants the word pit in his Bible and not abyss in order to match up with the pit viper and the rest of the Bible. O’ do not change the inerrant Word of God or you will lose God’s truth preserved in the KJV.
It is written of Lucifer, the angelic name of Satan, in (Is.14:13-15) “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most high. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” And so God abases the proud Serpent to the bottomless pit of hell for 1000 years while Christ reigns as Emperor over planet earth. Yes, the Serpent, that old pit viper, will be incarcerated in the bottomless prison pit for a millennium as part of his sentence by a holy and righteous God. “And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited” – (Is.24:21,22). The evil fallen angels in the bottomless pit prison – amen.
Over and over the Bible tells us about the pit of hell. (Job 17:16) says – “They shall go down to the bars of the pit..” and again in (Job33:24,28). “Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, deliver him from going down into the pit: I have found a ransom. He will deliver his soul from going into the pit.” Jesus Christ “Who gave himself a ransom for all” – (2 Tim.2:6) and “Who delivered us from so great a death…” – (2 Cor.1:10) and “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness” – (Col.1:13) and “Which delivered us from the wrath to come – (I Thes.1:10) is the only one that can save us from the pit of hell. Are you saved today?
It is written in (Eccl.10:8) “He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.” If you think that you can get by with sin, you’re very foolish. God may not act immediately, but eventually God will judge you for it. The serpent will be thrown into the pit of hell along with every unsaved sinner. When you sin, you are in effect, digging your own pit in hell. When the Lord Jesus saves you then you can say – “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit” – (Ps.40:2) – you are saved from hell.
It’s called “The pit of destruction” in (Ps.55:23) and the “Pit of corruption” – in (Is.38:17,18). God says to Tyrus in (Ezk.26:20) “When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit …” And again in (Ezk.35:14). “For they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.” The Serpent (Pit viper) and the bottomless pit of hell.
The serpent carries the symbol of the pit of hell just below his eyes as a reminder of Satan and of where he and his angels are going. Jesus Christ will save you from hell and give you eternal life in heaven. I see the rattle on the rattlesnake pit viper as a warning to man to be saved by the Lord Jesus before it’s too late. Turn away from your wicked ways – repent of your sins and turn by faith to God’s beloved Son on the cross. “Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” – (Col.1:28). I’m blowing the trumpet of warning as God’s Bible Watchman, do not spurn the love and grace of the Father in His beloved Son. “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live through him” – (I Jn.4:14,9). I plead with you, do not spend eternity in the lake of fire with the Serpent and his evil spirits. Do not go into the snake pit of hell. Take heed to the warning of the serpent’s rattle. It’s the warning rattle of the second death in the lake of fire.
