Two by Two

“Two are better than one: because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, for he has not another to help him up” – (Eccl.4:9,10).

“And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two…” – (Mk.6:7)

May God give us a courageous man with the King James Bible in his hand preaching the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth as a faithful and true witness for the Lord. One unafraid of the devil and the world like Ezekiel who the Lord made that strong. “Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces and thy forehead strong against their foreheads. Fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house” – (Ezk.3:8,9). And if there were two of these kind of men, they would be doubly strong. – 2x2. So that “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” – (2 Cor.13:1) Every good Christian soldier should have his buddy so they can war a good warfare against the world, the flesh, and the devil.

You can do more labor for the Lord and it’s easier when two work together. Teaming up helps in every way. Being united in the Lord’s work and united in strength. But woe to him that is alone. He lies exposed to many temptations which a godly companion would prevent and help him guard against. He gets the advantage a man has by the countenance of a friend as iron has of being sharpened by iron. “Iron sharpeneth iron: so a man sharpeneth the countenance of a friend.” (Prov.27:17). They talk about the bible together as each studies it and help each other to grow spiritually. Their bible sword gets sharper and sharper as each sharpens the other. If one friend falls into sin, the other will help to restore him with a spirit of meekness. Our enemy Satan has a much harder time to defeat us when two are united in strength going two by two.

But they must be agreed together and have the same spirit being born again of the Holy Spirit. “Can two walk together, except they be agreed” - (Amos 3:3). There cannot be good friendship and spiritual fellowship if two persons be at variance especially on important bible doctrines. We cannot walk with God or man unless we’re agreed – Amen.

That’s why the wisest of all, the Lord Jesus Christ, utilized and taught this principle in his church for our example to follow. Jesus sent his preachers out two by two. That they help the other if things go bad or one starts to lose faith. And that doesn’t mean husband and wife – it means two male preachers as Jesus taught us. In (Mt.10:15) we notice the 12 disciples not only sent out by two’s but also listed by two’s. It shows who partnered together – as Simon the Canaanite partnered with Judas. How very important this doctrine of two by two is. We have far too many preachers doing it alone and many are destroyed by Satan. It’s even scriptural to have two pastors in one church, sharing the burdens. Or a pastor and an assistant pastor or a preacher and a singer. Or two missionaries together like Paul and Titus or Paul and Barnabas. Why is this important bible truth neglected today? Two by two is the Lord’s way – a two-some.

Elijah and Elisha are the two best examples of this. Two prophets standing for the Lord together. Even the great Elijah fell from his steadfastness after his victory over the 450 false prophets of Baal. He stood alone – 450 against him – all alone. He became afraid of Jezebel and of death and lodged in a cave until the word of God came to him and asked him why. Elijah said twice “And I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away” – (I Kings 19:10,14). O God I’m all alone and God heard his heart cry and God gave him Elisha as his buddy – (vs.16-21). From then on it was two by two and Elijah never faltered again. God gave Elijah a good like-minded brother in the Lord to help him. United in the Lord’s work and united in strength and Elijah was never alone again. Elisha was chosen by God for him with the same spirit and agreed together so they could walk together. They were still walking together many years later in (2 Kings 2) when Elijah was to be raptured up. Elisha stuck with him right to the end and said three times – “I will not leave thee.”

Elijah cast his mantle upon Elisha when he passed by as Elisha was plowing with 12 yoke of oxen. And God was teaching us this important truth of two by two with this yoke of oxen. In (I Kings 19:18-21) God was teaching us about yoke fellows – a good companion. As Paul said in (Philip.4:3) “And I entreat thee also, true yoke fellow.” A yoke is a wooden bar by which two oxen are joined to work together. Elijah and Elisha were two yoke fellows going two by two doing the Lord’s work and helping each other –amen. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers” – (2 Cor.6:14:18) means not only outside the church but in the church as well. Far too many of our bible churches have a majority of unsaved unbelievers as members and God’s born again remnant must not have fellowship with them because this unequal yoke will crush their spirit. Come out from among them.

At the end of this church age comes God’s last two prophets – the two witnesses of (Rev.11). Two by two is still God’s way during the great tribulation. And how these two preachers need each other as the evil world hates them. Gods two witnesses are true witnesses and their witness agrees together. They hold the same infallible, inerrant Word of God which is the King James Bible and they will testify of Christ to the whole world. They will have the same spirit as Elijah and Elisha and will end up being raptured up together to heaven – (Rev.11:11,12). They will live together and preach together for 3 ½ years. And be martyred together and resurrect together and so must be totally agreed together. They are true yoke fellows who are so trusted by the Lord that God gives them power – “To smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will” – (Rev.11:6). God kills many people during the great tribulation but not till he sends his two witnesses as it is written – “At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death…” – (Du.17:6).

They are clothed in sackcloth of repentance and mourning like the prophets of old and they preach the second coming pure and bold. And possibly they are clothed in badger skins like the tabernacle of witness in the old testament. Sheepskins went on first and the outer covering was badger skins. They are God’s two candlesticks and when the candlestick in the tabernacle was moved it was covered with badger skins. In New Testament times, we are God’s temple and tabernacle of witness, witnessing and testifying and preaching the gospel to the world. We are God’s tabernacle of witness – amen. It sure would be perfect if God’s last witnesses wear badger skins as a badge of honor. Badger skins could very well cover God’s two candlesticks, the two witnesses of (Rev.11).

Two by two – that’s God’s way in the bible – ending with the two witnesses. These two Elijah – like prophets are united in strength for the Lord’s work, helping each other, having sweet fellowship together, preaching together, traveling together, praying together, eating together, studying the bible together, living together, dying together, and resurrecting together and ascending to heaven together. They are closer than Elijah and Elisha. Brothers in the Lord who love one another. “A friend loveth at all times – (Prov.17:17). “And there is a friend that stiketh closer than a brother” – (Prov.18:24). Unselfish love and friendship and they would give their life for each other and they love the Lord and give their lives for him.

Badger means also (to persecute or harass) used especially in a courtroom with a witness – don’t badger the witness! And God’s two witnesses are badgered by the wicked like a dachshund (badger dog) badgers the badger. How the world badgers these two witnesses and hate them for preaching the truth. And when the beast is allowed by God to kill them, they hold a satanic x-mas party and send gifts to each other and refuse to give them a decent burial. But for 3 ½ years they are under God’s witness protection program and cannot be hurt.

O, the wisdom of God when Jesus sent out his witnesses two by two. “Two are better than one: because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.” These two yoke fellows have good fellowship – amen. Next to a good wife, it’s the best fellowship we can have. Two by two – (Twogether) would be the best way to spell it. As Paul said of Titus – “Titus is my partner and fellowhelper – (2 Cor.8:23).

Are you walking with the Lord and agreed together? Are you saved and born again in Christ with the Holy Ghost witness in you? If you’re not – call upon the Lord Jesus with an honest and contrite heart believing upon him in faith and you will be saved. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” – (Acts 4:12). Be saved today and you can walk two by two with the Lord Jesus for eternity. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden. And I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” – (Matt.11:28-30). Yokefellows – Amen and Amen.
