“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” – (I Pet.2).
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…” – (2 Pet.3:18).
We as parents, would certainly be alarmed if we noticed that our child was not growing. What a tragedy, if grandparents came to visit after two years and saw that their little grandchild had not grown at all. This applies to our spiritual life as well. God wants us to grow up as a Christian – from a born again babe in Christ to a strong mature Christian. “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things” – (I Cor.13:11).
This is pointing to all Christians, but especially here in these ‘tongues’ chapters in (I Cor.) it is pointing to Charismatics and Pentecostals. They don’t grow up to mature Christians and so are easy marks of Satan to deceive. Satan is going about seeking whom he may devour, but he especially likes easy prey – the children. That’s why he aims for children in the physical and the spiritual realms. Immature and baby Christians who are still on the milk of God’s word after 30 years, refusing to study the bible and grow up from milk to strong meat, need to grow up. Baby Christians are spending all their time in making money to buy three of everything but have no time or money for learning God’s Word. Children are easy prey for Satan, especially if the parents remain babes in Christ – who shall feed them the bread of life to grow spiritually?
Pastors are wet-nursing a lot of people who are 60 year old spirtual babes. We spend our time burping spiritual babes and it shouldn’t be so. Yes, we must teach the milk so that the babes may grow up but we must make certain it’s pure 100% King James whole milk, not 2% watered-down perversions of the bible. We must use the sincere King James Bible and not change one single word. Oh, you say, I can understand ‘the Living Bible’ so much better – no, you just need to get saved and grow-up – amen. I see a lot of babies get hungry for their milk bottle. I see them move their hands, mouths, and little feet, reaching out for their milk with their whole body. Man they desired it! “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.” And I would think, wouldn’t it be great for newborn Christians reaching out for the preaching to be like that – but alas, very few Christians are growing today. They have no time for God’s Word, no time to ‘grow up’ spiritually. Dear brethren, grow up in the Lord.
A born again new creature in Christ starts off feeding on the milk of God’s Word but then it starts to get a little hard. Studying the Bible is work and also costs some money – so he quits – he stops growing. Yes, it takes work and time and money and you’ll have to throw your wicked TV out, but it’s worth it – you’ll be able to think for yourself as a mature Christian, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” – (2 Tim.2:15). A newborn Christian should be weaned off the milk by the time he’s two years old in the Lord. Then he starts on stronger food until he can handle the T-Bone steaks of God’s Word.
“For everyone that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” - (Heb.5:13,14). The reason so many Christians are deceived today is because they are babes and can’t discern truth and error. The example given here is Melchizedek. They couldn’t understand it because they had not grown up. Like an unskillful swordsman, he can’t handle the Sword of the Spirit. He cannot fight the good fight of faith against the world and Satan. A babe in Christ needs to grow up and he cannot do that if he’s lazy in Bible study. The need of the hour is for baby Christians to grow up. Be a Bible workman.
“By reason of use” – strong meat mature Christians use the Bible constantly and by practice become proficient at handling their sword. They get spiritual discernment and Godly wisdom which is the ability to know good from evil, like Solomon. And we keep growing up forever.
You need to grow up at home by feeding yourself – get a spoon and fork and dig in. A glass of milk shouldn’t satisfy you after you’re two years old in the Lord. You can’t be just spoon-fed by preachers and expect to grow up. The sad fact is you won’t get much food in most churches today. You cannot grow up by being active in church. Many substitute church activity for studying God’s Word and fail to grow. You can’t grow on church entertainment. How sad is it to see pastors not feeding their flock today. But they provide entertainment instead so the church will grow in numbers and not grow up spiritually. Jesus told Peter in (Jn.21), as the Lord was feeding him bread and fish, to feed my sheep and lambs, three times. If a pastor loves the Lord, he will feed Christ’s sheep. (mature ones) and the lambs (the babes). He will preach and teach both, so both can grow – both milk and strong meat.
It is written in (I Cor.3:1-2) “And I brethren, could not speak with you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.” Just think how the Corinthian church missed out on many of Paul’s good meals. Likewise, many times I couldn’t preach strong meat because it would go over the heads of baby churches. They were not able to chew it. Grow up little flock – grow up – grow up. Pastors are to give their sheep good pasture – amen. We have far too many fat pastors and skinny sheep. We need to preach soul winning sermons but also be “apt to teach’ the flock so they can grow up. “And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding” – (Jer.3:15). That’s the kind of meals we should get in church – a plate of knowledge and understanding – amen. Now that’s good pasture from the pastor. If you’re hungry for God’s Word and you’re not being fed in church, God has raised up bible teachers on the web to help you and it’s free as it should be- but you still must work for it.
The Holy Spirit of truth will teach you all truth but you must desire the truth. God will never force you to eat. You must desire to grow. The Holy Spirit, the great teacher, cannot teach 10th grade stuff to 2nd graders. You have to grow up in the word of truth, line upon line, precept upon precept, one grade at a time. “But the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things…” – (Jn.14:26).
God’s people must not be ignorant of God’s Word and easily deceived. Paul said in (I Cor.10:1) “Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant.” (Eph.4:14,15) says – “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive: But speaking the truth in love , may grow up unto him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.” Do you see the danger of a believer not growing up – sleight, craftiness and deceit? You will be deceived by crafty men in pulpits and books who will turn you from the truth. Babes in Christ need to grow up and quit believing every different doctrine that comes along. Wolves in sheep’s clothing could not come in and lead the flock astray if the flock would grow up. The average church member doesn’t know what he believes or why he believes it. Many churches don’t have three people who can show a sinner how to be saved and lead him to Christ. “He that believeth in him shall not be confounded.” There’s no reason to be confused and confounded and driven about by different winds of doctrine. Dear lamb of God, you need to grow up.
Paul commended the
There are growing pains. You will fall down a lot until you learn to walk straight and true. But growth will come if you desire the sincere milk and meat of God’s Word. It takes time but one day you will be strong in the Lord. It is written of John the Baptist in (Luke 1:80) “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit…’ and again of the Lord Jesus in (Luke ) “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom….” We must not just grow up physically but we must grow up spiritually as well and be strong in spirit. Study the King James Bible. It’s worth more than all the riches in this world. Be a blessing to others and to your family and to generations to come. Grow up after you’re born again. It takes bible food to grow spiritually.
If you’re not born again of the Holy Spirit, repent of your sins and turn away from your wicked ways and turn by faith in your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ. Be saved by God’s amazing grace and eternal life is yours. “That whosoever beleieveth in him should not perish but have eternal life” – (Jn.3:15). And then grow up fast and be strong in the Lord. You start your Christian life by becoming a newborn babe in Christ – “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7).
Christians need to grow up.
