Lusting and Despising God’s Manna – His Son
“And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of
“And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna… that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live” – (Du.8:3).
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven” – (Jn.6:47-51).
The manna which God provided for
In my first sermon I considered the manna as the Bible. In this sermon I will consider the manna as the incarnate Word of God, the Lord Jesus. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. (and we behold his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth” – (Jn.1:1,14). The Lord Jesus is the Word, the second person of the trinity, the Son of God. “God who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son” – (Heb.1:2). Christ is the final spokesman of God. “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him” – (Jn.1:18) Christ is the only one who is the spokesman of God, the one who has declared or told forth the Father.
Christ is the one who has made the incomprehensible God intelligible. He has revealed God’s manna, expressed His will and made known to us the character of the Father. With words Christ has made manifest the invisible God. Christ, as the Word, has communicated to us who and what God is. He revealed the attributes and perfections of God. In Christ, and nowhere else, is God fully and finally told out. Christ was God himself made manifest, not only the revealer of God, but God himself revealed. Yes, Christ is the manna, the Word of God come down from heaven upon sinful man wandering in their wilderness of sin, lost.
The manna fell in the Wilderness of Sin. Surely God is showing man’s journey through a life of being tempted by sin. Surely this was also shown to us when the Lord Jesus was tempted by the Devil when he was in the wilderness for 40 days and how He conquered the Devil by the Word of God and ‘It is written.’ And one scripture Jesus quoted to Satan was – “It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God’ – (Lk.4:4). The Word of God, the Lord Jesus, quoted the Word of God when tempted by sin. The Manna of God quoted the manna of God – amen. The Living Word, quoted the written Word of God.
The Israelites sinful ways in the wilderness are examples to us and a warning not to follow their ways. “But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted” – (I Cor.10:6,7). We should follow the example of the perfect Jew, Jesus Christ, and His temptation in the wilderness.
The manna was a free gift from God. No charge was made for the manna. It was neither a wage to be earned nor a prize to be won, but was a token of God’s grace and love. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16). Again – “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift” – (2 Cor.9:15). Christ – the free gift of God.
The manna was despised by the worldly people. Hear this about the despised one – “And when we shall see him there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men” – (Is.53:2,3). Unbelievers despise and reject God’s manna come down from heaven to give them eternal life – The Lord Jesus.
The manna was white in color. This speaks of the spotless, sinless purity of the Lord Jesus. He – “Knew no sin” – (2 Cor.5:21). “He was without sin” – (Heb.4:15). “He did no sin” – (I Pet.2:22). “He was a lamb without spot and blemish” – (I Pet.1:19). He was without spot and sin, pure white.
The manna was like honey. The words from the Incarnate Word were sweet as honey. We must say this about the Lord Jesus’ words – “How sweet are thy words to my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth” – (Ps.119:103). Hear these honey words of Christ – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16). “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation: but is passed from death unto life” – (Jn.5:24). There can be no sweeter honey words ever spoken that these – the offer of forgiveness of sin and eternal life through Him. All of God’s Word is honey but the words of the Lord Jesus are the sweetest of all.
The manna of Christ is now hidden. In (Rev.2:17) we read – “To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna.” Christ is now hidden in heaven, unseen by the natural eye. But He’s coming back again and He shall be manifested before all the world. We shall not only see the heavenly manna, but we shall eat of it again, fresh and new from His mouth. Our spiritual heritage is to eat more of the Incarnate Word as He speaks to us saints for eternity. Not only do the overcomers in Christ have the promise of being given the manna of God’s Word that is hidden to the lost, but we have the promise of possibly an encyclopedia of Bibles that will be given us when He returns. “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory” – (I Cor.2:7).
Jesus Christ is the spiritual food, the manna, needed by man. Just as physical man needs to eat in order to live, so the Lord Jesus gives life to the soul. If you receive Christ, the bread of life, you have eternal life and if you don’t you face eternal death in the lake of fire. The manna was salvation for the Israelites’ bodies. God however knew of the greater need for salvation of the soul and He had a plan to meet that need – His Son, the bread of eternal life. You need to receive Christ by faith, not stick your tongue out and receive a Catholic Eucharist. A priest may place a wafer in your mouth but he cannot place faith in your heart.
It’s possible that Antichrist will counterfeit Christ as the bread of life. During the tribulation, people will not be able to buy food to live unless they receive the mark of the Beast and worship the Beast and his image. Perhaps Antichrist’s image will be on Catholic Eucharistic hosts and on Protestant communion bread as people under strong delusion blindly swallow them in worship to Antichrist as the bread of life.
Notice (Num.11:4) again – “Fell a lusting:
and the children of
O yes, the manna, ‘what is it?’ They are still the words of the unbeliever toward God’s Word. The riches of Christ are hidden from them because they despise and reject Him. They know not that He is the Word of God in truth. The Israelites said – “It is manna: for they wist (knew) not what it was” – (Ex.16:15). It is written of Christ the Manna from heaven – “He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not” – (Jn.1:10). But we believers know Him “And we ‘know’ that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we ‘know’ that the Son of God is come, and hath given to us all understanding, that we may ‘know’ him that is true…” – (I Jn.5:20,21). Do you know Christ? Do you know He’s the manna of life come down from heaven to give life to a sinful, dying world? The manna is the Son of man. Man lives by manna.
Is Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior? Have you become a new creature in Christ, born again of the Holy Spirit? Are you truly saved? Born again describes what happens to you when you’re truly saved. When you’re born again then you know that you have passed from death unto life. When God becomes your father and you become a child of God then you know you have eternal life. “Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17).
If you’re not born again by believing the seed of God’s Word, repent of your sins and believe on the Lord Jesus in your heart by faith calling upon Him to save you. If you do this in truth then you will receive forgiveness of sin and a new nature and a new heart and a new spirit within you. “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever” – (I Pet.1:23). This Word of God is the miracle manna from God that produces a miracle birth in you. It’s the manna of eternal life. Believe the words of Christ. He is the manna – He is the Word of God because He is God. He is the bread of eternal life. Do not despise and reject Him, or you’ll weep in hell for eternity.
