Christianity is a Relationship

“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba Father” – (Gal.4:4-6).

“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus” – (Gal.3:26).

True Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship. It’s a positional relation of sonship to the Heavenly Father by virtue of spiritual union with Christ, the only begotten Son of the Father. “For two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit” – (I Cor.6:16,17). The secret hidden from ages and revealed to born again saints of God is – “Christ in you, the hope of glory” – (Col.1:26,27). This is the mystery of sonship – we participate in the sonship of the second person of the Trinity having been spiritually joined to Him in a new spiritual birth. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7). And again – “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear: but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” – (Rom.8:14-16). This participation defines our relationship to the Father, the first person of the Trinity, as one of family. The second we are born again, we begin to live in a Father-son relationship with God.

The heart of the New Testament is the love of God the Father and His Beloved Son. God the Father is 256 times in the New Testament and the Son of God 125 times. The love of God finds supreme expression as Father of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Father of Christ in a special, unique way by incarnation. The Son of God was born of a virgin woman conceived by the Holy Spirit – “For that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” – (Mt.1:20,21,23). Jesus Christ is the God-Man, both the Son of God and the Son of man. He was born of the Holy Ghost in a human woman.

God is also the Father of born again believers by redemption by Christ and adoption into the family of God, whereby we also call God our Abba-Father – (Gal.4:6). As Christ was born of the Holy Spirit so we also are born again by the same Holy Spirit and become sons of God. The Holy Spirit moves upon us and births us into the family of God when we exercise true saving faith in God’s beloved Son.

A natural father begot us and we related to him in that special relationship, a father-son relationship. The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ adopts us born again believers into His family, and we are then privileged to address him as Abba-Father, our Daddy, a tender and meaningful relationship indeed. When we pray “Our Father which art in heaven” we do not pray to an idea, a concept, or an abstract form. Rather we speak and converse with a person, who intimately knows us and we know Him as Father and Son. This is what the gospel of Christ is all about, birthing people into the family of God.

True Christianity is not a religion. The outward religious expression which goes by the name of Christianity where people worship God and expect favors and blessings to flow from their allegiance to that God, is not true Christianity. When Christians understand their new identity, they can leave their religions and begin to live in a Father-son relationship. That’s why God destroyed the temple in Jerusalem and Christians had small fellowships in homes like a family and didn’t spend God’s tithe on buildings like the heathen religions did. Born again Christians are now the temple of God and their hearts are the most holy place where the Holy Spirit dwells – “Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands…” – (Acts 7:48).

In this new relationship all religious practice can be left behind – rituals, sacrifices and offerings, priestly vestments and trappings and duties and eternal regulations. We are children of God now and we desire to be a reflection of our Father’s nature and so we conform to the image of His Son – (Rom.8:29). Which is exactly what happened to me when I got born again, he took me out of darkness of my Roman Catholic religion and placed me in His marvelous light of the family of God. I no longer follow unsaved, religious Catholic fathers, but I follow the Heavenly Father. My Father is the greatest Daddy in the universe – My Abba-Father is the greatest dad of all.

The heart of the New Testament is a covenant of sonship in Christ by virtue of His blood shed on the cross. When the church regresses from true Father-son relationship to religion, it loses the basic truth of the New Testament. That’s why we have so many Christian religions today, because our so-called churches are filled with unsaved, unregenerated people who are not spiritually reborn and are not sons of God in Christ. These persons cannot relate to God on a spiritual level for they are spiritually dead. Religious practices are all they can understand. The Father isn’t interested in our outward religious forms, only what is happening in our hearts. Having birthed us into His family through His beloved Son, He wants us to gain and mature as sons from spiritual babes into mature Christians who can go about their Father’s business as spiritual adults.

When we’re born again into the family of God and become a Son of the Father, then He also makes us godly physical fathers in our family. We follow the Holy Spirit’s wisdom in the Bible on families and we strengthen our homes and our relationship with our wives and children and doing so strengthen our nation. When we’ve right vertically with God, then we can be right horizontally in our homes. In this sense, the very idea of family derives its name from God the Father and thus God Himself is the model for the family – “For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named” – (Eph.3:14,15). God desires born again fathers and mothers who never divorce, raising up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord – (Eph.6:4).

The idea of sonship with God is a concept running deep throughout all of scripture. Adam is the first Son of God – (Lk.3:38). Other important sons are Ishmael, Abraham and Hagar’s illegitimate son of the flesh and Isaac, Abraham and Sarah’s son of promise by God, the legitimate son. God was showing us the miracle of the virgin birth of God’s son with the miraculous birth of Isaac when his parents were past child bearing age. That we must be born again by the miracle birth of the Holy Spirit in order to become the children of God. The fleshly birth of our human father is not enough, we must be born again of our heavenly father – “Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they children: but in Isaac shall the seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted for the seed” – (Rom.9:28). Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the promised seed of the promised land, born with a miracle birth and by faith we are birthed into the family of God through Him, both Jew and Gentile.

The Moslem religion is the illegitimate son of Ishmael who have religion but no Father-Son relationship with God. And they lie when they say Ishmael was to be offered up in sacrifice on Mt. Moriah instead of Isaac. It is false religion and could spawn the Antichrist.

In addition to natural sonship, the Bible speaks of Israel as being God’s covenant son or sons. “And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy first born” – (Ex.4:22,23). And it was God the Father’s first born Son who was slain on the cross on the day of Passover in order to free us from the bondage of our sins.

Although God considered Israel as the natural children of the covenant in one sense as His sons, it was never His intention to create an ethnic lineage of sons, but rather a spiritual lineage of sons by adoption into Jesus Christ. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” – (Jn.1:12,13). Here we’re told clearly that being a child of God is not by natural descent, but by receiving Christ by faith, and being born of God. Israel has always waited (and is still waiting) for the promise to Abraham to be fulfilled via blood lineage, but that was not God’s purpose. Both Jew and Gentile, become the spiritual children of God by faith in God’s Son. “And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” – (Gal.3:29). Sonship to God is not by natural birth, it doesn’t come by being born, but by being born again. The Lord Jesus was born of God, not of the flesh and the will of man.

Adoption is a family idea, conceived in terms of love and viewing God as Father. I believe it takes more love to adopt a child than having your own. Through adoption God draws us into His family and establishes us as His desired children and we are recipients of His intimate love and generosity. Love is at the heart of the relationship. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever beliveth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16). Do not spurn God’s great love and grace to you in His beloved Son on the cross. Repent of your sins and by faith believe in Christ in your heart and you will find forgiveness of sins and become a new born again creature in Christ. Believe God’s Word because that is the living seed that produces the new birth and eternal life in you – “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever” – (I Pet.1:23). Your faith in God’s Word is the water that will germinate the Bible seed of eternal life in you. Conquer your death, both the first death of the body and the second death in the lake of fire, through faith in the Lord Jesus. Be born again into the family of God and have God the Father as your Daddy.

Christianity is a family relationship.
