The Kiss of Life
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” - (Gen.2:7).
“And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life. And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord. And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands, and has stretched himself upon the child: and the flesh of the child waxed warm... And the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes” - (2 King.4:17,32-35).
“And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost” - (Jn.20:22).
The Shunamite woman’s son was a type of God’s Son, and the miracle birth and miracle resurrection of the Lord Jesus. We sometimes tend to forget that the promises of a miracle birth were shown to us with Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel and Hannah, and both the miracle of birth and resurrection was shown to us with the Shunamite woman’s son. There was also a resurrection from the grave. When the bearers of a corpse saw a gang of Moabites, they hastily threw the body into Elisha’s tomb and when the corpse touched the prophet’s bones, “he revived and stood upon his feet” - (2 Kin.13:21) - (exactly like the two witnesses - (Rev.11:11). The very gospel that we preach is the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ who resurrected from His tomb after burial. It would seem that Elisha, whom God gave a double portion of the Holy Spirit to, was the prophet of resurrection. “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you” - (Rom.8:11).
The Shunamite woman made a prophet’s chamber in her home for Elisha to stay and so he wanted to repay her kindness. And he found out that she wanted a child because they had none and her husband was old (Like Abraham and Sarah). Elisha told her she would have a baby in a year, and she did. She had received a prophet in the name of a prophet, and so received a prophet’s reward - (Mt.10:41). She built him a place in her house and God built up her house.
Years later when the child was grown, he went out to help his father during the harvest and complained of a headache and said, “my, head, my head,” which pointed directly to the Lord Jesus’ death on Calvary, the place of the skull, the ‘head’ place. His father took him home and he died in his mothers’ arms. A child of promise, a child of prayer, and given in God’s love, and taken away so that God could manifest in him the miracle of resurrection. As God the Father so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son on the cross, and resurrected Him to glory three days later.
She had a strong belief that her child would be raised to life again: like a true daughter of Sarah she accounts “That God was able to raise him up, even from the dead” - (Heb.11:19). By faith - “Women received their dead raised to life again...” - (Heb.11:35) - like Mary’s Son, the Lord Jesus. In her faith she makes no preparation for the burial of her son, but for his resurrection, for she “laid him on the bed of the man of God.” Then she rode as fast as she could to fetch Elisha.
Elisha found the son on his own bed and shut the door and did the same thing as Elijah did. First he prayed to the Lord, and then he stretched himself upon the dead son and put his mouth to the child’s mouth, as if, in God’s name he would breathe into him the breath of life - this is God’s kiss of life. He put his eyes to the boy’s eyes, to open them again to the “light of life.” Then his hand on the boy’s hands so that the hand of God would heal him. And the child sneezed seven times with his resurrection sneeze. Perhaps when God breathed into Adam His kiss of life, Adam sneezed, which gave rise to the usage of paying respect to those that sneeze by saying “God bless you.” And there is no greater blessing from God than His raising us from death unto eternal life exactly like He did with His beloved Son that first Easter. God’s love in His Son is the kiss of life - eternal life.
And God had his prophet Elisha perform this resurrection in this particular way to show man about ‘artificial respiration,’ which is called ‘the kiss of life.’ Artificial respiration is the technique of forcing air into the lungs when natural breathing is stopped. It is also used when breathing fails to begin in newborn infants. It is done mouth to mouth or mouth to nose and mouth. God’s Word teaches men the wisdom of artificial respiration and God also showed us this when He breathed into Adam’s nostrils the first breath of human life. Many don’t have enough love to give the kiss of life to a dead person. CPR wasn’t started in thr U.S. until the 1960’s. What an unbelieving waste of human lives.
This is the only ‘sneeze’ in the Bible and God is showing millions of ‘sneezing’ allergy people, and all of us who sneeze, that we need to be born again. We need the second breath of life from God the Holy Spirit. After Jesus resurrected from death He said “... He breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost” - (Jn.20:22). Judas’ betrayal kiss of death was turned into the kiss of eternal life when Christ rose from the dead. The breath of Christ’s lips is the kiss of eternal life, not temporary life. God’s true CPR is in His son - (Christ - Promises - Resurrection). “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” - (Jn.11:25).
Repent of your sins and believe in Christ in your heart by faith, and you will receive forgiveness of sins and be saved from hell and become a new born again creature in Christ having eternal life.
Receive God’s love in Christ who is the kiss of eternal life.
