Religious Hypocrites and Actors
“For what is the hope of the Hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?” – (Job 27:8).
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity” – (Mt.23:27,28).
A hypocrite is a person who puts on a false appearance of religion – a feigning to believe what he does not. The word ‘hypocrite’ comes from the world of theatre. In classical Greek the ‘hupokrites’ was an actor. Thus the word came to be applied to anybody who treats the world as a stage on which he plays a part. In the matter of religion, he lays aside his true identity of being an unbeliever and assumes a false one – believer. He pretends to be a Christian but he’s only a fake-believer, a make-believer – he only pretends to believe. He’s an actor who acts out the part of being a Christian and lives in the world of make-believe. He learns the Christian script and can speak the words of Christianity, even using script-ure. He freely uses ‘baptism’ and ‘saved’ and ‘born again,’ but he’s never been baptized by the Holy Spirit into the true body of Christ, he’s never been born again of the Holy Spirit and truly saved from his sins. He’s a hypocrite – masquerading as a Christian. He’s never become a Christian inwardly.
A Christian hypocrite not only acts, but he also deceives and in time he even deceives himself. He is like an actor in that he is pretending so that what the church audience (congregation) sees is not the real person but a disguise. He turns his religious practice into a piece of make-believe, a theatrical display before an audience. And of course, if he’s a church leader, he’s much more deceitful. And this Satanic hypocrisy has gotten much worse in this last century of walking, talking movies and TV, as the people have become more and more mesmerized by actors and hypnotized by the walking, talking image. Our churches are becoming more and more places of entertainment filled up with hypocrites and actors. Even having movies and TV and acting out plays right in the church – hypocrites – amen. In the play of church life, they are like the Pharisees, acting out a particular script, one entitled “How To Act Like a Christian.”
In (Mt. 23) Jesus preaches the most terrible, scorching words that He ever spoke while here on earth. He pronounces eight woes against the Jewish religious leaders, the Scribes and Pharisees. Seven times he calls them hypocrites and exposes their hypocrisy. Christ lays an eightfold judgment on those who play the role of righteous people outwardly but inwardly are full of wickedness.
The terrible truth is that without a change of heart and becoming a new creature in Christ, born again of the Holy Spirit, the hypocrite is doomed. He’s one of the surprised reprobates of (Mt.7:21-23) - “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; But he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart form me, ye that work iniquity.” Yes, hypocrisy is the one sin that Jesus really goes after.
Not only were the Jewish leaders hypocrites but Judas was a consummate hypocrite also, always acting and putting on a show, but the Lord read his heart. Judas was a false apostle and we are warned of these Christian ministers and preachers who hypocritically transform themselves into true Christians. “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works” – (2 Cor.11:13-15). They are hypocrites and actors playing a role as ministers and church leaders, deceiving and leading people astray with false doctrine. They have never been saved and born again and they don’t try to get anybody else saved and born again either. And they wear religious costumes to deceive.
In my own Independent Baptist churches, more and more preachers have become actors. They run up and down isles and slam pulpits and jump up and down behind pulpits and use their audience as props. They are entertainers and the pastors love to have them as evangelists because the people love them. But to please your audience in church means to sing and play an instrument and act out a sermon, not to be unpopular and preach on sin.
Yes, the Bible word for a religious actor is
‘hypocrite.’ And the Bible warns us to beware of them and not become like them.
“Speaking lies in hypocrisy…” – (I
Tim.4:2). Again – “… without partiality,
and without hypocrisy” – (Jam.3:17). And all this hypocritical acing in
these end times will soon end up with the two beasts, the Antichrist and the
False Prophet. They will be Satan’s masterpiece’s of
deception and hypocrisy as they act out their roles on the world stage.
Antichrist will play the role of Christ and his false Prophet will play the
role of John the Baptist preparing the way for Antichrist. I believe the

Like Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II was an actor and even when he was a cardinal he celebrated holidays with actors. He played the role of Pope in the age of TV and the world was his audience. He always played for the cameras, kissing the tarmacs of airports. He rode the popemobile and used pop music, lights, gorgeous costumes, staging – religious convocations modeled after rock concerts. Peter Jennings said of him ‘he is not only the pope, he is a rock superstar.’ Yes, and much more satanic than rock stars. The pope is a religious hypocrite, an actor putting on a false appearance of religion that Jesus preaches so strongly against. The pope loves audiences, whether it’s thousands in a stadium or a personal audience.
Both President Reagan and Pope John Paul II
were actors that prepared them for the superstar roles of being president and
pope on the world stage. Both had assassination attempts six weeks apart –
A second beast, the false prophet, lends credence to the first,
With lying signs and crafty ways – it’s hard to tell who’s worse.
His picture and his likeness is wherever you go,
And the priest, like a carnie barker, is selling the show.
They use each other for the power they crave,
In their claim that this leader has cheated the grave.
Crowds line the street for a ticker-tape parade,
Oblivious to the political charade.
The people welcome this priest and their king,
Knowing not what horror they bring.
The two beasts carefully lay out their lair,
As the world is duped by this cunning pair.
For what is the hope of these two beastly hypocrites, though they have gained the world, when God takes away their soul and cast them in hell?
Are you a true Christian inwardly? Do you have a new heart and a new Holy Spirit within you? Have you been saved and born again and become a new creature in Christ? – (2 Cor.5:17). Repent of your sins and by faith believe on the Lord Jesus in your heart and you will receive forgiveness of sins. Don’t be an unsaved church member, a fake-believer and a make-believer – don’t be a hypocrite. You can have eternal life in Christ. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” – (Jn.3:6,7).
