The Serpent’s New Skin
“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou should not eat?” – (Gen.3:7,10,11). “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment” – (Jn.7:24).
It is not unusual to find almost perfect snake skins in the wild. Serpents grow a complete new skin several times a year. They slip out of the old one, turning it inside out, and leaving it behind like a hollow tube. This process is called ‘molting.’ And it is our heavenly Father who created him this way and who foreknew that the serpent would be a symbol of Satan. And God is teaching us much spiritual wisdom about this molting process of serpents and their many bright new skins. It shows us that the Serpent, that old Devil, is concerned about outward appearances and the flesh and tempts people to be the same way. This shows us that the natural man – “looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” – (I Sam.16:7).
When God created the serpent He foreknew that he would be the symbol of Satan and He designed him accordingly. We can learn much spiritual truth about Satan by meditating on the serpent’s make-up. In this sermon I’m zeroing in on the serpent’s skin and another definition of make-up is (to apply cosmetics to). O yes, a new skin.
How unsaved people love to go to plastic surgeons and have cosmetic surgery today. They want to have the wrinkles of old age taken away and smoothed out. They want to improve their outward appearance. They want new youthful skin and to reverse the aging process cosmetically. They are deceived by Satan, the Serpent, who gets them to be concerned about their outward appearance but to care nothing about their inward appearance in the sight of God.
How especially women care about their complexions and their beauty. They buy much cosmetics for their skin and care deeply about external and superficial features. Some even have cosmetic cases to carry with them just for their looks. They want to be superficially attractive. Very few women believe God’s Word that beauty is only skin deep and that it is the heart that counts. How many young men are deceived by the beautiful outward appearance of a woman who is inwardly very ugly? “Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity” – (Song 1:2). How foolish and deceived it is to have a 40 year old face and yet have inward organs that are 75 years old. You don’t die because of old skin, you die because your body parts get old and quit working. Death is not outward but inward, and if you want to conquer your death and have eternal life then you will have to be concerned about inward sins that cause your death. You have to go to the great physician, the Lord Jesus, who will not give you a new skin but who only has the power to give you a new heart and a new spirit within and you will become a new creature in Christ. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17). And again in (Ezk.36:26,27). “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you.” Believe the gospel of Luke, who was a physician.
I’ve been in many churches where some woman teaches the ladies how to be attractive and wear cosmetics etc. etc. but when I would preach that a woman is commanded to obey her husband and have a meek and quiet spirit these same women would shake their heads from side to side in disagreement with God’s Word and the very bossy ones would even come up and confront me afterwards. How these churches today are following the serpent’s new skin of outward appearance and they deceive others in this doctrine of devils as well. “Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives. While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement” – (I Pet.3:1-6). (Prov.31:30) says it this way – “Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” Do not desire a new skin – desire a new heart and conquer death through Jesus Christ. You cannot save your own skin – Jesus must save you and Him alone.
The serpent’s special skin points directly to the flesh and to the lust of the flesh. Skin points to nudes and skin magazines and pornography and sex sins of all kinds – and this means new young skin, not old wrinkled skin. New skin and nakedness is one of the serpent’s most wicked snares. He beguiles men and women worldwide to commit fornication and sex sins by the millions. Sin and nakedness go together from the first sin in Eden. “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” The serpent tempted the naked woman Eve and caused her to sin and (Gen.3:7) says – “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons”. Their eyes were opened to their shame and grief.
Immediately after Adam and Eve sinned it is written – “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew they were naked.” They knew they were naked. That was the sinful knowledge they received when they ate from the tree of knowledge. They were now dead in trespasses and sins and darkness entered within and suddenly the fleshly physical side of their being was thrust into a prominence it had never had before. The lust of the flesh was now in them and carnal knowledge of each other was soon to come. The fig leaves represent man’s earliest attempt to cover up his sin and cloak his guilt and shame. Satan’s skin sins started here with the first sin and now is in full bloom worldwide with 6 billion people. The serpent is always on the lookout for new skins and who will do his wicked work in his vast worldwide skin and sin snare. It’s the serpent’s number one most enticing snare – the sex snares. The serpent’s new skins points to the lust of the flesh and outward appearance and is the opposite of the Holy Spirit and the inward holiness of the soul. It points to the carnal as opposed to the spirit. The first sin brought the bare skin into prominence. “And he said, who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou should not eat?” – (Gen.3:11). Yes – the Serpent’s new skin. Their inward sin brought into prominence their outward skin and the flesh and outward appearance and death.
Hear the wisdom of the Lord Jesus as He points us from the outward to the inward appearance – “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity” – (Mt.23:27,28). Yes man “looketh at the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” And then the Lord Jesus said, because they were deceivers and cared only about outward appearance, and not about the heart within. “Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” – (Vs.33). He said they were children of the Devil, the Serpent, who has several new skins a year and loves outward appearance and cares nothing about the sinful appearance of the heart. Jesus said the same in (Jn.8:44) “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.” Jesus was saying that the religious leaders, with all their religious garments, were nothing but camouflaged serpents. And our pulpits are filled with the same king of unsaved vipers today. I’m preaching this to edify the body of Christ and build it up so we can be “wise as serpents”– (Mt.10:16). The serpent is an evil genius and it behooves us to be wise in his ways. The serpent’s new skin shows us outward appearance and the lust of the flesh and carnal mindedness which is the opposite of God. Change the outward, but the inward remains the same.
“Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them” – (Gen.3:21). Adam and Eve discovered that the fig leaves of their own works would not do to cover their skin and sin. God moves in grace to rescue His fallen creatures. In Eden, blood was shed for the first time. A lamb was taken in their stead and slaughtered and it’s blood shed and it’s covering of skin made a covering for their skin. It was the first illustration of the cost of Calvary and atonement for sin. This was the origin of sacrifice. Man must have adequate covering to approach a holy God. You cannot approach God naked and in your sins. You cannot come to God on the basis of your good works. You must come just as you are – a sinner. Homemade fig leaves are unacceptable. God must provide the covering. The covering is only obtained through the bloody sacrifice of Christ on the cross. “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered” – “Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sins” – (Ps.32:1 and 35:2). “Through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement” – (Rom.5:11).
The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is our perfect supreme, one-time sacrifice for sin on the cross. He is our covering for our sin. It’s a free gift of God – it’s solely by His grace. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast’ – (Eph.2:8,9). Repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart by faith and be born again. Don’t spurn God’s amazing grace in His beloved Son.
