Governing the Tongue
“For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold, also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they tuned about with a very small helm, withersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature: and is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” – (Jam.3:2-8).
On Dec.9th, 20008, Governor Blagojevich of Illinois was arrested for trying to ‘sell’ the Illinois United States Senate seat vacated by President Obama. The police recorded him in wiretaps speaking to people interested in becoming senator or wanting someone to become Senator and bribes were spoken about it. Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s chief of staff and Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. were two of them that spoke with the Governor. The Governor and the other government people he was speaking with, didn’t ‘govern’ their tongues and got caught.
Well God ‘bugs’ all the words of everyone born in the world. God is the Supreme Lawman and He has the right to listen in on our conversations. Jesus said – “…That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned” – (Mt.12:36,37). God will hold each person accountable for everything he does including every word he says. He has recorded all of our words, both spoken and written words.
It is estimated that the average person speaks about 30,000 words a day and so we must watch our tongues. We must be concerned with the use and abuse of the tongue. I can’t hardly find a decent book in the library any longer. The books are filled with filthy and blasphemous words. We have freedom of speech and of the press and people use it for vile language. It makes them lots of money, but one day God will judge them for their words. And that goes for our words on the Internet.
The tongue is the most dangerous weapon in the world. It is more deadly than the atom bomb. It takes a baby two years to learn to talk and fifty years to learn to sometimes keep his mouth shut. God gave us two ears and one mouth so you can hear twice as much as you can say. “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak” – (Jam.1:17). People carry phones and speak much more often than in other generations, and we are sending texted words and words over the Internet in and by email and God will hold us accountable for them. We have more communications than any other generation in world history.
I have 350 written sermons on the Web and I’m always concerned by this, knowing that I will be judged by God for them and that means my spoken sermons as well that number in the thousands. But I have been called to be God’s watchman and to warn the people and I must not be silent in these end times because of cowardice. But this gives me stomach problems at times. I fear not man; but I fear God because I must give account for my words.
We are taught by God’s Word to govern our tongue so that we can govern our whole body. Sins of the tongue are more numerous than sins of any other body member. The governing of all the motions of the horse is by the little bit in his mouth and so our tongues must be bridled. Sometimes a person’s mouth can run away like a horse without a bridle.
If a person can control his speech, he can control his entire body, his whole life. The tongue lifts man far above the animal world. Man is not an inarticulate animal or a mockingbird. Man can put his thoughts into words; he can express himself; he can be understood; he can communicate on the highest level. Our tongue identifies us: it’s the index and table of contents of our lives. Our tongues give us away; they tell who we are. “…for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” – (Mt.12:34). What’s in our heart, comes out of our mouth and shows our character.
As the helm is a very small part of the ship, so is the tongue a very small part of the body. But the right governing of the helm will steer and turn the ship as the governor pleases; and a right management of the tongue is, in a great measure, the government of the whole man. Our tongue is capable of doing a great deal of good or a great deal of bad.
The tongue can be, and is in many cases, a “hell on fire.” It is compared to a little flame placed among a great deal of combustible matter. “Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth… and setteth on fire the course of nature: and it is set on fire of hell.” How many dreadful flames does it kindle? How many lusts and sins does it bring upon man? The whole body is drawn into sin and guilt by the tongue. “Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin” – (Eccl.5:6). O what inflammatory tongues men have. When people commit sin, they will try to talk others into committing the same sin. It is not happenstance that a flame of fire is drawn as a tongue of fire. The tongue causes sin to spread so that soon, with the blasphemous words of the Beast, a holocaust burns up the whole world at Armageddon. Sin is spread by tongues of fire and ends in the final holocaust – the lake of fire. “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” – (Rev.20:15).
Sin started on earth in Eden with the deadly, poisonous words of the serpent – Satan. He used deceiving and lying words to get Eve to eat of the forbidden poisonous fruit. “….the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty…” – (2 Cor.11:3). The deadliest words are those spoken by the Devil’s religious people and ministers that lead people to hell. They are false prophets that hide behind religious garments in order to deceive with their months – (2 Cor.11:4,13-15). “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” – (Mt.7:15). Again – “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you…” – (2 Pet.2:1-3). Do you see plainly how great a fire can be kindled with a few words spoken by false religious leaders as they lead many to hell? Their tongues are “hell on fire.”
Very soon will come The Antichrist and The
False Prophet and shall use great rhetoric and deceitful words that will cause
the whole, unsaved world to commit monstrous idolatry by worshipping the Beast
and his image – (Rev.13:8,15). Idolatry is a damnable heresy that is promoted
by the false prophet pope to one billion Roman Catholics and the whole world.
As soon as this abominable idolatry is committed, you have committed an
unpardonable sin and are doomed to hell for eternity – (Rev.14:9-11). Their
tongues are a
“hell on fire” – amen. “And in hell he lift up his eyes, begin in torments… And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame” – (Lk.16:23,24). Every unrepentant, unsaved unbeliever that rejected God’s so great salvation in Christ – will have their tongues set on fire of hell for eternity. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” – (Prov.18:21).
I’m reminded again of wicked Chicago, the murder capital of the U.S., and its political corruption. God burned half of wicked Chicago up on Oct.8, 1871 and I wonder if wicked Antichrist will be from there. “Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth.” All ‘matter’ is made-up of tiny atoms and now we have the atom bomb that can burn up the world. I think about the Beast and his blasphemous, inflammatory tongue that acts like a flame switch igniter that burns the earth as an oven – (Mal.4:1). I think of Enrico Fermi who gave birth to the atom bomb with his nuclear chain reaction at the University of Chicago in 1942 and his work at Los Alamos that ignited the first A-bomb called ‘Trinity’ on July 16, 1945. I think about Pres. Obama from Chicago who has his fingers on the U.S. nuclear weapons and how he’s employed at the Univ. of Chicago also. Are you watching? Yes, words matter – amen.
Only God can tame our tongue when the Lord Jesus saves us. When we’re truly saved we become a new creature in Christ, we’re born again – (2 Cor.5:17). The old man dies spiritually with Christ on the cross and we become a new man. We have a new heart and a new Holy Spirit indwelling us and a new mind and understanding. A deep and radical change takes place in our lives. And God gives us a new tongue which is symbolized on Pentecost, the birthday of the church. “And there appeared unto them cloven tongues, like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance” – (Acts 2:3,4). We speak with a new holy tongue of fire, the wicked tongue of fire is removed. We no longer curse God and sing worldly songs, but we praise God and Christ with our tongues. And we use our tongues to preach the gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. Holy tongues of fire – amen.
Are you saved and born again? If not, repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart by faith and you will receive forgiveness of sins and become a new born creature in Christ with a new holy tongue. Your tongue will be governed by the King of Kings, the Lord Jesus, whom you will willingly serve forever. When you truly believe on Christ in your heart, you will confess Him with your mouth – you will be a witness for Christ. Be saved and let Christ govern your life. “And thou Bethlehem, in the Land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel” – (Mt.2:6). We need Christ as our Governor to govern our tongue and our lives.
