Christ: The Image of God

“Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person” – (Heb.1:3).

No one has seen the outward image of God, for He is a Spirit; but we know some of the inward character, the inward image of God, through the O.T. Word of God that has been revealed to us. In the N.T., the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the “express” image of God. Christ is the exact expression, and declaration of the character of God in all of His holiness, purity, wisdom, power, having all the attributes of His Father.

Express means (to represent in words). Christ is the written Word of God: He is not the outward image of God, but the express spiritual image of God. Christ is the human image of His Father and because His Father is a Spirit and not flesh, there is no physical description of what Jesus looked like outwardly. There is no outward appearance of Christ given to us, only the inward; His Divine character and the Words that He spoke. And we know the Father through the Word (N.T.) of the Lord Jesus.

That’s how we know that the Bible is the Word of God and not the word of man. If it was the word of man, then the first thing we would find is a physical description of what Jesus looked like. Like – He’s 6’2” tall, medium build, brown bushy hair and brown eyes and handsome. Because that is what man is focused upon, the outward appearance – “But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature: because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” – (I Sam.16:7). The N.T. gives no hint of what the outward image of Christ looked like. In the O.T., once we are told expressly of what Christ did ‘not’ look like – he was not handsome. “…he hath no form nor comeliness: and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him” – (Is.53:2). Christ was no handsome celebrity or Hollywood idol; the women did not swoon and faint over Him, because He had no outward beauty that we should desire Him. You desired Christ for spiritual reasons, not physical reasons.

There were no descriptions of Christ’s outward image given because God would not have us to make an image of Him to be worshipped. Images and idols are an abomination to God. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in the heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them,, nor serve them: For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” – (Ex.20:4,5). And God will soon visit the iniquity of the Roman Catholic Fathers and priests who not only commit abominable idolatry, but teach one billion Catholics to commit idolatry also, and pretend that they love God. We are not to ‘make’ an image, let alone worship it. We do not hire painters and sculptors etc. to come into our church and make images. God’s jealousy and judgment falls upon man like a husband’s jealousy falls upon an adulterous wife. “To whom then will ye liken God? Or what likeness will ye compare unto him? The workman melteth a graven image…” – (Is.40:18,19). You are not to make a likeness of God or His son, the Lord Jesus.

Jesus is the brightness of God’s glory. It is impossible to over-emphasize the excellency and grandeur of the Son. Jesus is the Son (Sun) of God. Thus, Jesus as God manifest in flesh, is the Light of the world and where Jesus is, there is light and where He is rejected, there is darkness, the darkness of damnation and hell. Today, God shines forth to us in a new and living way – in His Son. God is light and so Christ, in a person as the Son of God, the only begotten of God, must have the same nature and be light also. Every son of man is man; were not the nature the same, the generations would be monstrous. The Son is the glory of His father, shining forth with divine splendor. Christ is the true image and character of God; being of the same nature, He must bear the same spiritual image and likeness. Christ was not beautiful outwardly, but inwardly in the sight of God – He was sinless.

As many times a son of man is the express image of his earthly father outwardly, so is Christ the express image of His heavenly Father – inwardly. It’s as if Christ was cast in the same, exact mold of God the Father. The imposed character of God, the exact copy and image of God. “Christ, who is the image of God” – (2 Cor.4:4). He is the exact form of God – “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God’ – (Phil.2:6). The lines of Deity have been reproduced in Jesus’ humanity, so to find out the character of what God is like, we need only to look at Christ. We can take the lines of Christ’s personality and draw there lines out into infinity and obtain a perfect concept of God. Jesus is ‘God in focus.’ Jesus’ character is the character of God.

Jesus is literally the divine spiritual engraving of God. When the O.T. was in force, the holiness of God was displayed by an engraving upon the mitre and forehead of the high priest. Upon a plate of shining pure gold was engraved the words, “Holiness to the Lord.” But now, in this marvelous day of grace and the N.T., God’s image and brightness and holiness is seen in His Son; He who is absolutely holy, righteous, pure and without sin.  And so – “We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens” – (Heb.8:1). A sinless priest who offered himself as sacrifice for sin.

How much nearer, dearer, and more precious God becomes to us when we realize that His character, His life, His power, and His image are revealed to us in His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. … he that hath seen me hath seen the Father…” – (Jn.14:7,9). “I and my Father are one” – (Jn.10:30). “And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me” – (Jn.12:45). “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also” – (Jn.8:19). “That ye may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in him” – (Jn.10:38).

Soon will arise the counterfeit Christ, the Antichrist. He will claim to be the image of God and his image will be worshipped as God worldwide under penalty of death. “..that as many as would not worship the image of the Beast should be killed” – (Rev.13:15). Again – “Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God” – (2 Thes.2:4). This will be the culmination and climax of the great sin of idolatry and the last emperor worship on earth.

In truth, Antichrist will be the spiritual image of Satan, even as Christ is the spiritual image of God. God, who knows Antichrist’s heart, calls him “the son of perdition” and “that Wicked” – (2 Thes.2:3,8). And God will send the world strong delusion to believe the lie of Antichrist because they believed not the truth of Christ – (2 Thes.2:10-12).

Have you been born again and baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ? No water baptism can ever wash away your sins inwardly, only the baptism of the Holy Spirit by believing on Christ in your heart can do it. Born again describes what happens to you when you’re truly saved. You become a new spiritual creature in Christ and a radical change takes place in your life. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:7). “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7).

Repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins and become a new born again creature in Christ and an heir of God and you will inherit eternal life – “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son” – (I Jn.5:11). If you don’t, then you will receive eternal life in the lake of fire – “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” – (Rev.20:15).

Jesus Christ is God and was made in the spiritual image of God and also made in the likeness of men. He was both the Son of God and the Son of Man, so that He could be the only mediator between God and man. O do not spurn the love and grace of God in His dearly beloved Son or the wrath of God abideth on you.
