Calvary – The Place of a Skull

And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, the place of a skull” – (Mk.15:22).

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, and one on the right hand, and the other on the left” – (Luke 23:33).

Calvary is the Latin name or gentile name for the place outside of Jerusalem where the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. The Hebrew name is Golgotha. It means ‘the place of a skull’.  Perhaps the area was an outcropping of rock that resembled a skull or because the place was the Roman place of execution. The skull and crossbones is the widely recognized symbol for death and the cross of Christ at the place of a skull is the most famous and most important death of all.

The cross of Christ is the central, essential doctrine of Christianity. There on the cross is where the Lord Jesus shed His blood as the perfect, supreme sacrifice and atonement for sin. Blood is the life of our body and stands for life and death – “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul” – (Lev.17:11). “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement” – (Rom.5:11). And He must shed His blood by crucifixion – death on the wooden cross beams – nailed on the tree. Sin and death started in Eden by eating of the fruit of the forbidden tree, and sin must be atoned for on the tree cross of Christ. If you’re saved by Christ on the tree then you will eat of the tree of life and live forever.

There is an infamous secret society called ‘skull and bones’ that both President Bush‘s belong to. Somebody dresses as the Devil and another as the Pope with his foot on a skull and the initiate drinks blood out of a skull. This is a satanic counterfeit of the Lord’s Supper and His precious blood shed at Calvary, the place of the skull. Drinking blood is condemned throughout the Bible. “And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or any strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off among his people” – (Lev. 17:10 & Acts 15:29). (See also Mark 14:23-25). I’ve read about many Satanic cults that drink blood but this is the first one that drinks blood out of a skull – it’s satanic and must be watched. President Bush said he was “honored” to be initiated into this satanic society and he has appointed “bonesmen” into high government offices. One of his first social gatherings in theWhite House was a skull and bones reunion.

I think it’s significant that for at least this last century, male Jews have worn a skull cap called a yarmulke upon their heads. This is not in the Bible anywhere. They are unknowingly calling attention to the whole world of their part in the crucifixion of their Messiah, the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ at the place of a skull. It was with much skullduggery that the Jewish leaders accomplished their goal of killing Jesus Christ.

By virtue of Christ’s death at Calvary, the place of a skull, He became the head of the church – “Christ is the head of the church” – (Eph.5:23). “The head of every man is Christ” – (I Cor.11:3). “The head of all principality and power” – (Col.2:10). “For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” – (Col.2:9).

They put a crown of thorns on His skull and mocked Him as a king but He’s coming back with many crowns on His skull - (Rev.19:12). He will be the head of all power when He rules as emperor over the whole earth forever. Yes, by virtue of His death at Calvary, He became the “HEAD.”

The head is where the anointing oil was poured on the King and High Priest and Prophet. The word Christ means “Anointed One,” the Messiah and so He is. He fulfilled the high priest and prophet and sacrifice at His first coming and will be King of Kings at His second coming. – Yes, the place of a skull – amen.

Christ at Calvary“Put on an helmet of Salvation upon his head” – (Is.59:17). I trust you can see Calvary, the place of a skull, where the Savior of the world offers salvation to all that will receive Him. The first prophecy of Christ on the cross is found in (Gen.3:15) when God told Satan the serpent “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy “head”, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” The head and the heel come together at the place of a skull. The Devil managed to get Christ nailed by the heel of His hands and feet but Christ rose triumphant over death three days later and become the Head of all things.

But the most important type of Calvary in the Old Testament as far as the skull is concerned are the sacrifices. In (Ex.29:10,15,19) “And Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock. And thou shalt kill the bullock before the Lord, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And thou shalt take of the blood of the bullock and put it upon the horns of the altar..” – (Ex.29:10-12). The priest put his hands upon the horns of the bull sacrifice or ram and killed him and took the blood and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering. They placed their hands on the ‘skull’ of every sacrifice in the Old Testament pointing directly to Christ at Calvary – the place of a skull. The horns were the horns of Salvation, the power to save and to rule as a King with a crown on His head. There is power, power, wonder working power in the blood of the Lamb of God. Power to save at Calvary and give eternal life to those saved and He shall rule as King of Kings forever. As God’s watchman, I blow the rams’ horn trumpet and give warning – repent of your sins and turn from your wicked ways and turn to Christ and be saved.

The burnt sacrifice of course points to being saved from a fiery hell, saved from the wrath of God upon you because of your sins. The wrath of God falls on the sacrifice of Christ and not on you – “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shalt not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” – (Jn.3:36). Again in (Rom.1:16) “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Christ is the horn and power of salvation at the place of a skull and He’s the power of resurrection and eternal life also. “And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David” – (Luke 1:69). And that horn comes out of the skull at Calvary.

One day soon the archangel Michael will blow the ram’s horn trumpet and the dead in Christ and the living in Christ will be translated up to meet the Lord in the air – O’, yes, Christ the horn of salvation, had power to raise the dead also. Think of the millions of animals used for sacrifice and how God pointed to His beloved Son at Calvary each and every time – “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” – (Rom.11:33).

In (Gen.48:14) Jacob when he was dying blessed both the sons of Joseph by laying his hands upon their heads. The blessings of God are at Calvary, the place of a skull, when we’re saved by Christ. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” – (Eph.1:13). The laying on of hands on the head points directly to Christ on the cross at the place of a skull and it is here alone that we may receive the blessings of God.

Jesus Christ dying on the cross of Calvary, the place of a skull, is central to Bible truth and the gospel of salvation. The skull is the hardest bone in our human skeleton that protects the brain and anybody with any brains at all will be saved by Christ and receive eternal life. Can you not see God’s brain at work here and the wisdom of God at the place of a skull? – “For who hath known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ” – (I Cor.2:16) “Christ the wisdom of God” – (I Cor.1:24). Being saved by Christ is the smartest thing you can ever do.

Will you not bow your head and your skull to Him right now and be saved and born again by the Holy Spirit? O’ can you not see the marvelous love of God at Calvary and His amazing grace by sending His beloved Son down here to earth to be our Savior so we can conquer death and have eternal life? “For God so loved the world  that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16). Repent of your sins and by faith believe on Christ in your heart for remission and forgiveness of sins. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” – (2 Cor.5:21). Christ is your sacrifice of burnt offering, you don’t have to go to hell. Be saved and born again and God will write your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life – “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” – (Rev.20:14,15). If you turn down the mercy and grace of the Supreme Judge of the universe, He will righteously cast you into the lake of fire.

Do not spurn God’s amazing grace at Calvary, the place of a skull.
