Passed Away

“He went away again the second time: and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it; thy will be done” – (Mt.26:42).

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life – (Jn.5:24).

“But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away – (Jam.1:10).

Notice the words ‘passed away.’ It’s used by people who don’t want to say the dreaded word death, yet it is a Bible term for death. One definition of pass away is (to go out of existence – to die). Sometimes people say ‘passed’ or ‘passed on’ or ‘passage.’

But Webster is wrong about his definition – because nobody goes out of existence – for the soul never dies. He’ll either die forever in the lake of fire, which is the second death or he’ll have everlasting life in Heaven. But every-body, not the soul, but every-body, shall pass away or die. The body shall die, except at the rapture when God’s saints are translated and changed and taken up before the great tribulation. But every-body shall pass away – “For it is appointed unto man once to die….” And we die because it’s God’s judgment on sinners who break His laws. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned” – (Rom.5:12).

We see all this in my text verse – (Mt.26:42). This is the prayer of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane the night before the cross. The cup represents His blood shed on the cross to save sinners. The blood of His cup washes a repentant, believing sinner from his sins. Notice ‘pass away’ connected with His death. This is the core of the phrase ‘pass away.’ This is the death of all deaths, the death of God’s Son, the Savior of the world. “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor: that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man” – (Heb.2:9). Jesus Christ passed away, He tasted death for every man so that believers could get victory over death and the grave and our passed away body could be resurrected unto eternal life, like His was. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23).

How glad we should be that Jesus never let His cup of blood on Calvary’s tree ‘pass away’ from Him, but that He passed away and died for my sins so that I could have eternal life. Now I can pass away with a certain hope in my heart. I’ve been born again, saved – a saint of God. I have victory over my death. As Jesus passed away, but resurrected three days later, I will also. It shall come to pass – amen.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17). When we’re born again and become a new creature in Christ, we have already ‘passed away’ spiritually, we’ve already experienced death. For you cannot be born again except you die with Christ on the cross – “I am crucified with Christ” – (Gal.2:20). Immediately when you’re born again, you pass from death unto life. “We know that we have passed from death unto life” – (I Jn.3:14). Do you know that? Have you passed away from death unto life by being born again?

Passing away is not just dying, but also moving or passing to another place. We just pass away to Heaven or hell. Do you ‘know’ that you have passed from death unto life? Do you know for certain that you’ve been born again? If you’re not, you’ll pass away from death unto death. From the death of the body to eternal death in hell. Most people are on the broad way to hell. Be one of the few on the narrow way to heaven.

Remember my text verse in (Jn.5:24). This has been a great favorite with the body of Christ. It speaks of eternal life as a present possession – “hath everlasting life,” not shall have when we die, or when the resurrection morning comes. You must hear God’s Word and believe on Christ in order to have eternal life – to pass from death unto life. “And shall not come into condemnation”- this guarantees the future. No condemnation because our sins are forgiven in Christ, we are accounted righteous with God.

All shall die and pass away, the rich and the poor, and no amount of money spent by the rich and powerful for his funeral will change the destination of his passage. “I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away…” – (Ps.37:35,36). Again – “For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told” – (Ps.90:9). We pass away from life one day at a time until finally we die and pass away into eternity. “Man is like to vanity: his days are as shadow that passeth away – (Ps.144:4).

Every single living thing on this earth passes away – everything dies. And this Planet Earth will pass away along with our immediate Heaven. “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away” – (Mt.24:38). The only living thing on this earth that shall never pass away is the Word of God. “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever” – (I Pet.1:23). God shall make a new heavens and earth – (2 Pet.3:13).

Yesterday, March 17, 2007, I was 35 years old in Christ. I was born again on March 17, 1972. I passed away – I died on March 17, 1972. I passed from death unto life. The old Mike Storti died and passed away when I repented of my sins and believed on Christ while kneeling over a footstool in a friend’s house. And a brand new creature in Christ arose. The cigars and alcohol ‘passed away.’ The filthy language and blasphemy of Christ ‘passed away’ and now I praise the Lord for saving me. My old friends ‘passed away’ and I got new Christian friends. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin” – (Rom.6:6,7). Again – “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness” – (Eph.4:22,24).

I passed away unto eternal life and all the saints of God are invited to my billionth birthday party. One day on March 17, I’ll be a billion years old. My fleshly birthday one day will cease, but my spiritual birthday goes on forever. I don’t celebrate my fleshly  birth any longer, but I celebrate my second birth on March 17. Yes, I passed away from death unto life. I have immortality, eternal life in Christ. And one day soon I will receive a new immortal body from Christ.

I soon will die and go the way of every generation – “One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh” – (Eccl.1:4). Our lives pass away swiftly – “Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good. They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey” – (Job.9:25,26)

Praise the Lord for the Lord Jesus Christ and God’s mercy and grace in His beloved Son. Through Christ we can conquer death and have eternal life. We can be a true winner in life. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but it passed from death unto life – (Jn.5:24). If you don’t get born again and pass from death unto life, then you will pass from death unto death – the second death in the lake of fire – “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” – (Rev.20:14,15).

Don’t pass away without being born again by Christ. Repent of your sins and by faith believe on the Lord Jesus in your heart and you will receive forgiveness of sins. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7).

Pass away unto eternal life.
