The Lord Jesus – Our Righteousness

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHEOUSNESS – (Jer.23:5-6).

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth” – (Rom.10:4).

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin: that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” – (2 Cor.5:21).

Here in (Jer.23:6) in bold-faced capitalized print – so it will stand out prominently – is a most important title of the Lord Jesus Christ – THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. The Lord has a name now – both a divine name and a human name because He is both the son of God and the son of man. His name is the Lord Jesus Christ and to those of us who are saved by Him, we are made the righteousness of God in Him. He is the Lord (Jesus) our righteousness.

He is the righteous Branch of David, the root and the offspring of David, the most righteous descendant of David. The scripture of truth says – “Who knew no sin” – (2 Cor.5:21) and again in (Heb.9:28) “Without sin.” The Lord Jesus Christ is the only sinless human who ever lived on planet earth. The only one who is truly righteous in God’s eyes. And so when He died and shed His blood on the Branch of Calvary, He became our righteousness when we repent of our sins and believe on Him by faith. Can you not see him carry the branch to Calvary to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. On the branch it was written – “The King of the Jews” – (Mk.15:26). He’s coming back as King of Kings to rule as an emperor of righteousness with judgment and justice over the whole earth. He will be the executive Branch of government and the judicial Branch of government and the legislative Branch. PTL Jesus – the Branch is coming back – the Lord our righteousness indeed. “For the Lord is our Judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us” – (Is.33:22).

The Lord Jesus is our righteousness by making satisfaction to the justice of God for the sins of man. He has brought in everlasting righteousness. It is righteousness by grace through faith to the believer that makes the righteousness with God ours, and by which we are justified before God for our sins, acquitted from guilt and accepted into favor with the Father. This doctrine of the righteousness of God in Christ is the key to understanding the salvation of man.

It is written in (Philip. 3:9) “And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.” If a man, by his own self-righteousness and good works, can save himself, then there was no need for a savior. But in God’s eyes, “There is none righteous, no, not one.” All the have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” – (Rom.3:10,23). “All our righteousness is as filthy rags” - (Is.64:6).

Our righteousness is provided by God the Father thought His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus. “Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all that believe: for there is no difference” – (Rom.3:22). It is very important for us to recognize that God is the one who provides this righteousness. It takes a righteous God to account us righteous. We need the righteousness of God. It is not something that man can work out, but it is something that God has provided for us. The only way of procuring this righteousness is by faith. It’s a (by-faith) righteousness. You can’t work for it. It comes by faith in Christ. “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justified the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness” – (Rom.4:5).

How did Abraham become righteous in Gods’ sight? Because he was a believer, God reckoned righteousness to him – (Rom.4:3 – Gen.15:6). Faith in the Lord Jesus our righteousness secures righteousness for sinful man. God imputes righteousness without works. What a beautiful word ‘imputed’ is.  (Setting to someone’s account or reckoning something to another person. God credits to us that which we don’t have in ourselves). Paul is talking about the imputed righteousness of Christ. God places a lost sinner in Christ and he sees him in Christ. The saved believer is absolutely righteous because of what Christ has done for him. The ‘imputation’ of righteousness lies at the heart of the bible doctrine of salvation. God grants righteousness to those who have saving faith in Christ.

This righteousness is a free gift of God – it’s grace. It’s called “the gift of righteousness” in (Rom.5:17). It’s a gift from God the Father through His beloved Son. It’s all by grace. Eternal life instead of eternal death. Heaven instead of hell. All because of the Lord Jesus our Righteousness. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness” – ((Rom.10:10). Over and over in the Bible God plainly shows us how to become righteous in His sight. We repent of our sins and believe on Christ and get saved and God imputes righteousness to us.

But then a saved person lives a righteous life. He’s been saved and born again by the Holy Spirit. Holy living is the fruit of one who has been made righteous in Christ. He “Follows after righteousness” – (I Tim.6:11 – 2 Tim.2:22). If you’re saved, you’ll live like it and bear Godly fruit. He does good works because he is saved – (Eph.2:7-10). It is written in (I Jn.2:29) “If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that everyone that doeth righteousness is born of him.” It does not matter who the person is or what he is – he is a doer of righteousness when he’s born again. When he believes on Christ for righteousness in God’s sight, in his heart, it will be manifested in his life. He doeth righteousness – he follows after righteousness. “Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness” – (Is.45:24).

One day we righteous saints will be clothed in white linen for “fine linen is the righteousness of saints” – (Rev.19:7-8). It shows the righteous bride of Christ in outward appearance that our sinful hearts are washed white as snow by the Lamb of God. Yes truly, the Lord Jesus is called the Lord our righteousness. It is the very foundation of salvation. No wonder God wrote it in bold-faced capitalized print to stand out for all to see as very important, and yet multiplied millions of people try to be saved by their own works of righteousness in direct rejection of the Word of God.

The Lord Jesus Christ is coming back as the God-King, King of Kings and Lord of Lords and emperor over the whole earth. He will reign forever and ever, a kingdom without end. And he will reign in righteousness – he will be a righteous king – “But unto the Son he saith, thy thrown, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom” – (Heb.1:8). And we who have been saved and made righteous by Him will rule and reign with Him over a righteous earth – “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” – (Rev.5:10).

Is the Lord Jesus Christ your righteousness? When were you saved and born again? “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17). Repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart for remission of sins. “For he hath made him to be sin of for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” – (2 Cor.5:21). Don’t die and go to hell because you rejected God’s righteousness in His beloved Son.

Receive the righteousness of Christ by faith
