Jesus and Health Foods

“And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” – (Mt.4:18,19).

“And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples… And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children” – (Mt.15:36,38).

“And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them” – (Lk.24:42,43).

This is the only health food sermon that I’ve ever preached or will ever preach because I preach the gospel of Christ and salvation and eternal life to sinners and that’s by far the most important thing. But I believe the Lord Jesus has given us two foods in His wisdom to help the born again saints to live longer and more healthful lives in order to serve the Lord Jesus longer on this earth. I’m not preaching this to the lost sinner, but to the born again saints of God. To live a few years longer on this earth and die and go to hell is foolishness.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity and He is omniscient. He has infinite awareness, understanding, and insight. He is possessed of universal and total and complete wisdom and knowledge. “… Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God” – (I Cor.1:24). So when Jesus is showing us in the Bible eating only two foods (Fish and honey), we had better perk up and take notice.

Today I’m preaching as a fisher of men for the Lord Jesus in a little different way than usual. May the Lord of Glory be glorified by it.

Fish is good for you to eat – it’s the most excellent food to eat along with honey. I even put a little honey on my fish when I eat fish. We eat fish because Jesus ate it and God recorded it in the Bible for our benefit. It wasn’t just to prove that Jesus had a real physical body after His resurrection (although different) but to show the benefit of knowing good healthy food. We eat it by faith because our omniscient Savior ate it and He knows all things perfectly.

I eat fish for four or five meals a week and a little honey every day. And many Christians have eaten much fish in their diets for 2000 year because Jesus gave us the supreme example. And now science is beginning to recognize the wisdom of Christ and recommending that we eat more fish in order to be healthy.

There’s no doubt that healthful eating habits contribute to a healthy body. It’s been known for decades that heart health, weight control, illness prevention and overall body functioning are all affected by what we eat. For women, there’s the added importance of eating properly when pregnant or breastfeeding, because another person is depending on her for nourishment.

Although no single food alone can make a person healthy, eating more fish is one way that we can improve our diets. Fish is an excellent source of Omega 3 fatty acids that our body can’t produce on its own. These acids are found in all fish, but especially in salmon, tuna, trout, perch, sea bass, and sardines. Numerous studies show that Omega 3 fatty acids decrease heart disease, reduce blood pressure, help prevent arthritis, help prevent abnormal heart rhythms and promote brain function.

Researchers for the American Dietetic Association found that fish aid short-term memory. The Rush Institute for Healthy Aging states that people who eat fish twice a week will be significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those who never eat fish. Fish is a good choice for people with diabetes. Fish is a good low calorie, high protein choice to assist in weight loss along with exercise.

Fish is low-fat and is a good quality protein filled with vitamins like riboflavin and carbohydrates and Vitamin D. Fish is also rich in calcium and phosphorus and a great source of minerals, such as iron, zinc, potassium, iodine and magnesium. Fish is the original ‘fast food.’ In general, the cooking time for fish is 20 minutes for every inch of thickness. For frozen unthawed fish, double the cooking time to 20 minutes for every inch. Eating fish with its Omega 3 fatty acid content can help you reap health benefits. Many doctors are giving fish oil capsules for patients who have high triglycerides which are associated with high risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Jesus said – “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning, and the end, the first and the last” – (Rev.22:13). Alpha and Omega are the first and the last letters of the Greek alphabet and are used to describe Christ. They refer to God’s sovereignty and eternal nature. Thus He controls all history and all humans of all generations. Nothing existed before Him and nothing shall exist after Him. Christ is the Word of God; every Alpha and Omega letter in the Bible is about Him. These letters make words that show us the knowledge and wisdom of God. And Christ, our Omega, certainly knows all about omega 3 fatty acids in fish – amen. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible... all things were created by him and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist” – (Col.1:16-17).

Jesus fed many thousands of people with a few fish, the best of foods. Twice He miraculously fed multitudes of 4000 and 5000 men plus also women and children, possibly exceeding 40,000 people. God in human flesh is certainly showing us the healthful qualities in fish. Honey is healthful also, but mainly it helps you by enlightening your saved spiritual eyes – (I Sam.14:27). But I have a whole sermon on honey on my site so I won’t spend time on honey (see ‘Jesus Christ: the Honey of God’s Word’). But today I’m fishing for the Lord.

Jesus called his first four apostles to follow Him and they were fisherman and He said – “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” – (Mt. 4:19). They were no longer to fish for the body, but to fish for souls. They were to preach the gospel of Christ to lost sinners so that they could conquer death and receive eternal life. The spiritual gospel food is the best and most healthful food of God – Christ is the Word of eternal life. “It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” – (Mt.4:4). The greatest fish of all, Jonah’s whale, is a type of the gospel – “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” – (Mt.12:40). So we who are saved are fishers of men, preaching the gospel of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest health food on planet earth. He offers eternal life.

In fact, a true born again Christian will not ‘diet,’ he will ‘fast’ – and I don’t mean eat fast-food. Fasting  is taking away from the flesh and spending more time in the Bible feeding the soul. You are rewarded by not only losing ugly fat, but you have a deeper and closer walk with the Lord. It has great rewards in receiving revelation from God’s Word. Daniel was given revelations as a result of his fasting and prayer and confession of sin – (Dan.9 and 10). I receive fasting helps you to concentrate on spiritual things.

Paul was in fastings often” – (2 Cor.11:27). He fasted in Damascus, when he was blinded by the Lord Jesus’ glory for three days and God sent Ananias to him so the Lord could heal him and fill him with His Holy Spirit. Moses fasted for 40 days and he received God’s Word, the ten commandments. Jesus fasted for 40 days before He won the victory over Satan’s temptations. Cornelius was fasting at the time of his vision and was saved by Peter. Paul suggested that husbands and wives might abstain from sex for awhile to give themselves to fasting and prayer – (I Cor.7:5). (Again taking away from the flesh to feed the soul). You humble and chasten your soul with fasting – (Ps.35:15) and to loose the bands of wickedness – (Is.58:6). Fasting is to be done in private and not for public show. It is done when in grief and distress and for repentance and many different and private reasons. We don’t diet like the world, we fast and seek the Lord. God not only gives us ‘feast’ days; He gives us ‘fast’ days.

The body continually desires its own way. It’s lusts cry for fulfillment and fasting is a subduing of the bodily appetites. Fasting is also a part of our soldiers armour in spiritual warfare against Satan and casting out devils – “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting” – (Mt.17:21). In the N.I.V. this important verse is taken away.

To all the saved, born again saints of God, I say this: eating fish could very well prolong your lives on earth in order to preach the gospel of Christ longer and that’s the only reason I preach this sermon. To all the unsaved people who are carnal minded, I say this: don’t be so foolish as to only care about physical food and health foods and neglect the most important, the eternal, life-giving food of God’s Word and the offer of immortality through Christ – “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” – (I Jn.5:11,12).

The carnal-minded unsaved man always desires food for the body rather than spiritual food. Hear the Israelites complaining about the spiritual food, the manna from heaven, and desiring the fish of Egypt. “And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish… But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all beside this manna, before our eyes” – (Num.11:4-6). The manna was a type of God’s word – “… and fed thee with manna … that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live” – (Du.8:3). They wanted the fish, but not God’s Word and so it is true of most people today. And so they lose out on eternal life. Most people desire the fish and despise the manna of God’s Word.

First – if you’re not saved and born again unto eternal life then you must repent of your sins. Second, you must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart by faith. Born again describes what happens to you when you’re truly saved. You become a new born again creature in Christ with sins forgiven. Receive the greatest health food in you; receive the Lord Jesus as your Savior. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Which were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” – (Jn.1:12,13). You must be born again into the family of God.

When you believe in truth and in faith you are baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ- “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body…” – (I Cor.12:13). All the water in all the baptistries in all the world can never wash away our sins which are inward. Jesus alone is the baptizer into His body. “He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost…” – (Mt.3:11).

Be saved and become a fisher of men.
