Jesus Christ: the Ark of Salvation

Make thee an ark of gopher wood” – (Gen.6:14)

“By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house” – (Heb.11:27).

“And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein: and she laid it in the flags by the water’s brink.” – (Ex.2:3).

“And thou shalt make an ark of shittim wood…” – (Ex.25:10).

I’m going to preach on the three arks found in the bible and show you that God is showing us the ark of salvation in all three. I’ll be preaching on the ark of Noah, the ark of Moses, and the Ark of the Covenant and all three point to Jesus Christ, whose name means salvation and He’s the savior of the world. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” – (Acts.4:12). Jesus Christ is the Ark of Salvation.

In fact, both the ark of Noah and the ark of the covenant have many people looking for them today and spending much money and time to find them. They say this will increase our faith. If we could find Noah’s ark on Mt. Ararat or the ark of the covenant hidden in a secret tunnel beneath the temple Mt. in Jerusalem. If we could just see them and touch them, then the world would know for certain that the bible is true. Well God says faith is not seen – “Faith is the substance of things hoped for: the evidence of things not seen” (Heb.11:1). Faith is believing God’s Word. “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God” – (Rom.10). We believe in Noah’s ark and the ark of the covenant and Moses’ ark because it’s in the bible. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet.” It was Noah’s faith that had him believe God’s Word and build the ark before the flood came. It was seen by eyes of faith, not by the natural eye.

The ark was both an act of faith by Noah and an act of God’s grace. Noah was saved by God’s grace through his faith, the same way we all are today. “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” – (Gen.6:8). It’s the first time we find grace in the bible and it shows salvation by grace through faith in God’s Son. “Thy faith hath saved thee, go in peace” – (Luke 7:50). “For by grace are ye saved through faith” – (Eph.2:2).

The ark was built by Noah according to God’s directions, in which Noah and his household of eight people were saved from God’s wrath when God’s flood covered His earth. It is a clear type of the believer’s salvation in Christ. I read a book entitled Saved: the Story of the Andréa Dorea.’ It was the greatest sea rescue in history. The ship sank off the coast of Mass. in 1956. 1650 people of 1700 on board were saved. Picture the people being snatched from certain death in the sea and being saved. No wonder the book is entitled ‘Saved.’ Picture Noah’s ark with ‘Salvation in Christ’ emblazoned on the side of the ark. “And thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins”- (Mt.1:21). The ark was life and salvation to anyone that believed God’s word being preached by Noah. And Jesus Christ is the ark of salvation for sinners today who believe His gospel. He is the one and only way of escape form God’s wrath. - “How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation” – (Heb.2:3). Are you saved? Are you in the ark of safety? Have you been saved by the Lord Jesus?

Noah’s ‘house’ was saved in his house boat – it was their home for 1 ½ years. Like the Philippian jailer in (Acts 16:31) “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” Consider Noah the carpenter building his houseboat for his house to be saved. And consider the great carpenter Jesus Christ saving his house, the church, the temple of God. “But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we..” (Heb.3:6). Is your house saved? “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him” – (Rom.5:9). Noah was saved from the wrath of God and Jesus Christ is our Ark of Salvation – He saves us from the wrath of God in hell. “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” – (I Thes.5:9). Jesus is a son of Noah (according to the flesh) and He is the true Ark of Salvation and Savior of the world. He is the Vessel of Salvation.

It is written in (I Pet.3:20) “Which sometime were disobedient when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah while the ark was a-preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.” Noah preached and built his ark for 120 years while God’s longsuffering and grace waited for people to be saved. We are living in the same time frame today as Noah. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness: but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but all should come to repentance.” And again “And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation” – (2 Pet.3:9,15). But then it is written in (vs.10) “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works than are therein shall be burned up.” As it was in the days of Noah, we are living in the days of God’s longsuffering just before the world ends a second time by fire. O’ be saved today. Get in the ark..

God continues the doctrine of the ark of salvation with Moses. The Ark of Moses saved him from the wrath of Pharaoh when he was killing all the Hebrew baby boys by drowning. “And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein: and she laid it in the flags by the rivers brink” – (Ex.2:3). It’s ‘ark’ not ‘basket’ like the N.I. Version says. And Pharaohs’ daughter found him and had compassion on him and raised him as her own son. Moses, (a gentile name) was saved from drowning in the river in an ark, just like Noah. Moses name means ‘drawn out of the water’ or saved out of the water of death - like the people in Noah’s day. His parents hid him for three months by faith and by faith they made the ark to save him. Just as Noah made the ark by faith and got his family saved. – (Heb.11:23). And Moses would be the leader to lead the Israelites from bondage in Egypt to freedom in Israel. Their freedom came by the blood of the Passover lamb on the door of their house whereby their whole house was saved. Jesus said – “I am the door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” – (Jn.10:9). He was crucified on the day of Passover as the Passover lamb that taketh away the sin of the world – He’s the Passover Savior – “And when I see the blood, I will pass over you” – (Ex.12:13). God said to Cain – “And if thou doeth not well, sin lieth at the door – (Gen.4:7). All the sacrifices were killed at the door of the Tabernacle and the Passover lamb’s blood was put on the door. The gospel door of salvation is still open. Come into the ark of salvation and be saved by Christ. He is the vessel of Salvation. In particular, the precious blood that flew through his blood vessels.

And Moses who was saved in the ark, was the one who made the ark of the covenant. “And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof” – (Ex.25:10 & Duet.10:1-5). The ark was a wooden chest about four feet long and two and half feet wide. On the top was the mercy seat and two cherubims of pure gold with their four faces looking for the blood on the mercy seat - (keeping the way of the tree of life – Gen.3:24). God’s mercy and grace is through the blood of atonement of his dear Son on Calvary. Jesus Christ is our ark of salvation – we are redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” – (I Pet.1:19). “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus” – (Heb.9:19). The high priest sprinkled the blood on the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant once a year on the day of atonement – “But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God” – (Heb.9:12). The Ark of the Covenant was the most important part of the tabernacle and temple. Salvation was on the ark - on the mercy seat. Avail yourself of God’s mercy and grace and find forgiveness of sins in the blood of God’s son. “And the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” – (I Jn.1:7). Be saved by God’s Ark of Salvation – Jesus Christ.

The ark of Noah was a sea ark and the Ark of the Covenant was a land ark. You can be saved by Jesus Christ – God’s ark of salvation – anywhere on God’s earth – on land or sea. Salvation through the gospel of Christ is worldwide – get in the ark. The wooden chest with the blood, points to your chest and your hidden heart that pumps your life-giving blood throughout your body. When you’re saved the heart becomes the holy place and you are part of the temple of God. You believe in your heart, in your chest. This becomes the Ark of the Covenant, the ark of salvation, the holy temple of God on earth. “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” – (I Cor.6:19). “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him form the dead, thou shalt be saved” – (Rom.10:4). God told Noah to build an ark, not a boat or ship because God would have His ark of salvation on land as well as sea. Is your vessel saved?

Noah’s name means comfort. He sent forth a dove from the ark at the end of the flood giving them comfort of a new earth. The dove is a symbol of the Holy Ghost which is called the comforter (Jn.14:16,17). We’re born again and filled by the Holy Ghost after we’re saved by Jesus. It comforts us concerning the first death of the body and the second death in the lake of fire which we who are saved have overcome through Christ. O’ the comfort of knowing that death is swallowed up in victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have the comforter that comforts us from the day we’re saved thought eternity. Are you saved? Are you in the Jesus Ark?

As the beautiful hymn says so beautifully –

‘Saved By the Blood’

Saved by the blood of the crucified one

Now ransomed from sin and a new work begun

Sing praise to the Father and praise to the Son

Saved by the blood of the crucified one

Saved… saved… my sins are all pardoned, my guilt is all gone.

Saved… saved… I am saved by the blood of the crucified one.

How clearly the three arks in the bible shows us Jesus Christ as our Ark of Salvationour Savior. How we who are saved love Him for saving us and washing us of our sins in His precious blood. Soon Jesus is coming again and God’s wrath will be poured out once again upon all who are not in God’s ark. The great tribulation storm with thunders and lightnings will burst upon this earth ending with a fiery Armageddon. Are you in the ark of salvation? Are you saved by Jesus? Repent of your sins and call upon Jesus Christ to save you. Jesus Christ is the vessel of salvation – the precious blood vessels of Christ.
