Gideon’s 300 And the Flaming Sword of the Lord

“And the companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon” – (Jud.7:20).

“And take… the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” – (Eph.6:17).

“For the Word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…” – (Heb.4:12).

“And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” (Rev.19:14-16).

I’m dedicating this sermon to Bro. Don Edwards, long-time preacher and editor of ‘The Flaming Torch.’ He has helped me and many others to stand fast and strong in the Spirit, holding the flaming torch of the King James Bible in our hands, preaching Christ’s gospel of light in the midst of a sin-blackened world ripe for judgment. He has helped us to become better witnesses and lightbearers, preaching Christ who is the light of the world. He was helped us to “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet…” – (Is.58:1), knowing absolutely that the KJ Bible is God’s preserved, infallible, inerrant, inspired Word. In this day of uncertainty and seduction by Satan, when so many preachers cannot hold in their hands the infallible sword of the Lord, he has helped us to “Stand fast in the faith” holding the flaming torch of the KJ Bible high. “For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle” – (I Cor.14:8). The Lord bless you dear Bro. Edwards for your dedicated ministry.

O what the army of the Lord needs now in this end time battle against Satan, is another “Gideon’s 300,” a few good men, full of courage and not college – correctors. Men with King James Bibles, which is the sword of the Lord, in their hands. A regiment of dedicated, Spirit-filled men, willing to die if necessary for their King of King’s orders and sounding out the battle cry “The Sword of the Lord.” Men who never change one letter of God’s Word by saying “the Greek or Hebrew says this,” but say “thus saith the Lord” and “it is written.” God give us some prophet preachers in this hour of need.

Gideon’s 300 spoke with the sharp two edged sword of God’s Word, it was the sword of the Lord – Gideon Bibles, amen (at least when Gideon Bibles were K.J). Millions of Gideon Bibles have been given to soldiers and packed by them especially when they go into combat. Gideon put a Bible in their hand – amen. Gideon divided his 300 man army into three companies of 100 each. Then he gave each one a trumpet in their right hands and a pitcher with a lamp inside in their left hands. At the appointed night time, the 300 trumpets blasted the air, 300 hands raised their pitchers and smashed them to bits, 300 flaming torches pierced the darkness, and 300 courageous unarmed, elite soldiers of the Lord shouted out their battle cry – “The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon” - (Jud.7:20). And they won the battle against 135,000 enemy soldiers of Midian. “Let us put on the armour of light” – and battle against the darkness with spiritual weapons.

It was a battle fought by faith in God’s Word. Gideon’s army didn’t have any physical swords, they fought and won the battle with the sword of the Lord in their mouths, the Word of God. God’s Word said – “…Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent you” – (Jud.6:14). Gideon’s army is a type of Christ’s army. “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds).

We who are saved and born again by the Lord Jesus are a part of God’s spiritual temple, the body of Christ. As Christ has a sharp two edged sword coming out of His mouth, so we also have; it is a part of our spiritual armour. We are soldiers of the Lord Jesus and we absolutely need a sharp sword to battle the satanic forces that come against us. A soldier needs defensive weapons: a belt of truth, a breast plate of righteousness, gospel shoes, a shield of faith, and a helmet of salvation. But we especially need an offensive weapon, the sharp two-edged sword of God’s Word, the KJ Bible. A spiritual weapon, not a physical weapon, but it’s mighty through God to the pulling down of Satan’s strongholds. It takes courage to preach the truth to wicked America who want their ears tickled when they should be turning red.

The sword of the Lord is two edged – it cuts two ways. It both saves and destroys; it heals and wounds; it gives life and gives death; it makes alive and it kills. It quickens and gives born again eternal life or it gives the second death in the lake of fire. God’s Word has much grace, and it has much wrath. Woe be it to the preacher who only uses one of the edges and neglects the other edge. It’s a sword of grace and salvation in Christ, but also a flaming sword of judgment and hell. A sinner can be convicted of sin by preaching on the love and grace of God, but can be also convicted of sin by preaching on the wrath of God and hell. We must use both edges of God’s sword to be effective soldiers. First we preach of sin and make the sinner feel the weight of his sins, and then we show him Christ on the cross, the Savior of the world that washes our sins away in His precious blood. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” – (Jn.3:36) It’s a two edged sword – amen.

God’s cherubim in Eden showed us this truth. He had “a flaming sword (there’s the flaming torch of the KJ Bible again) which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” – (Gen.3:24). God’s cherubim are keeping watch on the ark in the most Holy place, looking for Christ’s blood of atonement. If the blood of Christ saves us, then we are allowed to partake of the tree of eternal life. If we’re not saved by the blood of Christ, the fiery wrath of God will throw us in hell. Yes, the sword of the Lord is a flaming torch – amen.

Preachers need to hone their Bible sword. They need to study the KJ Bible and meditate on it. They need to get sharp in the use of this precious offensive weapon. It takes work and a lot of practice to handle the sword of the Lord with skill. We need to use it in many different ways like our Lord did. Sometimes we use it very forcefully and other times very gently. Always remembering that it’s sharper than a surgeon’s scalpel; it cuts to the very core of man’s being. “…lest being present I should use sharpness…” – (2 Cor.13:10). Again – “…Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith” – (Titus 1:13). A dull Bible sword won’t do the job.

We must also see the prophetic aspect of Gideon’s 300. It points to the Tribulation and the battle of Armageddon. The seven years of oppression by the Gentile armies against Israel and Gideon conquering with the sword of the Lord by faith is a type of the seven years of the Tribulation and then the Lord Jesus returns with the army of saints (that’s us) as King of Kings, and defeats the Beast and the Gentile armies of the world at Armageddon. The sword of the Lord Jesus’ mouth conquers them all, we need no weapons at all. Perhaps, once again, we’ll sound out the battle cry, - “the sword of the Lord.”

When God called Gideon he was threshing wheat and the word ‘tribulation’ means a threshing floor.  The tribulation is God’s threshing floor (Rev.14) when God separates the wheat from the chaff. “Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire” – (Mt.3:12). Yes, the sharp two edged sword of the Lord Jesus saves some and destroys some. He came the first time preaching His gospel of salvation and He comes at Armageddon in fiery wrath to take vengeance on His enemies that rejected Him – a two- edged sword.

The Gentile army that invaded Israel during Gideon’s time, were pitched in the valley of Jezreel (Jud.6:34). This is the place of Armageddon where “the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath” smites the nations that are gathered at Armageddon to destroy Israel. They are defeated by the sword of the Lord Jesus’ mouth. Gideon’s 300 prophesies of Armageddon when all the armies of the Gentiles come up to exterminate tiny Israel and pitch in Armageddon again. But the remnant of Israel turn in faith to the Lord Jesus and He comes back with His army of saints from heaven to help them. Jesus fights the same way as Gideon’s 300: He wins the battle with the sword of His mouth. His words are the sword of the Lord. And He come with a flaming sword – “…When the Lord Jesus shall be reveled from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” – (2 Thes.1:7,8). That’s the fiery edge of wrath of the two-edged sword of the Lord – amen.

What a glorious day that will be when we return with Christ as soldiers of His army when He comes in glory and every eye shall Him, all riding on white horses and dressed in white robes of righteousness. We have the great privilege of being a part of the Almighty’s army. Nothing can stand before the power of Christ, who is the Word of God. Ten times in (Gen.1) we read – “And God said.” By the Lord’s Word the universe sprang into space, darkness fled, the earth was created and life sprung forth in a multitude of forms. When the Word was made flesh, demons, disease and death fled. Whether it is the Word going forth to create earth or redeem the earth in the days of His flesh, or to reclaim the earth in His majestic second coming, the result is always the same. Whether as Creator, Comforter, or Conqueror that mighty Word is invincible. O the mighty sword of the Lord.

Will you return with Christ in glory? Are you saved and born again? Born again describes what happens to you when you’re truly saved. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17). If that has not happened to you, repent of your sins and believe on the Lord Jesus in your heart by faith and you will become a new born again creature in Christ and have forgiveness of sins. O do not spurn the love and grace of God in His beloved Son or the wrath of God still abideth upon you. Remember God’s two-edged sword. It’s a sword of grace and eternal life in Christ, but it’s also a flaming sword of judgment and eternal death in the lake of fire.

God sent His Son to earth to solve man’s greatest problem; sin and the punishment of sin which is death – “the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – (Rom.6:23). God has set before you life and death – choose eternal life in Christ or you’ll receive eternal death in the lake of fire. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son” – (I Jn.5:11).

And when you become a born again soldier in the Lord’s army, then put the flaming King James sword of the Lord in your mouth and trumpet it out to the world. Be strong and very courageous.
