Jericho and the Wall of Salvation

“And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of ram’s horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets… and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him. And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and women, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword. But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as we sware unto her. And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel. And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho” – (Jos.6:4,5,21,22,23,25).

“By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace” – (Heb.11:31).

“For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us” – (Eph.2:14).

When the wall of Jericho was broken down by faith, everybody and everything were slain and burnt except Rahab the harlot and her family. As it was in the days of Noah, when God destroyed the whole world with a flood, but Noah and his family were saved in the ark. Here at Jericho, the priests carried the ark around the city 13 times and Rahab and her family were saved. Moses was saved in the ark and Israel who saved by the blood on the mercy seat of the ark every year on the Day of Atonement.

It is written “… but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise” – (Is.60:18). When the wall of Jericho fell by faith many Jewish soldiers lives were saved, but also the Gentile Rahab and her family were saved. No trenches were dug, no batteries erected, no battering rams drawn up, nor any military preparations made. Thus by faith, not by force, the wall of Jericho fell. God wants us to see the wall of salvation and that’s why Rahab’s house was right on the wall – (Jos.2:15). She was taken into the family of Israel and she married a Jew named Salmon and bare a son named Boaz and is named among the ancestors of the Lord Jesus – (Mt.1:5). And it’s not happenstance that her son Boaz married the Gentile Ruth who was redeemed into the family of Israel“And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David – (Ruth 4:21,22). Yes, Salmon and Rahab’s son Boaz was in the kingly line of King David and King Jesus. Beyond a doubt, with Rahab, God was showing us that Israel’s God would become the Gentile’s God by faith in Christ – for He is the wall of salvation. She was the first of many harlots that have been saved through faith – “Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you” – (Mt.21:31). Rehab and Ruth pointed to the N.T. and salvation for the Gentiles by Christ – our wall of salvation. Each one of us saved Gentiles can say with Rahab and Ruth to the Jews – “Thy God shall be my God.”

It is written in (Eph.2:13,14)) “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us.” The result of the perfect supreme sacrifice of Christ on the cross is peace and salvation for both Jew and Gentile. He “hath broken down the middle wall of partition” between Jew and Gentile. This wall refers to the temple’s outer court which was for Gentiles, that separated from the inner court into which only the Jew dared enter. When Christ died on the cross, the wall was broken down and the veil was rent into the Holy of Holies and salvation was open to whosoever will be saved. The temple of God no longer has walls separating people because the cross of Christ and His precious blood has broken down the wall and the gospel of salvation is open to the Gentile strangers who are afar off, and to the Jews who were near. PTL Jesus, He is the wall of salvation to everyone – Jew and Gentile. And Rahab was showing us this wonderful truth.

Joshua’s name means ‘the Lord saves.’ The same word in the N.T. is JESUS. Joshua was a mighty general who conquered the armies of the nations in the Promised Land so that Israel could become God’s nation and be a spiritual light to the world. He is a type of Christ in his name and in his work. Jesus came the first time as the Savior of the world for both Jews and Gentiles. He’s coming back soon as a conquering king on a white horse with His army of saints from heaven to conquer Antichrist and his armies gathered in the Promised Land to annihilate Israel. Our Joshua-Jesus is coming as a mighty general to ‘save’ the Jews like Joshua of old and smite the nations. (Rev.19:11-21).

The seven priests blew the seven trumpets and the people shouted and the wall fell and the Israeli soldiers went through Jericho and smote everything with the sword and burnt the city. But for Rahab and her family it was a trumpet call, not of war and wrath, but of salvation. God’s Word is not only a s-word of wrath but a s-word of mercy and grace. “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people… their sins” – (Is.58:1). The preacher must trumpet the gospel sword of the grace of God in Christ, but he must also preach straight and true on particular sins. He must make the sinner feel the weight of his sins and then point the sinner to Christ on the cross for forgiveness of sins. Sometimes the preacher must raise his voice and shout out the gospel trumpet.

It is always unpopular to point out the sins of a proud people, especially those who are very religious but lost. The preacher’s trumpet must not give an uncertain sound and it must be loud enough to be heard at a distance. It must blow on hell as a warning of the fatal consequences of sin, not just the first death, but the second death in the lake of fire – (Rev.20:15). PTL Jesus for those like Rahab who take heed to the gospel trumpet and get saved and born again by Christ.

For 2000 years the gospel trumpet has blown to the whole earth as God has taken out a people for His name – the Church. And one day very soon the rapture trumpet will blow and all the dead saints in Christ and all the living saints will be taken straight up to heaven with them. And like the Jews at Jericho – there will be a great shout along with the trumpet sounding – “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds…” – (I Thes.4:16,17). I draw your attention to Jericho “And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him” Certainly with the way God has worded this last sentence of scripture, He is pointing to the rapture of the church when we ascend up straight in the air. And it was Elijah at the river Jordan by Jericho, who ascended up to heaven without dying – (2 Kings 2).

But Jericho is also the wall of God’s wrath upon sinners. Israel’s army was but a division of God’s ‘host.’ The wars of Israel are expressly called “the wars of the Lord” – (Num.21:14). Israel’s destruction of Jericho and of all the Canaanites was no private vengeance, but Divine, because their iniquities were now “come to the full” – (Gen.15:16). “And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants” – (Lev.18:25). The dispossession of the Canaanites from their native land should cause us no uneasiness, for it was no unrighteousness act on Israel’s part; rather were they made instruments of God’s holy judgment upon those who had persisted so long in their abominable sins that nothing remained but their extermination.

And this is exactly the reason for God’s great day of wrath during the great tribulation upon the ungodly. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men…” – (Rom.1:18). This is seen at Jericho with the blowing of the seven trumpets and the falling of the wall and the deaths. We must believe the gospel of Christ by faith and be saved like Rahab or we will perish with them that believe not. A part of the great tribulation wrath of God upon unbelievers is shown by seven angels blowing seven trumpets of judgment. “And I saw the seven angels which stood before God and to them were given seven trumpets” – (Rev.8:2). The wall of salvation for us Gentiles is seen by Rahab and her family and the wall of wrath seen by the deaths in Jericho.

(Rev.21) shows us clearly the eternal wall of salvation. God tells us about the eternal city of God, New Jerusalem, come down to earth after the 1000 year millennium and the wall that surrounds it. The wall is 1500 miles square and 216 ft. high, made of Jasper. The wall has twelve foundations made of precious gems and engraved with the names of the twelve apostles. The wall has twelve gates made of pearl engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel and each gate has an angel honor guard. The wall is not for defense, as the gates are always open, but is an obvious symbol of inclusion to all the universe of those who are worthy to enter into the city. It shows clearly “the wall of salvation” as only those who have been saved have the right to enter through the gates of the wall into New Jerusalem. All of us N.T. saints will be reminded forever of our great salvation by Christ as we go through the gates of the wall. “And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it…” – (Rev.21:24).

Are you a new born again creature in Christ? Born again describes what happens to you when you’re truly saved. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17). O do not spurn the marvelous grace and mercy of God in His beloved Son on the cross. Do not put your faith in good works and churchianity to save you. No water in the church baptistery can save you, only the baptism of the Holy Spirit can save you. “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles…” – (I Cor.12:13). Repent of your sins. With an honest and a contrite heart call upon the Lord Jesus to save you.

Be saved by Joshua-Jesus and flee from the wrath to come. Jesus Christ is God’s atonement for sin – (Rom.5:11). Be saved from the wrath of God by the blood of Christ – “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him” – (Rom.5:9). Receive Christ who is God’s scapegoat – He is the way of escape from a fiery hell – “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation…” – (Heb.2:2).

Be saved by Christ

He’s the wall of salvation into New Jerusalem.
