The Cup of Salvation or the Cup of God’s Wrath
“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it. For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my father’s kingdom” – (Mt.26:27-29).
“And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” – (Rev.19:15).
In the bible a watchman stood watch in a watch tower overlooking the vineyard of grapes and this bible watchman is blowing the trumpet of warning with this sermon on grapes.
Which cup – the choice in yours? You will drink from one cup or the other. The cup of salvation and eternal life in heaven or the cup of God’s wrath and the great tribulation wrath of God and eternal death in the lake of fire.
First take the cup of salvation from the Lord Jesus during this day of grace. Be saved by God’s beloved son and avail yourself of God’s grace. “I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord” – (Ps.116:13). One thousand years before Christ came the cup of salvation was prophesied. What is the Lord’s name? The Lord Jesus Christ, amen. The cup of salvation is in his hand. He’s the royal cupbearer who shed his cup of blood on the cross for sinners. (The blood dripped literally out of his hand). It’s his cup that saves – there is no salvation in any other. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” – (Acts ). But you must call upon the name of the Lord and the Lord’s name is Jesus – “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” – (Rom.10:14). Are you saved? Have you drunk from the cup of salvation. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” – (Rom.10:9). The Old Testament Lord has a human name now and you will confess the Lord Jesus as soon you’re saved.
Repent of your sins (turn away from your wicked ways) and turn by faith to the Lord Jesus in your heart and he’ll save you. Then you’ll be a partaker of the Lord’s cup and you’ll be born again. Receive the cup of salvation in the Lord Jesus’ hand.
It is written in (Ps.75:8) – “For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.” Here we see both the cup of salvation and the cup of wrath. God’s cup of wrath is without mixture – not mixed with water or soft drinks. This is undiluted wrath, not wrath mixed with mercy. (Rev.14:10) says about the beast worshippers who get the mark of the beast during the great tribulation wrath of God – “The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.”
God says about the Jews in (Is.51:22,23) “Thus sayeth thy
Lord the Lord, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people. Behold, I
have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling,
even the dregs of the cup of my fury;
thou shalt no more drink it again: but I will put it into the hand of them that
afflict thee.” God has been pressing the cup of fury to their lips because
of their rejection of Christ, but the day is coming soon when He will remove
the cup. God will take away judgment and bless them. God is not through with
the nation of
In (Jer.25:13-38) we see the great
tribulation of God poured out on all the unbelieving nations. “For thus sayeth
the Lord God of Israel unto me; take the wine
cup of this fury at my hand and cause all the nations to whom I send thee,
to drink it” - (vs.15). All the nations of the gentiles and that includes wicked
This is the time of God’s harvest of human fruit as it is written in (Rev.14:14-20). The Lord Jesus comes back not with the cup of salvation, but with the cup of wrath. He and his angels are shown with sharp sickles as they reap the earth – “And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God” – (vs.18,19).
This is shown again in (Rev.19:15) “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.” This is the final manifestation of the cup of God’s wrath upon this sinful world. At his first coming he died on the cross and offered his cup of salvation to all. But now he comes to execute judgment as is emphasized in (Is.63:2-6). “Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winevat? I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury: and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my rainment. For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. And I looked, and there was none to help: and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.” To all those that rejected his cup of salvation, they receive the cup of his wrath.
These verses in (Rev.19) and (Is.63) inspired Julia Ward Howe to write the song “Battle Hymn of the Republic” during our Civil War. But it’s not about the Civil War but about the final war of Armageddon.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on. Glory, glory hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
And notice it’s a hymn – a church song. (Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs). Not a battle song but a battle hymn and we sing this hymn is churches all over the world. It’s one of the few hymns that sings of God’s wrath instead of his mercy. Yes every eye shall see him coming in glory to trample the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of almighty God. At his first coming his enemies shed his blood, not knowing it was the cup of salvation to save the ‘whosever wills.’ But at his second coming he sheds the blood of his enemies – “The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool” – (Ps.110:1).
Did you know when you sing this song, this battle hymn, that it’s about the battle of Armageddon – and it’s coming soon.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never sound retreat.
He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat.
O be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant my feet
Our God is marching on
This battle hymn is about Him – amen. Coming back in power and great glory to put down all his enemies and to promote all his saints as kings and priests on this earth. Praise the Lord Jesus.
Which cup will you receive? The Lord’s cup of salvation or the Lord’s cup of wrath. Both are in the Lord Jesus’ hand. Repent of your sins and call upon the Lord Jesus in your heart. If you do this in truth – thou shall be saved and born again. Church membership and altar calls and sinner’s prayers won’t save you. Baptism and confirmation and good works won’t save you. Call upon the Lord Jesus with an honest and contrite heart and receive the cup of salvation. If you refuse it, the cup of God’s wrath will be your portion. “He that believeth on the son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life: but the wrath of God abideth on him” – (Jn.3:36).
The cup of salvation or the cup of God’s wrath – the choice is yours
