Christ – Our Burnt Offering
“And he made the altar of burnt offering of Shittim wood… And he made the horns thereof on the four corners of it; the horns thereof were of the same: and he overlaid it with brass. And he made for the altar a brazen grate of network under the compass thereof beneath unto the midst thereof” – (Ez.38:1,2,4).
“And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it: it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn the fat of the peace offerings. The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out” – (Lev.6:12,14).
“By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified” – (Heb.10:10,11,12,14).
All the Old Testament sacrifices were but a shadow of good things to come – and that good thing is Jesus Christ. The Old Testament animal sacrifices were not sufficient, we needed the body of Christ. Picture a man standing in the sun with his shadow. The shadow only gives a faint image of the real body. Well the Old Testament is like that – it’s only a shadow of the body of Christ. In the New Testament the real body came and in A.D. 70 God got rid of the Old Testament shadow – no more animal sacrifices. When Christ died on the cross He said ‘It is finished,’ He had finished everything God required in payment of sin debt. The Lord Jesus Christ is now the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. He’s God’s perfect, supreme, one time sacrifice on the cross.
Through the animal sacrifices, God taught the substitutionary atonement. Those sacrifices were ordained to engrave upon their hearts the fact of sin, the blackness of sin in God’s sight, the inevitable judgment of sin and impress upon them the need of a Savior. And it is especially shown with the burnt offering.
The brazen altar displays the holiness and righteousness of God and His hatred for sin and His justice in punishing it. The burnt offering shows most clearly the judgment of God upon sin. And every time that those millions of beasts were sacrificed on the burning altar for thousands of years, it pointed to the Savior Jesus Christ who only can save us from an everlasting burning hell.
The sacrifice on the brazen altar of burnt offerings suffered the wrath of God for sinners. The sinner didn’t have to suffer the punishment of their sins in hell. Either you get saved by Jesus Christ as your sacrifice for sin, or you go to hell and suffer yourself for your sins. In Jesus Christ, we see God’s amazing grace and mercy as He pardons us for our sins of breaking His righteous laws. “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him” – (Rom.5:9). “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” – (I Thes.5:9).
The burning altar was a shadow of hell. The fire burned continually with continual burnt offerings upon it, it never went out. It pointed to the everlasting fire of hell and God’s punishment for sin. Jesus said three times in (Mk.9) “To be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched.” Again in (Mt.3:12) “ ….but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” Again in (Mt.25:41) “Depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Jesus Christ is God’s true burnt offering sacrifice. Without being saved and born again by Him, you will burn in hell forever. The altar of burnt offerings was just a shadow of that. “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” – (Rev.20:15).
In (Ex.29:18) it tells us that the burnt offering is a sweet savour, an
offering made by fire to God. (Eph.5:2) says – “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself
for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour.” The
offering of Jesus on the cross for sin gratified and pleased God. Just insert an ‘I’ in savor everywhere it’s found in the Bible. Jesus
Christ is the sweet SavIor – amen. As the burnt
offering sacrifice burned on the wood, so Christ was sacrificed on the wooden
cross. Sins started in
In (Gen.8:20,21) we see the first altar of burnt offering. It was by Noah just coming out of the ark after the flood. God’s judgment upon the world had fallen because of sin, and now Noah offers a burnt offering. And God makes the first covenant with man with the rainbow sign. The covenant was on the basis of this shed blood of the burnt sacrifice. It pointed not only to the fiery judgment of hell but also to the end of the world again by fire – (2 Pet.3,6,7). “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up” – (2 Pet.3:9,10). This is a perfect description of a nuclear holocaust.
Think of all the burnt offerings in the Bible from Noah to Christ and then Jesus said on the cross, “It is finished.” And all the Old Testament saints and animals said amen. Now sins are paid in full – the shadow became the body of Christ.
In (I Kings 18) we see Elijah, the prophet of fire, in his contest with
the false prophets on
Just picture a cross on your wall made of burnt wooden matches and it shows plainly the truth of my sermon. O do not spurn the grace and mercy of the Father giving His only begotten Son as our perfect, supreme sacrifice – “For our God is a consuming fire.” – (Heb.12:9).
In (Gen.22:1-13) we see Father Abraham willing to offer up his son Isaac as a burnt offering sacrifice. God was plainly showing us that a human sacrifice was to be the burnt sacrifice for sin. This was a type or shadow of God the Father offering up His only begotten Son on the cross as our burnt offering sacrifice to save us from hell. “Wherein he has made us accepted in the beloved” – (Eph.1:6). Only Jesus Christ has the horns and power of salvation – only His precious blood can save you from your sins.
The brass or brazen altar speaks of God’s judgment on sinners. And so we
see the fiery, brass serpent (Num.21:9) held up when God’s judgment of
poisonous fiery serpents killed many Israelites in the wilderness. And so Jesus
said – “And as Moses lifted up the
serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up: that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but
have eternal life” – (In.3:14,15). Satan, the
serpent, tempted Eve to sin and brought God’s judgment of death upon the human race.
And so we have a fiery brazen altar of burnt offerings for atonement of sins.
We have ‘brazen’ sinners refusing to
repent of sin and believe on Christ. Brazen means not only brass but someone
who is impudent and hardhearted and shameless. When God called Ezekiel to be
His watchman, God described these brazen Israelites – “For they will not hearken
unto me: for all the house of
I’m trying to show you the truth and reality of hell and the soon coming hell on earth at the end of the tribulation and the battle of Armageddon. Nobody needs to go to hell. God, through His Son, the Lord Jesus on the cross, has provided a Lamb for a burnt offering. He’s the perfect, one time, sinless sacrifice that saves us from hell and justifies us in God’s sight. O the mercy and grace of God. He’s not willing that any should perish in hell but that all should come to repentance and faith in Christ.
Are you saved and born again through Christ? You need to repent of your sin and by faith believe in Christ in your heart and you will receive forgiveness and remission of sins. When you’re truly saved you will become a born again new creature in Christ, a new man. Being born again is the result of true salvation. It describes what happens when you’re truly saved. Be crucified with Christ on the cross and raise from the dead with a new birth. You can cry out Abba-father and become a child of the greatest Daddy in the universe – God the Father. “Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:7). Receive Christ and conquer death and hell and receive eternal life. Our sinful world is headed for a fiery Armageddon, a giant altar of burnt offering. If you will not be saved by the Lamb of God, then you will suffer the wrath of the Lamb – (Rev.6:16,17). Take heed – “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” – (Jn.3:36).
Christ is the burnt offering – be saved by Him.
