The Horned Serpent

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend about the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit” – (Is.14:12-15).

“And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his heads. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world…” – (Rev.12:3,9).

The most publicized rattlesnake of all is the sidewinder or horned rattlesnake. The name conjures up a sneaky devil bent on harm. It’s the smaller of the two rattlesnakes found in AZ, the other being the diamondback. It moves by thrusting its’ body into loops that literally carry it sideways. It has two horn-like scales above each eye which gives it a distinctly evil, devilish look. As God’s watchman I’m blowing the horn and warning you about the horned serpent and his lust for power and glory.

When God created the serpent He foreknew that he would be the symbol of Satan and He designed him accordingly. In this series of sermons on ‘Light on the Serpent’ I’m trying to give you a comprehensive word portrait of the Serpent. We can learn much spiritual truth about Satan by meditating on the serpent’s make-up. In this sermon I’m preaching on the horned serpent and his pride and lust for power and glory. Because the horn is used by animals as a weapon, it came to symbolize power. The devil is always pictured with two horns, exactly the like horned rattlesnake, and rightly so. The devil is the horned serpent who lusts after power.

The two great powers upon earth are political power and religious power and Lucifer covets both. God created him as an anointed cherub, the highest order of angels and the highest created being in the universe. But because of his sinful pride he coveted the very throne of God and desired to be worshipped as God is, and God has abased him down to the ground, symbolized by a serpent, and one day he will be cast into hell. Jesus said – “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted” – (Mt.23:12). And Satan fights to keep the human race in sin and pride and not to humble themselves and repent of sin and believe on Christ so they may be saved. Satan wants proud man to join him in hell.

Let us look deeper in the Bible at the horns of power. Zedekiah, a false prophet, said to the King of Israel – “And Zedekiah the son of Chenanah made him horns of iron: and he said, thus saith the Lord, with these shalt thou push the Syrians, until thou have concerned them.” – (I Kings 22:11). The two horns represented the military power of the two kings. That they should return from the battle in victory as conquerors. The horns and the crowns and the military all speak of political power. Again in (Ps.75:5-7) it is written – “Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.” Here God tells us not to be proud and desire power and glory for it is God who promotes and demotes from positions of power. That from God alone Kings receive their power. He is the origin of power and promotion and He showed this plainly with Emperor Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in (Dan.4). “That the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever will and setteth up over it the basest of men” – (Dan.4:17). (Ps.75) shows us clearly the pride of the horned serpent Satan and his coveting the power and glory of God, even to be worshipped as God. It shows his lofty looks and high- mindedness and haughtiness.

In (Dan.8) God gave Daniel a prophetic vision of a ram with two horns and a goat with one great horn and they smashed into each in other in the fury of their power. The angel Gabriel gives the interpretation to Daniel – “The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of media and Persia. And the rough goat is the King of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes in the first king” – (Dan.8:20,21). Alexander the Great is the great horn that conquered Media and Persia and become emperor of the world for a short time. The devil tempts these men to be like him and become proud and to covet political power of one nation and then to covet being ruler of the world. He gets them to lift up their horns on high like himself, the horned serpent – amen. The devil is a proud, power-mad, evil, glory-seeking fallen angel whom God will abase in the lake of fire.

When Satan tempted the Lord Jesus in (Luke 4:5-8) it is written – “And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, all this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Here again we see the horned serpent Satan tempting the Lord Jesus to lift up his horn on high and become proud and to covet the power and glory of being emperor over the world and worship Satan. Jesus knew he was a liar and a deceiver because God His Father ultimately rules over the kingdoms of men and doeth His will on earth. If it suits God’s will for Satan’s man to assume power, then God allows it, otherwise He overrules it. Jesus came the first time to be the suffering Savior of the cross, shedding His precious blood for atonement for sins. He’s coming back as emperor over the whole earth ruling and reigning forever in justice and righteousness. Emperor Jesus Christ will have many crowns upon His head, denoting all power and he will be worshipped worldwide by everyone. For this is the will of God. “And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” – (Rev.19:16). He’s coming back in power and great glory.

Just before Jesus comes back to rule the earth, the horned serpent, makes his move and succeeds in getting his two beasts into worldwide power and they must be evil men who worship Satan and covet the temporal power and glory of this world. Just before the great tribulation, Satan, that old Serpent, is cast out of heaven to the ground. He is symbolized in (Rev.12) as a great red dragon (a giant winged- serpent) having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads. His great serpentine tail drew one third of his evil angels with him who also followed his heavenly rebellion against God. It pictures Satan with seven heads and on each head a crown but four heads have one horn and three heads have two horns totaling ten horns. How plainly God’s Word shows us the proud horned serpent in all his power and glory. Satan in mighty but God is Almighty – amen.

When Satan is cast out of heaven, he has his two evil men already prepared in positions of power on earth. Satan will be worshipped through the beast. Notice the beast is like his master Satan – “And I stood upon the sand of  the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of  the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.” Yes, the proud beast is exactly like his Father the horned serpent, Satan. He too has the horns of power and glory and notice the word ‘power’ in the next verses. “And the dragon gave him his power and his seat and great authority” – (Vs.21). (He accepts what Jesus rejected from Satan). “And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast” – (vs.4). “And power was given unto him” – (Vs.5). “And power was given unto him over all kindred, and tongues, and nations” – (vs.7). The beast will be the last emperor on earth before King Jesus comes and he’s Satan’s man.

Now see the second satanic beast of the great tribulation, the religious beast who helps the first beast receive the worship of God. “And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like  a lamb, and he spake as a dragon” – (vs.11). He also has religious power over the whole earth signified by his two horns. “And he exerciseth al the power of the first beast” – (vs.12) “Miracles which had power to do in the sight of the beast” – (vs.14). “And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast” – (vs.15). This proud religious beast also has coveted the horns of power and glory in religion. He sits on the pinnacle and summit of world religion. He is called the False Prophet.

Two human beast combine together to rule the world during the great tribulation. The political superpower beast is the political emperor called ‘the Beast.’ His religious sidekick is the religious superpower beast called ‘the False Prophet.’ The political beast rules as emperor because of superior military power and the false prophet rules because his religious empire is worldwide. These are the two great satanic powers that rule over the bodies and souls of men for a short time just before Christ comes back to rule as King of Kings and High Priest over the planet earth forever.

The U.S. is the current political superpower and the Catholic Church is the religious super power today. The pope will make an alliance with the president of the U.S. (the beast) in order to rule the world as the Catholic Church has done many times in history. “He has two horns like a lamb.” The pope’s mitre literally has two horns and the Catholic encyclopedia itself calls it a ‘two-horned mitre.” There you have the horns and the crown of religious power. The U.S. “Sidewinder” missile is named after the horned rattlesnake and both the snake and the missile have infrared heat-seeking to kill its’ prey – political power – Amen. When George W. Bush was inaugurated as president, he flashed the “devil’s horns” and hand sign – the “mano cornuto” which is also used by fans of the UT Longhorns at Austin, Texas. Now he had the horns of power, the most powerful office in the world with powerful weapons.

Jesus Christ is our Horn of Salvation – “And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David” – (Luke 1:69). Horns come out of the skull and Jesus Christ is our horn of salvation on the cross of Calvary, known as the place of the skull. The altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense in the Old Testament temple had horns on the four corners pointing to Jesus Christ, the perfect supreme sacrifice on the cross and you must pray to Him in order to get saved. If you get saved by Gods’ horn of salvation, then when he becomes king of kings over the earth, he will make you a little king and priest as well. The horn of salvation becomes the horn of power – alleluia. “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” – (Rev.5:10). The horned serpent is a loser. There’s victory in Jesus. “To him will I give power over the nations” – (Rev.2:26).

Are you saved today? Repent of your sins and turn to Jesus Christ by faith for forgiveness of sin. God loves you and sent His beloved Son to die on the cross for you so you could conquer death and hell and have eternal life. Don’t reject the grace and mercy of God in His beloved Son. Don’t be proud like the serpent – humble yourself at the cross of Christ and turn away from your wicked ways and call upon the Lord Jesus to save you. First the power of God must save you from your sins. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth…” – (Rom.1:16). Don’t spurn the love and grace of God in his dear Son on the cross.
