The Crooked Serpent

“By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hands hath formed the crooked serpent – (Job 26:1).

“In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish Leviathan the piercing serpent, even Leviathan the crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea” – (Is.27).

When God created the serpent He foreknew that he would be the symbol of Satan and God designed him accordingly. We can learn much spiritual truth about Satan our giant enemy by meditation on the serpent’s make-up. In this sermon I’m zeroing in on the ‘crooked serpent’ as he is the leader of all crooks. His form is totally crooked and he moves in a totally crooked way. Lucifer, the cherub of God, was straight and sinless until he sinned and is now symbolized by the crooked serpent. I want you to picture him as he’s wrapped crookedly around a branch of the tree of knowledge as he tempts Eve to sin. We need to stay away from the crooked serpent.

Crooked means (dishonest –like crooked elections and crooked politicians) and (not straight – like a crooked road or a crooked tie) and (a crook is a criminal) and (a shepherds’ staff – or crosier). The crooked serpent is the one who tempts each person like he did with Eve and got her to sin. He tempted her to break God’s first law and so she became a crook. All have yielded to the tempter and broken God’s laws and so all are crooks under the sentence of death. The only person Satan failed to make a crook is the Lord Jesus. He was totally without sin – He was totally and completely straight – “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot – (I Pet.1:19). He walked the perfect straight and narrow way – He was free from any crooked ways.

It is written in (Du.32:5) “They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.” And the New Testament – “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation among whom ye shine as lights in the world” – (Philip.2:15). Every nation on earth is a crooked nation, but some are more crooked than others. And when we’re saved and become children of light we now realize just how dark and crooked our nation is. They are crooked because they have not been made straight by Jesus Christ. He’s the only one who can make people ‘straight’ through the miracle of the new birth at salvation.

It is written in (Ps.125:5) “As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity…” Do you remember the nursery rhyme from your childhood?

There was a crooked man

And he walked a crooked mile

And he found a crooked sixpence

Upon a crooked stile

He bought a crooked cat

And it caught a crooked mouse

And they all lived together

In a little crooked house.

That little nursery rhyme slows us the truth of my sermon. Every nation and every generation is perverse and wicked and crooked. A crooked man walks down many a crooked mile. His business dealings are crooked. The money he earns and puts in the bank is crooked money and the money he gives to the church and charities is crooked money. He likes crooked things and likes to be with others as crooked as himself. He’s dishonest with other people. He will cheat on his wife and on the job by being a shirker. He becomes a politician and is bought off by bribes. The jails are full of crooks and the churches are filled with unsaved crooks also who have never been made straight by being saved by Christ.  Perhaps the worst crook of all is the ‘learned’ professor of Greek and Hebrew who writes up a new crooked version of the Bible so he and the publisher can make crooked money. They all follow the crooked serpent, unknowingly, and many live in ‘big’ crooked houses.

We read in (Prov.2:12-16) “To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh forward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; Whose ways are crooked and they forward in their paths”. We see here the description of the wicked evil man. His ways and paths are crooked. If you want to find out how crooked something is, all you need to do is place it along side something straight. So we see the Lord Jesus standing alongside Satan and then we can see clearly just how crooked the serpent is. The unsaved man will walk a crooked path with a great many windings and turnings as he follows the crooked serpent during his life. See the serpent’s crooked and curved movement through his life as he is hardly ever straight. Satan – the serpent is the most crooked creature created by God so that we may beware of the crooked man who is a child of the devil.

Satan possessed the serpent in the Garden of Eden and used him as a tool for sin. Now there is enmity between man and the snake more than between man and any other beast. After the serpent tempted Eve to sin, God cursed him – “Upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of they life – (Gen.3:14). God took the serpent’s legs away and now he is forced to crawl in the dust. The silent, writhing, crooked motion of the serpent forms a hieroglyphic of undulations and coils, written in the dust of the earth, written as a warning to man and his crooked ways. Because all men are crooks and sinners and all shall taste of death in the ground from where he was created. We absolutely must be saved by the Lord Jesus, the straight one, so that we crooks may be made straight. When Jesus saves us He opens our blind eyes and makes darkness light and crooked things straight. “And I will bring the blind by a way that they know not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight…” – (Is.42:16). Stay away from religious bishops with crooked shepherds staffs and crosiers and fancy vestments. They are crooked false teachers and will leave you to hell – (2 Pet.2:1-3).

Hear the scriptures of truth about man – “Their feet turn to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths. The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace” – (Is.59:7,8). Walking a life of crookedness and spurning the grace of God in His beloved Son and not getting saved will land you in the lake of fire with the crooked serpent – (Rev.20:10-15). O, be saved and God will place you on the straight path following the straight one, the Lord Jesus. A crooked homosexual can be made straight by Christ. A crook in prison can get saved and straightened out.

To show you the importance of crooked sinners being made straight God sent forth the prophet John the Baptist to prepare the way of the Lord Jesus who is the only one that can make the crooked person straight. “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway of our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed.” – (Is.40:3-5). All four gospels quote these verses as applying to John the Baptist. We see the sudden appearance of John and his rousing cry ‘repent.’ By all outward appearances, just a backwards, desert preacher. But what a man! And what a preacher! And what a message! One word summarized all that he said – repent. Prince or plowman, priest or publican, soldier or scribe, Pharisee or Sadducee, harlot or housewife, rabbi or robber, rich or poor, bond or free, Judean or Galilean, Jew or Gentile – the message was the same – ‘repent.’ His calling was to prepare the way of the Lord Jesus and the very first thing and most important thing is to repent. Let no one teach you anything else. We have scores of Baptist preachers who will not prepare sinners for salvation in Christ the proper way – they will not preach repentance – “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem – (Luke 24:47). God help us preaches to prepare the way of the Lord Jesus’ salvation scripturally and preach repentance and faith in Christ to the lost. To preach repentance and point to the Lord Jesus and say – “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world” – (Jn.1:29).

All the crooked sinners need to repent of their sins and turn to Christ for salvation. Then and only then will their crooked ways be made straight. Crooked people can be transformed and born again, and rough violent people can be tamed by repentance and remission of sins by Jesus Christ. Our business as preachers is to prepare the way of the Lord Jesus so that the crooks may be saved and straightened out by Christ. And we must do it the proper way – repent ye. This is the proper way to get the victory over the crooked serpent.

Have you been straightened out by the Lord Jesus? Have you repented of your wicked ways and turned to Christ for salvation? Are you a born again new creature in Christ and changed from a crook to a straight man? “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” – (2 Cor.5:17). In order to be changed from a crook to a straight man, you must be born again – “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:3,7). Then and only then can you – “Make straight paths for your feet” – (Heb.12:13). You absolutely must be born again.

Believe the Word of God of His gospel. This is the incorruptible seed that will germinate in you and produce a new Hoy Spirit birth. “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth, and abideth forever” – (I Pet.1:23). Repent of your sins, turn away from your wicked and crooked ways, and turn to Christ by faith in your heart and find remission and forgiveness of sins. Let Christ change you from a crooked man to a straight man so that you can walk in the straight and narrow way of God’s saints. Be like the Apostle Paul who blindly was persecuting and killing the early Christians and God blinded him on the way to Damascus and led him by the hand to a house on ‘straight’ street and there he was born again and received spiritual sight. And from then on he followed the Lord Jesus, the straight one – amen. He was one of the crooked made straight and God’s example for us.

In Christ you can defeat the crooked serpent.
