Christ – The Great Light in the Shadow of Death

“The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up” – (Mt.4:16).

The definition of shadow is – (a reflected image – an imperfect and faint representation of – a dark figure cast upon a surface by the sun – a constant companion). (Job 8:9) says – “… our days upon earth are as a shadow.” We walk, from the time we are born, in the shadow of our death. We are to look at our shadow and think – my life is casting the shadow of my death even while I live. It’s my constant companion. I’m not to try to pretend that my death will never happen and have my head in the sand and not face up to it.

Even while we live, we are in the darkness and shadow of death and our shadow is a constant reminder of our death because of our sins. God told Adam that if he ate of the forbidden tree – “... thou shalt surely die” – (Gen.2:17). All have sinned and therefore all shall die “… and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” – (Rom.5:12). Sin is the cause of death, both the first death of the body and the second death in the lake of fire. Hell is outer darkness, the blackness and darkness for ever – (Jude 13). Sin has placed us all in spiritual darkness and we walk in the dark like a blind man.

Darkness and sin stand for death and light stands for life and the Lord Jesus Christ is the great light that shines in the darkness and shadow of death. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23). Again – “I am the light of he world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” – (Jn.8:12). Your life is spent as a shadow and without Christ you have no hope to conquer death. Just look at your shadow and then look at the sun. God’s Son will give you light and life over your constant companion and shadow of death. Jesus Christ has conquered the shadow of death that we constantly walk in by His shed blood on the cross for sins and His glorious resurrection. Are you saved and born again? Do you have forgiveness of sins and the light of Christ in you? Have you conquered the darkness of your death?

This whole world sits in the darkness and shadow of death and there is no hope in this world to conquer death without Christ. Christ offers light and life to those of us who are walking corpses. We have the shadow of our death dogging our every footsteps. “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that beliveth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” – (Jn.11:25). That’s why the sun was darkened when Jesus died on the cross. It signified death and darkness. And that’s why His resurrection is shown at daybreak, at the dawn of day when light comes upon a dark world. “And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came into the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here…” – (Mk.16:2,6). When God’s sun arose, the Son of God arose, to prove that He is life and light to a lost, sinful world, dead in trespasses and in the darkness of sins. The death, burial and resurrection of Christ shows us sins forgiven on the cross and the conquering of death by His resurrection at dawn.

Man walks in the shadow of death all of his life. He wanders in sin wretched, not knowing the way to go. Then the sun of righteousness arose from death and gave light and life to a dark world of death and sin. We rejoice in the hope of eternal life because of God’s great grace in His beloved Son. Eternal life is given to all the blood-bought saints of God. Christ only has conquered death and offers immortality to all that will come to Him. “Who only hath immortality” – (I Tim.6:16). This is the gospel that we preach to all - Jew and Gentile. Look at the sun. Without sunlight there could be no life, all would be darkness and death. Light and life is in God’s Son – Jesus Christ is the light of this world.

It is written in (Heb.9:5) “And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy seat…” several times in the Bible it talks of the ‘shadow of God’s wings.’ To trust and rejoice under the shadow of God’s wings – under God’s cherubims’ wings that are shadowing the mercy seat. On the Day of Atonement the sacrificial blood was put on the mercy seat upon the Ark of the Covenant in the holy place for forgiveness and atonement of sins. But it was shadowed and typified by the shadow of death and the atonement on the cross. Not once each year, but one time forever. “Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things… (Heb.10:5). Again – “For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” – (Heb.10:1,10). The tabernacle Moses built was a mere model of the heavenly tabernacle. The Old Testament priests ministered in the model, but Christ our High Priest, ministers in the true tabernacle in heaven. The high priest Aaron could only approach God after having made the appropriate sacrifices which were constantly repeated over the years. Christ, also, has approached God with the appropriate sacrifice – the sacrifice to end all sacrifices – the sacrifice of himself. Our High priest didn’t sacrifice an animal, He sacrificed himself for us. O how can you spurn His love on the cross and refuse to get saved and born again? The priests and the sacrifices are but a shadow of Christ to come. In the Old Testament era, the Jews had only shadows – the substance is Christ. The shadow of Calvary cannot take away sin, only Christ on the cross can do that. Yes, Christ is the great light in the shadow of death.

Remember King Hezekiah in the Old Testament who was sick and about to die and he wept and prayed unto the Lord and God added 15 years more to his life. God’s sign to him concerning this was God bringing the sun back which brought the shadow back 10 degrees on the sun dial. God turned back the clock and gave Hezekiah 15 more years of allotted time of life. God moved the shadow of his death back 15 years. Through God’s great light of His beloved Son, you can have eternal life and conquer your shadow of death forever – you can have immortality, Satan is the ruler of the darkness of this world – (Eph.6:12) but Christ has delivered us from the power of darkness when we’re saved – (Col.1:13). Truly believing the gospel of Christ turns you from darkness and the power of Satan to the light of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins…” – (Acts 26:1-8).

Antichrist is the ‘shadow man’ who brings great darkness and death upon the whole world. He’s the opposite of Christ who is the ‘light man’, the great light who brings life to all who are saved by Him. Millions of people were killed by an antichrist named Hitler, who was the shadow man during WW II. He brought darkness and death to the world as Satan, the prince of darkness ruled behind Hitler’s throne. But Antichrist, the shadow man soon to come, will make Hitler seem mild by comparison. He is a man of great darkness and evil because the prince of darkness, Satan, dwells in him. He will be loved by all the unsaved children of darkness and he will persecute the saints of light who refuse to get his mark – 666. But he will be defeated by Christ the great light at His second coming at Armageddon and all his saints of light with Him. Europe turned their backs on Christ and His cross, so God gave them an antichrist and the crooked cross, the swastika. As it is written – “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But He that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be manifest, that they are wrought in God” – (Jn.3:19-21).

Here is the cause of man’s unbelief: he loves the darkness and sin rather than light and righteousness. This is proof of man’s depravity. It is not only that men are in the dark, but they ‘love’ the darkness and hate the light of God’s Word. That’s why men refuse to read the scriptures and hear the scriptures. God’s Word condemns them as sinners destined for the darkness of hell if they don’t get saved. But every believer doeth truth and comes to the light. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” – (Ps.119:105). Believe the light of God’s Word in Christ – “In him was life; and the life was the light of men” – (Jn.1:4).

Believe in the light. Repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins and be saved and born again. Born again describes what happens to you when you’re truly saved. You became a new creature in Christ with a new spirit, the Holy Spirit within you. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7). Do not spurn God’s great light in His Son or you’ll spend eternity in the darkness of hell. Hear the great light…

“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that beliveth in me,

though he were dead, yet shall he live.”
