Are you an Esau or a Jacob?
“Not as though the word of God hath taken no effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel. Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed” - (Rom.9:6-8).
This is a strange expression - “For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel.” In other words, not all the natural offspring of Israel, are the true Israel. God is showing us, and making a distinction between the natural, physical offspring of Israel and the spiritual offspring. Always there has always been only a remnant who have been the godly, spiritual Israel. If the “seed” were reckoned by natural birth alone, then the Ishmaelites would also be of Israel because Abraham was Ishmael’s father also. As the Arabs say today - “we also are the children of Abraham.” They are the physical offspring of Abraham, but they are not the children of promise. Only those of Isaac are the true children of Abraham. God is not the God of Abram, Ishmael, and Esau, but He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The promise was not for all the nation of Israel either, even if they are not Ishmaelite or Arabs. The promise is only for Spiritual Israel, not those who are born only of the flesh, but those who have been new born of the Spirit through Jesus Christ, who is the promised One. In the O.T, there has always been only a godly remnant that kept the commandments of God and loved the Lord. And God showed us this plainly through Esau and Jacob. Not only did Sarah receive a divine promise concerning her son Isaac, but Rebecca also received a divine promise concerning her son Jacob. Not only do we have an example of election of a son of Abraham by one woman and the rejection and election of two sons by the same woman, and they were twins. Esau and Jacob show us that there has always been a distinction between those Jews who are connected merely by natural descent and those who are the godly, spiritual, Israel – the men of faith. For they are not all of Israel, but some are of Esau.
The wisdom and election of God chose Isaac and rejected Ishmael and the wisdom and election of God chose Jacob and rejected Esau. In both instances the outworking of history has demonstrated the fareseeing wisdom of God’s choice. From Ishmael and Esau, who intermarried, have come the Arab nations and Islam, and who worship the false God Allah and not the true God of Israel. And they are bitter foes of Israel to this day. Ishmael and Esau personally manifested hostility to God’s Word, whereas Isaac and Jacob personally manifested love for the things of God and His Word.
Both of these two sons were born into the patriarchal family and both fathers wanted to see the rejected one inherit the promise. Abraham pleaded with God for Ishmael (Gen.17:18). And Isaac did his best to pass on the patriarchal blessing to Esau. God never intended that all the natural descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, should be counted as children of the promise, but only the godly, spiritual remnant would inherit God’s blessings. Esau and Jacob were probably identical twins, and looked the same in outward appearance, but were totally different inwardly in the heart. “...for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” - (I Sam.16:7). And they both lived totally different lives Godward. Isaac loved Esau but God said - “...was not Esau Jacob’s brother? Saith the Lord: yet I loved Jacob, and I hated Esau...” - (Mal.1:2,3). God knew what was in these two twin’s hearts. He knew Esau hated God’s Word and was rebellious and had no desire to serve the Lord, and Jacob did. Parents can be very blind with their children, spiritually blind. For they are not all of Israel, but ‘most’ are Esau’s offspring.
After Christ came, thousands of Jews believed on Him and got born again and so inherited God’s blessing. They were the elect of God, the spiritual Israel, the Jacob’s, the remnant, and the rest God rejected like Esau. But God’s mercy has still been upon rejected Israel during the last 2000 years of their disbursement among the Gentiles. God has always preserved a remnant of Jews spiritually by them getting saved by Christ, and He has always saved a remnant physically as well. Otherwise there would be no nation of Israel today.
We can see this clearly during WWII with Hitler trying to exterminate all the Jews, yet God saved a remnant. There was the evil Dr. Mengele in Aushwitz death camp who slaughtered thousands of Jewish twins in his hideous experiments to further his knowledge of genetics and racial purity. Surely you can see Esau and Jacob, Isaac and Rebecca’s twins. The vessels of wrath fitted for destruction by God the Master Potter went to Aushwitz rejected as the children of Esau, but a remnant were saved like the 1200 Jews saved by Oskar Shindler. But if these physically saved Jews were not spiritually saved by Christ, they end up in the final holocaust, the lake of fire, anyway - as all unsaved Gentiles will also - (Rev.20:15). Only a remnant of Gentiles are saved also. “...Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved” - (Rom.9:27). A remnant of the Jews left in Israel after the battle of Armageddon will be saved both physically and spiritually when Christ the Deliverer returns and Israel will be populated by godly Jews forever more. “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, there shall come out of Sion and Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob” - (Rom.11:26).
But both Jews and Gentiles need to be saved and born again by Jesus Christ, the perfect, sinless, Jewish Savior of the world. “There is neither Jew nor Greek.. For ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” - (Gal.3:28,29). When you are born again by the Holy Spirit you have inherited the promises of God. You have the promised Spiritual birth because you have believed in the Promised One, the Lord Jesus Christ - “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him amen...” - (2 Cor.1:20). Especially the promise of eternal life - “And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life” - (I Jn.2:25). Begin born again is the promised birth by faith. .
Like Israel, we have the same two seeds as Esau and Jacob mixed in our churches today. We have the born of the flesh religious ones, and the born of the Spirit ones, born of God’s promise. We have those baptized only by water outwardly, and we have those baptized by both water outwardly, but most importantly, are baptized by the Holy Spirit inwardly. Only the Lord Jesus can baptize you with the Holy Spirit into His body - no man can do that. “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles...” - (I Cor.12:13). As we could say - “For they are not all the Church, which are of the Church” - amen. Only a small remnant who are members of Christian churches are true born again Christians. All the true Christians will be made manifest at the soon coming rapture, for they will be the only ones translated up into heaven before the Great tribulation. And during the Tribulation a great multitude will be saved and they shall be made manifest by ‘not’ receiving the mark of the Beast, and being martyred for Christ. For they are not all of Christ, but most are of the world.
The scripture likens Ishmael, the son of the bondwoman, to be born of the flesh, and likens Isaac, the son of the freewoman, Sarah, to be born of the Spirit. “Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of Promise. But as then he that was born after flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free” - (Gal.4:28-31). When Christ saves us from the bondage of our sins, we are then unshackled and set free spiritually. We change from an Ishmael to an Isaac, as it were. “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” - (Jn.8:36). We are born of the Spirit as Isaac was, and are free born and no longer a slave to sin and Satan.
So father Abraham had two sons, one a slave and one free. And I don’t think it’s happenstance that another man named Abraham was our president during the Civil War that was fought over physical freedom and slavery. And that president Obama, half white and half black, has fancied himself another Abraham Lincoln; he has practically morphed himself into a Lincoln with a beard and stovepipe hat. I believe our nation is on the verge of losing its liberty and about ready to become an imperial dictatorship because our wickedness is putting us into bondage. We are living worse than Sodom and Gomorrah and God will give U.S. the Beast to rule over us and we will no longer be the land of the free. And persecution will break out against those who are born of the Spirit, by those born of the flesh. And the saints of God will be placed in bonds and cast into prison and death.
Are you ready for the rapture? Are you saved and become freeborn by Christ? Abraham Lincoln was called the great emancipator because he freed the slaves and was killed on Good Friday. Well Jesus Christ died on the cross to free you spiritually from the bondage of your sins: He is the Great Emancipator of planet earth. Through Christ we can escape the prison of our birth. We are born in bondage to our sin nature, but we can be born again, free born by the Lord Jesus, the Savior of the world. And when we are saved by Him from the bondage and penalty of sin, we become His witnesses to free others through the gospel of Christ. We are all born in bondage to our sin nature like Esau. We need to be born like Isaac and Jacob, by the birth promised by God - born again by the Holy Spirit.
It is written - “And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint... And Jacob said, Sell me this day the birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, swear to me this day, and he swear unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles: and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright” - (Gen.25:29-34).
The two twins represented different sets of values entirely: Esau minded earthly things and Jacob minded heavenly things. Esau wanted everything here and now. And his heart was revealed in this incident. His whole way of life was exposed for what it was, utterly destitute of eternal things. “For the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God...” - (I Cor.2:14). He was an unregenerate, ungodly, unspiritual man, a man ruled by appetite, a man who exemplified everything that the Bible means when it speaks of the flesh. In Esau was exemplified the full power of carnal appetite, as Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden.
Esau said - “I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birth right do to me?” What profit! Esau was selling his eternal soul and eternal life for a little more earthly life. Jesus said, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” - (Mk.8:35, 36). Again - “...or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright” – (Heb.12:13). Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of stew, of one morsel of meat. One morsel of meat! All of the worlds, lustful passions are cataloged in this one phrase. It was the bartering of eternal life for this present life. It was evaluating God’s promise as cheap and worthless - the priceless, eternal things were tossed aside for the things of this world. In this greatest confrontation between flesh and spirit, Esau, motivated by the flesh, lost out forever. Jacob, motivated by love for the eternal, won through. Jacob loved the spiritual meat of God’s Word, and Esau loved only the physical meat.
You need only to repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart by faith, and you will receive forgiveness of sins and become a new born again creature in Christ having eternal life. “And that repentance and remission of sins and should be preached in his name among all nations...” - (Lk.24:47). Jesus said - “... Ye must be born again” - (Jn.3:7). “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new” - (2 Cor.5:17). O do not spurn the love and grace of God in His beloved Son on the cross or the wrath of God abides upon you - (Jn.3:36). Be saved today.
Don’t remain an Esau - become an Isaac through Christ.
Don’t sell your born again birthright for the things of this world and feeding the lusts of the flesh and appetite.
