Christ – The Light of the World
“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” – (Jn.8:12).
Jesus Christ is the personification of light. Jesus Christ is the God-man and the very essence of light. “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” – (Jn.1:5). Hence, when Christ affirmed “I am the light of the world”, He announced His absolute deity – He is God in human flesh – the second person of the Trinity. Thus the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled – “I, the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles” – (Is.42:6).
It is written in (Jn.1:4,5) “And the life was the light of men. And the
light shineth in darkness; and the
darkness comprehended it not.” In (verse 9) it says, “That was the true light,
which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” Every man is
lightened by the Lord Jesus, but most reject the light because they love the
darkness of their sin and will not be saved. “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and
men loved darkness rather than light,
because their deeds were evil” – (Jn.3:19). The unsaved man is spiritually
blind, he’s in the dark. What a terrible indictment of the human race. And only
the miracle of God’s amazing grace can ever bring one – “out of darkness into his
marvelous light” – (I Pet.2:9). Simeon blessed baby Jesus and said – “A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the
glory of thy people
Christ’s light is the Word of God and people when they hear the Word either stay in spiritual darkness or get saved and become enlightened by God’s Holy Spirit. “For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness” – (Ps.28:28). And again – “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” – (Eph.1:18). We’re talking about inward light, not outward light. Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh and His preaching gives light to the whole world. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” – (Ps.119:105).
John the Baptist prepared the way of the Lord Jesus – “The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light” – (Jn.1:7). This defines the character of the preacher’s office. He is a witness of the Lord Jesus, that is his theme. He testifies of Christ and preaches Christ – “That all through him might believe.” Many get saved because of God’s witnesses. They come to the light- “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord, walk as children of light” – (Eph.5:8). God’s Son is light and a true believer who is a born again child of God is called a ‘child of light.’ “While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light” – (Jn.12:36). O, what a great honor it is to be saved out of the darkness of sin and to be made a new creature in Christ – made a child of God’s light.
Not only are we ‘children of light,’ we are ‘saints in light.’ “Partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear son” – (Col.1:12,13). When we get saved and born again, we are also the light of the world and we shine for Jesus in a dark world. “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world” (Philip.2:15). Our lives are to be bright shining lights holding forth the Word of God and letting our light shine. We need to be a candlestick for Jesus and witness about Him – (Rev.11).
I believe when our redemption is complete and we get our new body, we shall shine forth outwardly as well. We shall be the shining saints of God for eternity – “Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their father…” – (Mt.13:42). The children of light will have outward light as well as inward light. We shall have a brand new glorified body like our Lord that will shine as the sun. We shall be the shining ones, stars for God. “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever” – (Dan.12:3). Stars for God, shining as human lights in this world, not just spiritually but physically also. And so we praise the Lord – “Praise ye him… all ye stars of light” – (Ps.148:3). “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body…” – (Philip.3:21).
In (Gen.1:14-18) we see that God’s lights in heaven, the sun, moon and stars, rule the night – light rules the darkness. We shall rule over Satan and the spiritual darkness of this world and we shall rule as kings on this earth. Those that are born again children of light shall shine and rule as kings. We then shall be the earth’s luminaries, the prominent stars of the world, not the wicked Hollywood stars. The Father of Lights will give us children of light, bright shining bodies. God created angels of light and of one angel it is written, “And the earth was lightened with his glory” – (Rev.18:1). But when the Lord Jesus comes back He will be the greatest light of all – “And his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength” – (Rev.1:16). He will shine with His glory as one giant candlestick. And when the golden city of God comes down to earth, New Jerusalem, it is written of Christ – “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof” – (Rev.21:23). And the prophecy of Isaiah shall be fulfilled – “The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory” – (Is.60:19). Yes, the Lord Jesus Christ is God and He is the light of this world. Spiritually He is light of the world now, but one day He will be physically the light of this world – shining forth in all of His glory – the most righteous of all.
Paul is our example of one who was a persecutor of God’s saints and caused many to be put to death and in prison, both men and women. As he chased the Christians to Damascus to take them and bring them back to Jerusalem, he saw the light of Christ. “At midday, O King, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying, Saul, Saul, why persecuteth thou me? It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And I said, who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecuteth. But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee. Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee; To open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me” – (Acts 26:13-18).
Paul was blinded by the light of Christ and taken to Damascus and a brother in Christ was sent to him and said – “Brother Saul, receive thy sight.” Paul then could see again. Paul then became a great witness for Christ, he “bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe.” Jesus said “I am the light of this world” and he manifested himself to Paul in all of His glory as a ‘blinding light.’ The light came to Paul and enlightened him with inward light. Paul showed us the blindness and darkness of the souls of men and how only the light of Christ can cure us of this spiritual blindness when we’re saved and find forgiveness of sins through Christ. As it is written – “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” – (2 Cor.4:3,4). In Paul we have the perfect example of a sinner lost and blind in his sins whom Jesus comes to in a blinding light to save him and give him spiritual light and enlighten him with the Holy Spirit. Praise the Lord Jesus, and He can do the same for you. Paul was saved on the street called ‘straight.’ Only Jesus can make a crooked man straight.
When we’re saved and become children of light then we are to have fellowship in the light, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” – (I Jn.1:7). Walk in the light of God’s Word – walk in truth. Embrace truth and not error and then do the truth. Allow God to direct your paths by His Holy Sprit through His Word. To face God is to face the light and accept the truth of God’s Word in our lives. If you turn your back to God’s truth you will turn toward darkness and away from the light. Separate yourself from the darkness. “Be not unequally yoke together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? … Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord…” – (2 Cor.6:14-17).
In many churches today a child of light would be unequally yoked together with unbelievers so he must watch closely which church he joins and make sure he has fellowship only with the born again saints in light. Stay far away from darkness in fellowship. “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” – (Eph.5:11).
Do you see? Are your eyes opened by Christ? Do you have God’ light in you? Or are you yet in the darkness of your sins? Are you saved and born again in Christ? If not, repent of your sins and by faith believe in your heart on Christ and receive forgiveness and remission of sins. If you do this in truth light will flood your soul and you will be turned form darkness to light. You will become one of the children of light, a born again child of God filled with the Holy Spirit.
If you spurn God’s beloved Son, who is the light of this world, then you will be thrown into the lake of fire and this fire will give no light. “… Cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” – (Mt.22:13). Those who love the darkness of their sins will spend eternity in hell, a place of complete darkness, with not a ray of light. O, sinner, come to Christ today and avail yourself of the marvelous grace of God in His only begotten Son on the cross. Be a bright person and receive the light of Christ. Be a witness and a candlestick for Jesus – (Rev.11:3,4). When it’s dark outside and you turn on the outside light, some insects come to the light. So it is when we preach the gospel of Christ to people in the darkness of their sins, some come to the light. “The people which sat in darkness saw great light…” – (Mt.4:16). But only some come to the light for salvation.
Come to Christ – the Light of the world.
