The New Birth

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:3-7).

The Lord Jesus did not come into this world and suffer the torture and shame of the cross simply because we might become better moral beings and make the world a better place to live in. Until the very moment when he said, “It is finished” – and passed His Spirit back to God, all that He did, all that He said, all that He suffered was in order that you and I might be born again and have within our bosom the Spirit and nature of the living God.

Through the miracle of the new birth we poor, finite creatures have the divine nature of the eternal God. And that miracle is made possible ‘only’ as we truly believe in Christ in our heart to save us. Born again describes what happens to a person when he’s truly saved – He becomes a new man.

We must be born of God, we must be begotten of God the Father through His only begotten Son on the cross. James declares – “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures”- (Jam.1:18). Paul said – “…..for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel” – (1Cor.4:15). Peter said “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us….” (1Pet.1:3). Peter preaches again – “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever” – (1Pet.1:23). There is no verse in all the Word of God that is more clearer or more easily understood than (1Pet.1:23). We are born again, not of the corruptible seed of our earthly father that produced a fleshly birth that soon decays and dies, but we are born again of the incorruptible seed of our heavenly Father which gives us eternal life and an incorruptible body that shall never die.

The Word of God’s gospel is the spiritual seed that is germinated in our hearts by our belief in the preached Word. The seed is dead until we believe it in our hearts and then it produces a new heart and a new spirit and a new nature within us – we become a new creature in Christ – born again. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:7). And one day God will give us a new name to fit our newborn character, as Saul was changed to Paul and Simon to Peter – (Rev.3:12).

The Word of God when believed is quick, it’s alive and will produce life – (Heb.4:12). As the Word of God liveth and abideth forever, so shall all those who are born again by it, live forever. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” – (I Jn.5:11,12).

(Titus 3:5) says – “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” We are not saved by our good works, but by God’s grace and mercy in His dear Son on the cross. Paul did not say, “by the washing of the baptistry”, nor did he say “by the merits of good, clean, moral living.” He said – “By the washing of regeneration.” And regeneration comes by believing God’s Word as we repent of our sins. The Holy Spirit convicts us, draws us, and baptizes us into the true temple of God not made with hands and births us into the family of God. Regenerate means (to beget – formed or created again – spiritually reborn). We are generated into this generation the first time when we’re born of the flesh and we are regenerated a second time when we’re born again through Christ by the Holy Spirit. As Christ was born of His Father by the Holy Ghost, so must we.

It is written – “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” – (Jn.1:12,13). Those who receive Christ are born into the family of God. We do not ‘join’ Jesus, we do not ‘join’ Christianity, we do not ‘join’ salvation. We are born again into God’s family. Our new birth comes through salvation by Christ – we have new life in Christ. This birth is not of human blood or of the flesh, but through the blood of Christ by God.

We can no more save ourselves than we can ‘born’ ourselves into physical existence. We owe our physical existence to our parents and we owe our spiritual birth through our heavenly Father who ‘births’ us into His family as the children of God. We do not join God’s family – we are born into it. Church membership has never saved anyone, and never will. The water in the baptistery has never saved anyone and never will. Good clean, moral living has never saved anyone, and never will. Sincere religious activity has never saved anyone, and never will. God saves us by His grace when we repent of our sins and exercise true faith in the Lord Jesus. The baptism of John cannot save you, only the baptism of the Lord Jesus, the baptism of the Holy Ghost. “For by one spirit are we all baptized into one body” – (I Cor.12:13). John prepared the way for Christ by baptizing with water outwardly unto repentance and true repentance and belief in Christ will produce the ‘inward’ baptism of the Holy Spirit. And so we are to preach – “Repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” – (Acts 20:21). There is no greater lie than for a hypocritical church member to say than – “I’m saved, I love Jesus, but I’ve never been born again.” Our churches today are filled with unsaved church members who have not become born again members into the church of Christ. They have not the Holy Spirit in them.

There are men today in the pulpits of America – who have degrees from schools of theology – and yet they cannot preach the simplicity of the new birth to their people because they have not experienced it themselves. They are ministers of Satan – “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works” – (2 Cor.11:14,15). Any preacher who fails to tell his people that they must be born again, will give account at their judgment and will spend eternity in hell for leading people astray.

All people are born dead spiritually in trespasses and sins and need to be quickened or made alive in Christ when we’re saved – “Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)” – (Eph.2:5). Again –“And you being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses” – (Col.2:13). All people are the walking, talking dead until they’re born again in Christ. We have a born again Spirit that’s alive unto God and one day we’ll receive a new eternal body – a born again immortal body. Those that are born again are “passed from death unto life” – (Jn.5:24).

A man that is not born again is blind – “Except a man be born again, he cannot see…”  Again – “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” – (2 Cor.4:3,4). We preach the gospel “To open their eyes, and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God..” – (Acts 26:18).

Love, and especially love of the brethren is one of the main fruits of a born again believer – “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and everyone that loveth him that begat loveth him that is begotten of him” – (I Jn.5:1). A born again believer has overcomed the world by his faith – “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”

When you believe on God the Father’s only begotten Son, you are begotten of the Father also, born again into God’s family, a child of God. A born again child of God is free born, born again from the spiritual bondage of sin. Our first fleshly birth gendereth to bondage – “Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. So then, brethren, we are not the children of the bond woman, but of the free” – (Gal.4:28,29,31). “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” – (Jn.8:36).

Before we’re saved and born again we were by nature the children of wrath – “…our conversation in times past in the lust of the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others” – (Eph.2:3). But after we’re born again we have the divine nature of God – “…partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” – (2 Pet.1:4). With the divine nature we have spiritual discernment that we didn’t have in the natural man – “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they spiritually discerned” – (I Cor.2:14). We have the great privilege of being on the same spiritual wave length as God so that God can reveal His deep things to us.

Are you born again? Everyone knows when he becomes a totally new creature in Christ. You must be honest with yourself and God and with a repentant heart call upon the Lord Jesus to save you. God loves you and gave His beloved Son to die on the cross as your Savior. He wants to give you life instead of death – “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23). God has set before you life and death. He wants you to choose life. He wants you to receive new life in Christ – to be born again and have your name written in the book of life of the Lamb – (Philip.4:3 – Rev.13.8). If you reject life in Christ you will receive eternal death in the lake of fire. “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” – (Rev.20:14,15). Is your name written there?

Remember what the Lord Jesus said – “Ye MUST be born again.”
