Christ our Mediator
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” – (I Tim.2:5,6).
A mediator is one who goes between two groups or persons to help them work out their differences and come to agreement. A mediator usually is a neutral party, a go-between, intermediary, or arbitrator who brings about reconciliation in a hostile situation when divided persons are not able to work out their differences themselves.
Job longed for such a mediator – “Neither is there any daysmen betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both” – (Job ). The longed-for mediator has now come. God’s grace has wonderfully provided for us a Divine Daysman to stand between poor sinful man and a holy God. Jesus Christ is our Divine Daysman, and in his twofold nature (God in flesh) he is in a position to “lay his hand upon us both.” He is the hand of humanity because he was “the man, Christ Jesus.” He is the hand of deity because He is God. And as Jesus lays His hands upon us – the hand of divinity and the hand of humanity – both hands bear the scars that were inflicted when He was nailed to the cross when He paid the cost of our redemption. The scars in His hands are the seal of the mediation between sinful man and a holy God, perfected through the bloody death of Christ. He is our ransom demanded by God’s holiness and righteousness, paid for by God’s love, provided for all – whether they take advantage of it or not. “God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself” – (2 Cor.5:19).
Jesus Christ, God’s Son, and the second person of the Godhead, is the only mediator between God and man. He became a man and lived among men on this planet in space. He was truly God and truly man and free from sin. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. As a true human being, he grew up, went to school, lived in a home, had brothers and sisters, worked as a carpenter. He knew what it was like to be hungry, thirsty, and tired. He experienced joy and sorrow, grief and pain. He prayed, suffered, bled and died. He was man while never ceasing to be God. He knew that He was God – (Lk.2:48-59) and declared himself to be God – (Jn.8:57-59).
The Lord Jesus knows all there is to know about God because He is God; He knows all there is to know about man because He was man. He can lay His hands on both God in heaven and man on earth. The great gulf has been spanned. He told Nathaniel that He was the ladder of Jacob between heaven and earth, the link between man and God. Christ is our great High Priest. (Heb.4:14) and our advocate with the Father (I Jn.2:1). The Lord Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man.
“The Man, Christ Jesus” – The mediator
is not a woman.
The only possible way any person can ever stand before a holy God and hear Him say, “Well done,” is to stand before God in the holiness and righteousness of Christ. In Him we have salvation; in Him we are holy and righteous, and apart from him we are hopelessly lost. God saves us – “For Christ’s sake” – (Eph.4:32), and it is only for Christ’s sake not any merit on our own part. By way of sacrificial atonement, salvation is made possible for everyone, although we deserve eternal hell – “Without shedding of blood is no remission” – (Heb.8:22).
Three times in the book of Hebrews Jesus Christ is said to be our mediator – “But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant which was established upon better promises” – (Heb.8:6). “And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament…(Heb.9:15). “And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better things than that of Abel” – (Heb.12:24).
“Jesus Christ is the mediator of the New Testament.” But not according to the ASV or the NASV or the NIV or the RSV or Evangelicals or Catholics or Protestants and most Fundamentalists. They say He can only be the mediator of the New Covenant. They take away from God’s infallible Word and are under the curse – (Rev.22:18,19). The word ‘covenant’ means (1) an agreement between two parties, (2) a formal solemn and binding agreement, and (3) a contract. A covenant is made without the death of a man. A testament is involved in the death of the testator. In (Heb.9:15) the gospel is likened to and is in fact a last will and testament. It’s the last will and testament of the Lord Jesus and it shows the bloody death of Christ to make this testament valid.
A testament is surely a covenant (an agreement or contract). But it only goes into force when the testator dies. The convent becomes a testament because it becomes effective after his death. Millions of people have gone to lawyers and made out a last will and testament and they didn’t make out a last will and covenant – amen. This contract is a testament. A testament is a voluntary act and deed of a single person, duly executed and witnessed, bequeathing legacies to heirs, which takes place after his death. It’s a free gift – it’s grace. Eternal inheritance is the great legacy that Christ, by His last will and testament, has bequeathed to those who are saved by Him.
Let me again emphasize the Bible truth that there is ‘one’ mediator between God and men – THE MAN, CHRIST JESUS. Not the pastor, not the evangelist, not the bishop, not the pope, not the priest, not the virgin Mary, not any religion. God almighty names that one mediator in order that there is no mistake. It’s His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and no other – the God Man.
The Devil is most deceitful when
counterfeiting the truth of God. His antichrist will interpose himself as
mediator and so we must watch this area of mediatorship with the president of
Right now former Pres. Carter is running
around the world acting as a mediator between warring parties, trying to bring
reconciliation between them. President Carter’s favorite and most notable
achievement as President, was when he acted as
And if Antichrist is a black president, or even better, half black and half white, and so becomes a mediator to reconcile black and whites, and Democrats and Republicans, he will also be a counterfeit of Christ as mediator. He would become a personification of a tolerant, misegenistic ‘United’ States. He would present, in both his words and His person, a mediator who unites together and makes reconciliation between blacks and whites. All who refuse Jesus Christ as God’s mediator and be reconciled to God, will receive and worship the Devil’s counterfeit mediator, the Antichrist. The U.S. Secret Service is a bureau of the Treasury Dept. Their primary responsibility is to protect the President and also to stop the counterfeiting of our money. Counterfeit means – (made in imitation of something with the intent to deceive). And one day soon our Secret Service will protect our Antichrist-President who rules the world as emperor exactly like the S.S. protected Hitler. The Antichrist will be the greatest counterfeit of Christ that Satan has ever produced.

The contrast in this passage is between Jew
and Gentile. When Jews and Gentiles are saved by Christ, then peace is made
between them, not written down in a peace agreement on paper, but written in the
heart. Enmity between the two is broken down. When Christ reconciles you to God
then you’re also reconciled to the brethren in Christ. The color of your skin
makes no difference. White, brown, red, black – all are one in Christ and so
peace is made between the races. The wall of separation is broken down. True
brotherhood is composed of those that are born again children of God. A man may
have skin as white as snow, but if he is not a child of God, he is not my
brother. A man may have skin as black as pitch, and if he’s a child of God, he’s
my brother. The wall of hatred and separation is broken down by the blood of Christ.
This is racial reconciliation God’s way.
You can see a type of this wall today that is separating Jews and Arabs in
Is Christ your mediator? Do you have peace with God by being saved by the Lord Jesus? If not, repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins and be born again into the family of God. Then you will no longer be the enemy of God, but a friend of God. You will be reconciled to God by God’s one and only mediator, His beloved Son, and you will love the brethren of all nationalities and colors. Racial pride and hatred flows away in the blood of Christ. We await the second coming of the Prince of Peace who also can give peace on earth and good will towards men. God’s plan for racial reconciliation is by being saved by Jesus Christ, God’s mediator between God and man.
Watch and pray always.
