The Serpent’s Belly of Death
“And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life” – (Gen.3:14).
“Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice” – (Jonah 2 :1,2).
“For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things” – (Philip.3:18,19).
This is my fourth sermon in my series entitled – ‘Light on the Serpent.’ My Lord has commanded me to shed Bible light on Satan, that old Serpent – “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” – (Ps.119:105). “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” – (Eph.1:18). In this sermon I’m going to shed light on the Serpent’s Belly in the dust and how he meets his final doom in the ‘Belly of Hell’ tormented forever and ever – (Rev.20:10).
The fist time we find belly in the Bible is in (Gen.3:14) when the Lord curses Satan for tempting Eve to sin by ‘eating’ of the forbidden tree and breaking God’s law. She then enticed Adam to sin as she had and has been the example of every sinner since – sinners seduce others to sin. Eve saw than the tree was good for food (the lust of the flesh) and that is was pleasant to the eyes (the lust of the eyes ) and that it was a tree to be desired to make one wise (the pride of life). Satan was so successful with these temptations that he has used them ever since in tempting mankind. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” (1 Jn. 2:15,16)
The serpent tempted Eve to ‘eat’ and so his punishment by God was to crawl on the earth and ‘eat’ the dust on his ‘belly’. He has been ‘bellying’ around the world with his fallen angels for 6000 yrs. now tempting people to sin. But one day, after the final battle of Gog of Magog, the last Demagog, his sin business will go ‘belly up’ and the Lord will throw him in the lake of fire – (Rev.20:10).
It is written in (Rom.16:18) “For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.” We are warned to be watchful of false Christians and seducers who cause devisions with false doctrines. Instead of serving the Lord Jesus they serve their own belly – their own carnal, sensual interests. Their pride, ambition, covetousness, lasciviousness etc. etc. are what they are really serving. They use the same means that the serpent used with Eve, they beguile with good words and fair speeches. It’s an easy thing to be Godly from the tongue outward – to be a talker and not a walker. John Bunyan called them ‘Mr. Talkative.’
(Philip.3:18-20) says – “For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame ,who mind earthly things. “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” This word ‘conversation’ doesn’t just mean the ‘talk’ of a Christian, but the ‘walk’ of a Christian – his whole manner of life. The belly in the Bible is the seat of one’s physical appetites, sensual pleasures and worldly satisfactions. Whatever thing is important to them becomes their god. They are led by their appetites. Some professing Christians have an appetite for money – they will do most anything for the almighty dollar. Some have an appetite for sex – it actually becomes their god. Some church members make sports their religion. Others have appetites for covetousness – they love ‘things’. They have the ‘I gotta’ have it syndrome.’ Drunkards and gluttons make a god of their belly and it’s the same with all sins. The serpents belly speaks of being worldly and carnally minded.
This group of people has never been born again, they are living in the indulgence of sin and lust. They worship their appetites and live to satisfy the flesh. They are interested in the things of the world. They are concerned about the world and the flesh, not about Christ and spiritual things and righteousness. They chase after the things of the flesh and neglect the things of the spirit. Their attention is directed toward pleasure and earthly gain and obtaining material things – they are carnal and worldly. They live for self and self only. “They mind earthly things.” The serpent bellying in the earth speaks of earthly minded people and death.
God is plainly showing us, with the Serpent tempting and beguiling Eve to ‘eat’ of the forbidden, unlawful tree, and then being cursed by God to crawl on his belly and ‘eat’ the dust, that carnal, earthly appetites are the enemy of Christ. Satan is the god of this world and the god of worldly people. God is showing us the belly and eating in order to teach us about sinful carnal appetites. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth” – (Col.3:1,2). What things do you love? What things do you spend your money on? Don’t be earthly minded and make your belly your God. The Serpent’s belly is indeed crawling in the earth of death.
Being earthly minded is death. That is what Satan’s belly crawling in the earth teaches us – the dust of death. Adam was made of the ground and because he ‘ate’ and sinned, he died and returned to the ground in burial. “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou ‘eat’ bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return” – (Gen.3:19).
Do you see the words ‘eat’ and ‘dust?’ Adam sinned by eating and so must labor to eat his bread and at death he goes back into the dust. Following your sinful appetites and being earthly minded is just following the serpent into death – the first death of the body and the second death in the belly of hell. (Jonah 2:1,2 and Rev.20:14). If your belly is your god then the belly of hell will be your eternal destination if you don’t get saved.
The Lord Jesus spoke of His belly in (Jn.7:38) – “He that believeth on me as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living waters. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)” PTL for the belly of Christ that was pierced on the cross and there came out water and blood. When we’re saved, the water of the Holy Spirit gives us eternal life and makes us spiritually minded. The belly of Christ is God’s grace and the remedy for the Serpent’s belly of earthly-mindedness and death. When you truly believe on Christ and receive remission of sins, then you will be born again of the Holy Spirit. God makes a new creature out of you (2 Cor.5:17) and places his Holy Spirit within you so you can live a spiritual life. It is written “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the spirit the things of the spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” – (Rom.8:1,4,5,6,9). PTL for the belly of Christ that makes us spiritually minded and gives us eternal life. How much do unsaved people talk about eating delicious food but never talk about the Bible bread and food for the soul. That’s the great difference between being spiritually minded and carnally minded. The carnal minded person has no spiritual appetite for God’s Word. He has no desire for the milk and meat of the Word of God.
If you are carnally, earthly minded, then you are following the tracks of the Serpent’s belly in the earth and making your belly your god and you’re heading down to the dust of the second death in the belly of hell. “For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. Arise for our help and redeem us for thy mercies’ sake” – (Ps.44:25,26). And God in His mercy and grace has redeemed us by His beloved Son on the cross and given us the way to conquer the dust of our death and he arose so we may also resurrect unto eternal life. It’s by the miracle of the new birth and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit “That by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” – (2 Pet.1:4). Jesus said “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7).
Repent of your sins and believe on Christ in your heart in truth and you will be born again of the Holy Spirit and no longer be earthly and carnally minded and following the serpent’s belly and your own sinful appetites. Follow after Christ and eternal life. Don’t be thrown into the belly of hell. When Christ saves you He will vomit you out of the belly of hell like Jonah because your sins are forgiven. Receive the spiritual water of life from the belly of Christ. “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Choose the belly of life from Christ and not the serpent’s belly of death.
Beware of the Serpent’s belly of death.
